i mean install ndiswrapper if u know what i meant, its used as wrapper for drivers that isnt suppose to be for linux. i know what i'm talking about, perhaps u need to understand my statement before u starts to understand the whole picture
*
Yes I understand it correctly. And I'm sure I was talking about ndiswrapper.
Ndiswrapper tool ( userland ) will not work without ndiswrapper kernel modules !!!!
Remember "modprobe ndiswrapper" ?

CODE
$ modinfo ndiswrapper
filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.26-oshirix-wanted/misc/ndiswrapper.ko
author:         ndiswrapper team <ndiswrapper-general@lists.sourceforge.net>
description:    NDIS wrapper driver
version:        1.53
license:        GPL
vermagic:       2.6.26-oshirix-wanted SMP preempt mod_unload modversions 586
depends:        usbcore
srcversion:     876B497D6997CD8A626EA6F
parm:           utils_version:Compatible version of utils (read only: 1.9) (charp)
parm:           hangcheck_interval:The interval, in seconds, for checking if driver is hung. (default: 0) (int)
parm:           debug:debug level (int)
parm:           proc_gid:The gid of the files created in /proc (default: 0). (int)
parm:           proc_uid:The uid of the files created in /proc (default: 0). (int)
parm:           if_name:Network interface name or template (default: wlan%d) (charp)

That is why you need to compile ndiswrapper against your kernel headers.
Hey .. I'm trying to teach you something here ... not to insult you.

I don't care how big or small the picture is.
Isn't he stuck on Step 3 ? Where the kernel module suppose to be built?

QUOTE
another thing is, ndiswrapper works fine when u install it through apt-get, it's there, so y lead new user into more work when there is an easier road for them?

What road? There is no easier road when building module.
Don't confuse userland and kernel land. Yes, userland you can just apt-get.
But not with kernel land.

I should stop now before it goes to far.

this error what i got..
*
Try: apt-cache search gnome-vfs, probably the name has change or whatever.

QUOTE
his stuck at sudo ndiswrapper -m with error sudo: ndiswrapper: command not found

This only happen when compilation failed.
If you ever compile ndiswrapper from source code, you will know that once you run make install, it will install both ndiswrapper.ko (kernel module) and ndiswrapper utils (loadndisdriver ndiswrapper ndiswrapper-buginfo).
So ndiswrapper -m will not been a problem if he finish step 3.
Not all Distro's kernel comes with ndiswrapper module because it never got into main stream kernel. I doubt it wiil ever be. For sure, I know Debian stock kernel will not come with it.

so??

Atleast you should get libgnomevfs2-extra.
Probably something is missing in your apt sources.list. Please check.
Look for any error shown when you apt-get update.

You can manually search package here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/libgnomevfs2-extra

would it be possible that i change the eth0 to other like wlan0 ?

Yes you can.
If you are using udev ( which most distro use today ), edit file :
/etc/udev/rules.d/???_persistent-net.rules

**??? different on different Distro

Look for something like:
Example:

CODE
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:40:c2:10:01:ca", NAME="eth0"

And change to

CODE
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:40:c2:10:01:ca", ATTR{type}=="1", NAME="wlan0"

**{address} = Mac address of your net device

If you don't want to reboot. Just remove and reinsert you wireless modules:
ex:
rmmod zd1211rw
modprobe zd1211rw

iwconfig or ifconfig should show your new interface name.
But that's not finish yet. You need to change device name in whatever tools you use to set internet connection.

QUOTE
does this mean that the os already detected my hardware or just the driver successfully installed?

Yes successfully installed driver and hardware is detected.
If one of it not succesfull, the pci/usb id will not shown.

QUOTE
How should I know If the nvidia 3d driver is already installed or not? I didn't quite notice it, usually just click update from the tray only

The last time I used nvidia wiith proprietary driver, nvidia logo is shown when X is started.
The easiest way to check is, look at xorg.conf. If you are using "nvidia" as xorg driver, then it's using proprietary.
If it is "nv", then you are using xorg own driver.

ok thanks thats the answer.

when updating ubuntu/installing software its quite annoying to enter password coz well it just an update for the system. and do the ubuntu update server is suspicious too?

and for log in one, i thought just want to press the power-on button, wait ubuntu boot up then use it. its only me using the pc so kinda repititive to log in everytime.
*
Actually you can have a passwordless system regardless what some people outside there telling you it can't be done.
Anybody who knows how to create a livecd already knew about this ( I'm not talking about remastering here).
What you need to do is create a script to automatically start your X server and desktop, bypassing any login manager (gdm, kdm, xdm etc.).
For the password, you need to adjust your shadow file.
You still need to have superuser or root previledge to do adminisrative task.
This can be achived by using sudo or su (but without needing to enter password).
That's all I can reveal.

Different people have different perspective about security.
Some just being paranoid.

after do some googling, i found out 1 user managed to solve this by editing the menu.lst. below is his quote. can someone tell me how to get it done?

"I figured this out. You have to change menu.lst and replace "root=dev/sdax" with the UUID of the partition that Linux is installed on."
*
Boot using livecd (since you cannot boot hdd) and run this command:
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid

It will show all the partition by uuid.
Use the id in menu.lst.

If you need more details, please read my article:

Always start with "ping" when trying to troubleshoot networking problem.

1. ping ip vista client - make sure vista does not blocking icmp
If you got reply, then there is no problem

2. ping vista hostname/netbios name
If you got reply and the ip comes back, then it is fine.
If you got ip which you does not recognized, then you could be behind router and you can't use hostname for samba.
If this is the case, you might want to try samba winbind.
http://mambang.org.my/modules/news/article...eywords=winbind

3. Try list samba shares using what anetwork suggested by using both ip and hostname. This will give you some clue if your samba configuration has problem or folder shares on vista has problem.
You can check your samba configuration using : testparm

i don think so, cos i tried on Ubuntu 8.10, kubuntu 8.10 and ubuntu studio alternative 8.10..
all have the same problem, at the main option screen(where you have the choice to choose to load live CD, install or boot from HDD), the keyboard is still working, but after booting into the OS itself(installation or live CD), the keyboard is disabled
*
This might be a kernel regression..
Try pass this two kernel parameter when you are in grub:
i8042.nomux i8042.noloop

Hi, I'm new to linux and Ubuntu. Currently. I'm installing Ubuntu Server, I can't seem to connect to my existing proxy server which is running Microsoft ISA even I've key in my proxy server (http://username:password@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080/). So I can't do any update to get ubuntu-desktop, etc... Help, anyone?
*
You could run this as root (sudo):
sudo export http_proxy=http://username:password@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080
sudo export ftp_proxy=http://username:password@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080

Then run apt-get.

Or add those 2 lines to your root .bashrc ( probably Ubuntu does not has root .bashrc ), so add it to /etc/bash.bashrc)

Not sure what the problem is/are.
I will start by checking this two:
1. wrong hdparm; you can check using hdparm /dev/"hd dev"
2. could be your graphic; try set back to xorg default driver : nv
