in the wall for a 5.1 home theatre set up.

The hacking job is not that difficult, I think if you ask the wiring man, they maybe able to do the wall hacking with wiring as well. Its a very shallow hacking, then plaster with layer of cement.

The trouble is the original wiring inside the wall, They may not know where is the original wire goes. (I did see one contractor uses a Bosch wire detector which maybe able to find wire in the wall.)

Before you start hacking and stuff, consider:
1) Your budget for the renovation
2) The kind of HT you are going to install
3) The furniture that will go into this HT

You also have to figure out if your HT plans are permanent for example you'll never want to upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1. Even outside light and windows are factors in a HT.

If you're definitely sure about your plans, then find a good installer. If not, get some Taperwire or FlatWire to connect your speakers and hide the wire underneath carpets.

rough diagrame of my hall..
the hall area is about 4 feet from the tv area to the sofa.

Im planning to put my sofa there.
as for HT set

i have a 50" plasma
i have a onkyo 608
and a basic JBL 5.1
that is what i have for now.

i am planning to put all the small speakers mounted on the walls.
in the future im planning to get two decent standing speakers and put em beside my tv cabinet.

what do u guys think?

DIY job for now. It's not a big space. You can use cable tube for the rear channel cables as well as the fronts. You can use regular cables (Jalan Pasar's RM2-a-meter cable) or for that flushed look get TaperWire/FlatWire (somewhat expensive - import yourself). The rest of the components are easy.

Because of the closed-in room, you don't want to put the sub in either corner where the TV cabinet is. Put it at the corner where the two sofas meet.

if ur gonna be doing renovation & hacking works, the electrical guy can do it for u...

do u hv plaster ceiling? if yes, the speaker cable from AVR to rear speakers can travel above the plaster ceiling then u only have minimum hacking works.

and since u have a tv panel, its easy to hide those cable behind the panel, means minimal or no hacking works required.

so only from ceiling to rear speakers u need hacking.

that's what i did for my place.

Yah same here, I just got the wireman to pull the cables for the surround speakers. Make sure he puts them in conduit in case you wanna change the cable later.

You may also wanna consider where the sub is gonna be and make sure there is a power point there and also run the cable for that. That would require more hacking though as it's gonna be floor level.

Hi,

I would suggest you to spend a little bit of dough by putting timber-strip. Cable can be laid underneath. No hacking and nice.

Just suggestion.
