Preparations for the Reds' Champions League Group C fixture against Bursaspor continued on Tuesday morning, with 24 United players, including striker Wayne Rooney, taking part in a training session at Carrington.

ManUtd.com, alongside a host of national and international media, were invited to the club's training ground to watch the first 15 minutes. The 21 outfield players split into two groups for some possession work (a game known at United as "boxes") before first-team fitness coach Tony Strudwick led an energetic warm-up and stretching session.

Ryan Giggs and Bebe are both nursing minor injuries at the moment so did not take part, while Jonny Evans was also absent. It's believed Evans may also be carrying a knock.

Sir Alex and John O'Shea will field questions at a UEFA press conference held at Old Trafford at 14:00BST on Tuesday, ahead of Turkish champions Bursaspor's visit on Wednesday night (kick-off: 19:45 BST).

Wayne Rooney will miss United’s match against Bursaspor on Wednesday night after being stretchered off in training with an ankle injury on Tuesday morning.

The full extent of the injury is not yet known but Rooney will join Ryan Giggs (hamstring), Jonny Evans (hip) and Michael owen (hamstring) on the sidelines for the Turkish team’s visit. At a press conference held at Old Trafford on Tuesday afternoon, Sir Alex told journalists: “Jonny got a hip injury in training over the last week. He’s out.

“Michael [Owen] started training this week. He won’t be involved on Wednesday – I think it’s only fair to him that he should have 10 days’ training before he goes back into competitive games.”

The boss confirmed those absences would mean opportunities for some of the younger players at the club.

“There’ll be some changes tomorrow,” he said. “That’s not to say we’re taking Bursaspor lightly, though. We hope the changes we make are ones that are easy to carry, in terms of positions where we feel we can cope.”

I know i'm not supposed to be here...but if i'm not mistaken by next summer rooney can buy his last year of contract with just 5mil...if SAF want him out...it will be this january..so that his price is still at acceptable value...

Wayne Rooney could put pressure on Manchester United to sell him by invoking Article 17 of Fifa’s transfer laws and unilaterally quitting his contract next summer.

The so-called ‘Webster ruling’ allowed Scotland’s Andy Webster to quit Hearts for Wigan in 2006, a decision ratified by the Court for Arbitration in Sport. In return he only had to pay Hearts a sum related to the amount of wages left on his contract, or around £150,000.

Rooney is reportedly desperate to leave United.

The last contract deal he did was in November 2006, to keep him at United until 2012.

The “protected period” of that contract under Fifa laws (three years) has already expired, which means Rooney can walk next summer for one year’s wages, or around £4.5m, equivalent to something like a 10th of his market value. Sort of.

This being a relatively new area of football law and tested only a few times so far, it gets much more complex than that.

The ‘Webster ruling’ was followed by the Matuzalem ruling, further ratified by the case of Essam El Hadary, and then muddied by the Morgan De Sanctis case, more of which here.

Which all means Rooney might actually have to pay £10m, or £5m, or another figure. But certainly much less than he’s “worth”. (If he went down this route). He could merely suggest he’s thinking about it to increase his chances of a move.

But the bottom line is Rooney could walk away at a cut price next summer, giving him huge leverage in his attempts to leave – if indeed he still wants to.
