i read this thread with interest. i have a few ques, hope can get some insights from you. i am actually freethinker. not much exposure to this area. my question is really sincere, and not intend for anything bad:
1. during Cheng Meng, people burn gifts, gold papers, houses etc. my ques is, is the dead really receiving it, or it is more of a cultural thing? if its real, then those from other race who don't practice this, their dead relative must be in poverty. i am not againts this and will still burn gifts, out of routine for chengbeng, but there is nothing more (in terms of appreciating the meaning behind, or believing the dead actually receives it).
2. my father just passed away recently. is there anyway to know if he did went to a better place? i havnt have any dream about him since he passed on. no message that he left since he went away. he's been very unlucky this life, suffered when he's a child and sick for most his adult life. just not willing to see him continue suffer.
he has no message probably because he has said everything he needed to say, see the people he needed to see, as he did not go off suddenly. simply put, doctor has said he cannot make it. but he did make it, and 'earned' extra 3 months before he really passed on, rather peacefully and painlessly.
3. Any rule to observe for first cheng beng? heard it should be earlier than ChengBeng date. we are going to early ChengBeng on next monday, coincide with his 7th week ritual, and erection of tombstone. we do the 3 things together. not sure if it is alright.
4. this is totally unrelated. from reading this thread, only i realized that the reason people call 'third party' fox deity. but you did mentioned that the ninetail fox is a good deity. the wikipedia say it differently:

1.When everytime before we start burning those paper house, car or each other to the ancestor, we first need to paste along together with a paper like a scripture functions as a stamp to be written down the ancestor name, date of the death and also from whom as address to be delivered to them... The important point to be noted that its not the current Western calendar date but is Chinese Lunar calendar.. Those ghost officer doesnt understand what is January, February or March.. It's have their own year, month and date like the green words which as in the picture attached. It also could be easily found in Western Calendar.. The date its only written on the day you want to burn.. Example today is 初一 and you want to burn the paper on 初三 hence the scripture there need to write 初三 as the exactly date.. If not write the exactly date and burn it, its considered lost and cant received by the ancestor... Remember not to put your name on it cause once you put your full name, those wondering spirit may seek something from you to burn to them.. Let said if u wish to burn to Father who was deceased and you were ranking the youngest son in the family then u need to write "From : 小仔" then Ancestor will know it..
2. A human who just passed away its considered new ghost just like a new born babies.. So many things their need to learn from the beginning lead by the Ancestor in the Ghost World thats why those soul in hell were chained.. Their need some times to learn how to float, how to balancing themself because their dont have body part like human being.. Bought a dreams or bringing message to their descendants also need a lot of time to practice or summon and also need to depends the frequency to communicate with descendants is matched only successful communicate with them thru dreaming..
3.Its a culture since old generations n tradition for the early ching ming for those deceased recently but now modern day, people choose early before the actual day is just because to skip those traffic jam, the crowded during the ching ming season...
4. Human also got into different between Evil Mind Or Wise.. Its same with a fox.. It were told that Nine Tails Fox also were transform from Fox spirit but its because for a very long year had pass with all the good deed she had done for human, hence it granted with the Nine Tails Fox Fairies.. The place where Fox Fairies were granted took in Dragon Tiger Mount " 龙虎山" in China where the place of Master Tai Shang Lao Jun meditate also.. When fox spirit before grant as fairies, she met tai shang lao jun on the half way of meditation and she ask for mercy and hope master tai shang lao jun would give her a chance to meditate and help human kind in the future and finally Master Tai agree and let her meditate and hope she will be granted as a fox fairies someday.. The legends continues in meditation and within 500 years, her intelligence increase by growing her tail and within 500 years again, her tails grow again until totally form up 9 of tails.. Thats how the legendary Nine Fox Fairies were exist...
