hey guys.. new ubuntu user here.. i installed ubuntu last night as i was getting pretty pissed with vista (bugs and some driver issues)
anyways after i installed the latest ubuntu 8.04 LTS my pc was fine the desktop everything was fine.. . then i went to SYSTEM >> ADMINISTRATION >> HARDWARE DRIVERS and i installed what it told me to install.. after i installed the recommended display card driver.. and restarted the pc... my screen became pixelated and crappy.. with like some boxes in the middle and here and there... sort of like the screen became blur la.. so then i uninstalled the driver and restarted the pc.. .after that its all back to normal..
what happened?
EDIT: using NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

QUOTE(zenix @ Jul 20 2008, 04:17 PM) looks like it only effects ur wallpaper no it effects the whole screen.. i've narrowed it down to the graphics card la.. something is messed up with the card... anyone has any idea what may have caused this?.. i put my friends graphics card into my pc and everything is fine.. just my graphics card is crazy... sometimes its ok sometimes its distorted.. like now the screen is fine.. but earlier it was crazy.. with like small green boxes here and there... black boxes... black lines across the screen.. various coloured dots all over the screen... its a circus here lol

hey guys.. need some help...
I downloaded a new Nvidia driver from the net. its a .run file and when i set it to be executed as a program it will run in terminal and then say i need to be logged in as root to continue installation. I have already activated my root account and when i log out of my user account and try to log in with root and the password from the log in screen it will say you cannot log in as root from this screen...
How do i log in as root? or is there another way to install the driver without logging in as root?

yeah most prolly im having some sort of driver conflict in my system even envy doesnt fix it for me.. have to reformat la.. lol any way to completely remove any previous drivers that may have been automatically installed by the linux hardware drivers thingy??.. also... hmm i dunno what i did but in open office images are not displayed... assuming i open a .doc file with some images.. all the images will be displayed as 'graphics 1', 'graphics 2'.. .it wont display any images..... any idea why? how much better is mint compared to ubuntu? p.s. UbuntuClient.. i really like yr avatar haha This post has been edited by bluswhitehat: Jul 27 2008, 11:44 AM

QUOTE(ayob99 @ Aug 4 2008, 10:12 AM) My rig used the same gc card. I had many hair tearing moments trying to get it working. Use Envy to uninstall whatever previous drivers and then reinstall. It worked for me. Now I could set the display to the Syncmaster 2232BW to its native resolution: a glorious 1680 x 1050! I shall try that out.. but honestly ive tried so many ways to try to get the bloody driver working so many times.. sigh...
