Breastfeeding should be encouraged among mothers in Malaysia.
Benefits: - Low Cost - Found to be nutritionally superior than baby-formulas. - Due to the anti-infective properties of breastmilk, breastfed babies tend to have less incidence of or less pronounced symptoms of ear infections, respiratory illness, allergies, diarrhea, and vomiting. - SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is less common in breastfed babies. - Breastmilk is constantly changing in its composition to meet the changing needs of the baby. It has the exact combination of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and sugars needed for the human infant at various stages of his growth. - Breastfed children are at less risk for chrohn's disease and juvenile diabetes. - Children who were breastfed are less likely to need orthodontic work such as braces due to the unique sucking action required with breastfeeding. - They also seem to have better overall dental health than formula-fed children. Children who were breastfed need speech therapy less often than those who were bottle-fed. - The bond between mother and child seems to be enhanced with breastfeeding. - Breast-fed babies are less likely to be overfed. - Generally costs less than the commercial infant formulas. - Breastmilk is always available, clean, and the right temperature. - Osteoporosis and cervical cancer are less common in women who breastfed. - The return of fertility is delayed with breastfeeding. - Long chain omega-3 fatty acids-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for synthesis of brain tissues, CNS, eyes. - Reduces risk of food allergies - Establishes eating in moderation - Decreases ear infections - High linoleic acid and cholesterol content for brain development - Easy to digest proteins and protein binds to iron reducing bacteria growth - Contains antibodies, immune-system cells and Lactobacillus bifidus factor

I think I'll turn this thread into a breastfeeding support group. My bub is fully-breastfed (not a drop of formula in her body) but it didnt come easy. Will work on this soon. Thanks b3ta

how old is your daughter? also, it would be good to start introducing semi-solid food into the diet at around 5-6 months to accompany breast fed milk

My 1st daughter, wasn't jaundiced at all. Breastfed her about 1 month plus, cos after right having her, I did my degree. 2nd baby, a little jaundiced, but nothing worrying. Managed to breastfed for 4+ months. Diet, I think nothing special. I just had the usual nasi + tasteless confinement lauk for first few weeks, then normal stuff for the rest of the confinement period. I don't really pantang la, so dunno la because of diet or what..

There's actually a link between ginger overdose and jaundice. My baby was breastfed within 30 mins after birth and every 2 hours thereafter (imagine how tired I was after giving birth ). No jaundice I think more Chinese moms prefer formula than Malay moms, hence could be a contributing factor too. Pile in all the ginger and herbs...

With all the chemicals ladies put onto themselves (from skin care to bathing lotions to makeup to perfumes etc), do you think its still safe to breast feed?

Of course when you are breastfeeding, you need to make sure that at least your breasts are free from these products.

Getting Started

Today it's my 3rd day bf. Fingers cross milk would start coming in cuz baby seems not very satisfied after feeds. She would nurse and nurse for few hours. When we put her back on the cot, she would fuss and cry so I have no choice but to let her sleep on my chest.
