i heard that...the Bios stuff is in my hdd...if i put a new hdd inside...still..i can boot ubuntu into it?...if not...how do i solve it?
*
BIOS should be on the motherboard.
MBR should be on the harddisk.

Is the Ubuntu on existing hdd? Or you're planning to install Ubuntu into the new hdd?

yup..i plan to install ubuntu into new hdd...

since u understand my case...will it work on my new hdd?
*
Why not.
Ubuntu CDs are all bootable.
Just set it to boot from cdrom when the system boots up.

Vmware-Ubuntu Internet Sharing Problem.

In Xp, I was using PPPoE dialer to connect Streamyx and LAN with static IP.

In Vmware, I choose DHCP and Bridge but seem like Ubuntu couldn't obtain any IP. and what is VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 and VMware Network Adapter VMnet8? do I need any configuration on both protocol?
*
VMNet0, VMNet1 and VMNet8 are virtual adapter for Windows to communicate with VMWare images.
By default, VMNet0 is for bridged mode, VMNet1 is for host only, VMNet8 is for NAT.
Unless you want to change the IP addresses, there's no need to change any configuration on these virtual adapters.

Did you try VMWare on NAT mode? It should work.

..mp-bios bug: 8254 timer not connectedto io-apic
Kernel panic - not syncing: io-apic + timer doesnt work!Boot with apic=debug and send a report. then try booting with the 'noapic' option

hi..i'm just trying to install ubuntu(latest one)
but this problem occured..need advise  cry.gif
i'm using bioastar am2 mobo with x2 proc..
*
Like it says, have you tried booting with noapic option?
Or, you can disable ioapic in your BIOS if the BIOS supports it.

If it hangs as well, we would need to look deeper.

hi kons
i cant disable ioapic in my bios
i found it but i couldnt modify it  sad.gif
*
Have you tried to boot with noapic parameter?

Hmm. Disabled in the BIOS... that's strange.
Could it be some other field is controlling that option? Like PnP O/S or something else.

Anyway, I have a question for Ubuntu.
Gee, can 64 bit Ubuntu 7.10 support > 4 GB ram?

I dumped in 8 GB ram and and after installing Ubuntu 7.10 64 bit, it shows only 3.3 GB.
Err, there's no hugemem kernel for Ubuntu/Deb based distro, I believe. (I've only used rpm based distro so far. *blush*)
Furthermore, 64 bit does not require hugemem to support > 4 GB ram.
Grrr.
BIOS did manage to detect 8 GB of memory, but Ubuntu 64 bit doesn't.

kons, not sure about the 8GBs support. But I had no problem detecting my 4GBs.

But thats 4GB. Hm. Perhaps you need a kernel with hugemem support.
*
It is a 64 bit kernel and uname -a shows x86_64 alright.
I can't find any hugemem kernel for Ubuntu 64 bit.
Care to give me the pointer for installing that?

Sorry, I'm using pure Debian. But you can try search apt for kernel image that support bigmem.
Try:
$ apt-cache search linux-image |grep bigmem
linux-headers-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.18 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-image-2.6.18-5-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.18 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.18 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-image-2.6.18-4-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.18 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-headers-2.6.23-1-686-bigmem - Header files for Linux 2.6.23 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-image-2.6-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-image-2.6.23-1-686-bigmem - Linux 2.6.23 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
linux-image-686-bigmem - Linux image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
If you can find any bigmem kernel image support from apt, then you need to compile your own kernel.
Thanks a lot for your feedback.
But I need it to run in 64 bit mode, is there a bigmem kernel for x86_64?
Hmm, I think GG is using 2.6.22 by default.
Haven't done the latest update yet, the main line and backup has gone down and we are all sharing the 2nd backup 56kbit modem connection.

The worst case to determine whether it is a Mobo problem or Ubuntu problem, I'll reformat the PC and install with the Win2003 Enterprise and see.

How much RAM can Ubuntu support?

I got 6GB and i think It only regconize 3GB?
*
I tried 8 GB with Ubuntu 7.1 64bit last month, it can detect up to 3.3 gb only.
I don't know what's wrong.

I tried RHEL with PAE and 8GB is all fine.
Strange issue indeed.

Hye guise, Imma using Ubuntu 8.04 want to ask a simple question. Um how to pause apt-get (in Terminal)? I mean I'm installing Octave (MATLAB equivalent), and now the installer have 55 minutes to go. I'm liek, want to reboot NOW. Is there any way to pause the Terminal operation and resume after reboot?

Thanks guise.

*
Just Ctrl+C it and I believe apt-get should be smart enough resume download the package again.

But I'm not sure if the files downloaded halfway would be resumed exactly from the halfway point.

This link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=47601 is referred.

I'd like to know how to create /desktop/gnome/screen/default/0/ because my Ubuntu only have until /desktop/gnome only. I don't know how to add the remaining parts. Kindly advise.

*
The directory can be created manually.

You can try to use gconf editor to create the configuration file.
