Fergie issues Nani challenge

QUOTE
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Nani to maintain the level of his recent performances in order to continue to fill the void left by the injured Antonio Valencia.

Winger Nani was the star for his country on Friday night as he scored twice in Portugal's 3-1 win over Denmark when carrying his club form to international level.

Ferguson has been impressed and wants the 23-year-old to continue to shine as United attempt to compensate for the loss of Valencia, who broke his leg in the UEFA Champions League against Rangers in September.

The Untied boss told the Manchester Evening News: "It's a loss to lose any player but Antonio was probably the most improved squad member over the last 12 months, so it was a big blow.

"The development we saw from when he signed for us to the present day has been amazing. We thought it would take a couple of years for him to reach this level, but he took to the challenge like a duck to water.

"However, we've got a strong squad and we'll cope. It's up to Nani now to play his part, and he has done superbly this season, so he'll offer us width.

"Then there's also Gabriel Obertan and the boy Bebe, who's training very well. We're not too bad - we've got options."

Berba's beautiful game

QUOTE
We spoke to Dimitar Berbatov just after his Liverpool hat-trick to relive his best day in Red, and find out just what makes him tick…

Dimitar, how does it feel to have written your own bit of Manchester United history?
I didn’t know before the Liverpool game that it was such a long time since any United player had scored a hat-trick against them. But afterwards I found out that no-one had done it for 64 years so I felt proud. It was a magical day for me. It’s not every day you score three goals against a team like Liverpool. But the most important thing was that we won. If the game had finished 2-2, even if I had scored two goals, it wouldn’t be pleasant. It was a great game and I hope everyone was entertained.

Everyone’s still talking about your amazing overhead kick. How was it from your point of view?
I was just in the box and I saw Nani’s cross coming. Wayne Rooney was in front of me and he was going for the ball so I was screaming for him to leave it. I think he heard me – afterwards in the dresing room he said he did and that’s why he left the ball at the last minute. I saw the ball drop and there was no other way to control it except with my thigh and I just tried to do something different. In a situation like this, you don’t have so much time to think. The first thing that came into my mind was to take it on the thigh and try to hit it like this [mimes an overhead kick]. Even when I did it, I didn’t know the ball was in. I was on the ground, turning around, and then I heard the crowd screaming. After that I knew something special had happened.

We enjoyed the third goal at Liverpool, not just because it won the game, but because it was more a classic centre-forward’s type of goal. How important is that physical presence in your game?
I don’t consider myself a classical centre-forward. I try to bring something different to the game. I depend more on my touch and my technical ability than to jump and play with my elbows. Obviously there are moments when you have to decide to rely on your technique, or to be more physical to try to score the goal. The third goal against Liverpool was also beautiful for me – it was a cross and you have just a second to think about what the defender is going to do and how you are going to outsmart him. I jumped just a second before [Jamie Carragher] to get ahead of him and that was it. You just need to be quick. It’s a simple thing. From the outside, it might look difficult, but it’s not so difficult.

Do you find it frustrating that you – and other strikers – are judged solely on goals, when you bring much more to the game?
You cannot be angry. Everybody thinks they understand football. People all around the world think they are experts. But for me a good player, a complete player, is not just about scoring goals. It’s about vision, about touch, about decision-making. I know lots of strikers who score many goals, but they don’t have the technical ability I like to see in players. I always like a player who can control the ball, who thinks two steps ahead – players like Zidane or Xavi. Or like Leo Messi, who is not a typical centre-forward. He is more of a midfield player who scores a lot of goals. For strikers, you are right, people judge on the number of goals, but for me there is more to it than that.

So do you feel it is as important to entertain as it is to score goals?
Yes. That’s my aim. You need to know when to slow it down, when to increase the tempo. Zidane was great at doing that. He knew what he could do with his touch and when a player is really sure in himself he can do great things. I know what I can do and I try to do it. I try on the training  ground and when you see the goals a player scores in games, in some ways, he’s already scored that goal in training. You try to transfer skills from the training ground to the game.

Because you make football look quite easy, some people assume that you don’t work hard. But those skills take practise, don’t they?
Yes, of course. But it starts when you are just a boy. I remember when I was small I would kick the ball up high, maybe a thousand times a day just to try to stop it with my feet. I think because I did that, now I have good technique. So I knew how to control the ball and where to look, but when you become a professional player you continue to develop your skills. You need to practise and the only place to do it is the training ground. Or at home if you have a big house [laughs]. On the other hand, though, you have games where sometimes you think for a second, “What if I do that?”. You’ve never tried it before but you just try. Like the second [against Liverpool], I thought, “Well, you never know”. I already felt in that game that if I shot from the halfway line I was going to score. Honestly, you get some games like this where you feel everything is working for you and you feel powerful.

That level of confidence must be great. But what about when you’re not in such good form?
You need to stay strong. You need to believe in yourself and know what you can do. There will be periods where you don’t feel so great, but you have your team-mates and you have your manager who are always behind you.

The bond with your team-mates looks very strong, if the celebrations of your goals against Liverpool are anything to go by. Do you feel at home at United?
I do feel at home. And I know what you mean about the celebrations. I was watching the highlights and I saw that they were happy for me as well as for the goal, so that made me feel great. It shows that my team-mates have accepted me as part of the team. Sometimes you see a striker who scores goals and nobody goes to celebrate with them, but that really made me smile at home when I watched the game.

Would you ever consider moving back into midfield? You have the ball skills for it...
I keep trying to play in defence in training! But they all scream at me, “Go forward, go forward”. But I enjoy it. You never know. Many people start as strikers and then move to the midfield. My father was a striker and then he moved back to the defence. Maybe I’ll enjoy playing in the midfield when I’m 37 [mimes doddering about with a walking stick].

You’re a father yourself now – how has that changed your outlook on life?
Can you believe it? We have two kids in the house now – me and my daughter [one-year-old Dea]. I’m still learning. Sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing but at least I try. I’m having a great time. The crying’s a bit irritating sometimes, but we’ve all been there. I’ve got no complaints. As long as we all stay healthy as a family, I’m happy.

You do a lot of charity work for kids back in Bulgaria. How did you get involved in that?
I set up a foundation in my name and we work exclusively in Bulgaria. Here you have lots of famous faces, so you don’t need me. But Bulgaria is a small country and I try to use my name and whatever I can do to help. Especially for gifted kids – kids with special talents – because we have a lot of foundations for, say, sick kids, but I try to focus on those with talents, because in our country nobody is trying to help them succeed. I know how many people helped me to get where I am. It doesn’t matter if it’s sports or physics or acting, I try to help them.

Looking forward, what targets have you set yourself for the rest of the season?
My first target is to stay clear of injury. I think that’s the first target for everybody. So I work hard on our injury-prevention sessions with the coaches. And then you think about what you want to do in the season. Obviously, you‚d like to win everything, but it’s not easy, so you think about how you can help the team – score goals, make assists, as much as possible.

Finally, we all love your skills on the football pitch, but tell us something you’re rubbish at...
[laughs] Ha! Tennis! And golf! Everybody seems to love golf around here, but me? I stay away. I can’t hit the ball. I’m terrible!

Stekelenburg eyes United move

QUOTE
Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has not ruled out a move to Manchester United as he considers departing Ajax next summer.

The Netherlands international, who is out of contract with the Dutch giants in 2012, is expected to leave Amsterdam at the end of the season.

Ajax coach Martin Jol has linked Stekelenburg with a switch to Old Trafford, and while the 28-year-old has not heard anything from the Premier League club, he admits he would be interested in a potential move.

Interest

"That is a club where everyone wants to play," Stekelenburg told Dutch sports magazine NuSport. "If Jol said he is aware of the interest, I will take notice.

"(However) my agent and I haven't heard anything yet."

Whatever happens next year, Stekelenburg insists he will not be extending his contract at Ajax when it expires.

"No it won't happen," he added. "If you look at my contract it has only one year left after this season.

"Ajax wants money for me and I have no problem with that. Financially, it would be the most interesting to sell me this summer.

"However only I will decide about my future. I want to go to a top league and not to a relegation candidate.

"Otherwise I prefer to stay for one year longer at Ajax. I don't have to leave (next summer)."

The shot-stopper has ruled out making a move in the January transfer window, insisting he still has work to do in Amsterdam.

Battle

"I won't leave this winter break," he said. "Kenneth (Vermeer) won't be fit at that time and I don't prefer a move at that time.

"I started this season at Ajax to battle for the title and the Champions League adventure and I want to be there until the end.

"I believe in this squad. We can do a lot of beautiful things."

Keeper confirms United interest

QUOTE
Aalesunds shot-stopper Anders Lindegaard has confirmed that Manchester United are one of the clubs chasing his signature.

The 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over recent months, with the Red Devils known to be weighing up their goalkeeping options.

It has been reported that Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Lindegaard as a possible new recruit and has had his goalkeeping coach Eric Steele watch him in action.

The scouting missions have seen positive reviews sent back to Old Trafford, and an offer is believed to be imminent.

Accurate

Lindegaard's current employers are already bracing themselves for bids in January, aware that they stand little chance of retaining the services of their number one.

The man himself has now spoken out about his future, and has revealed that United are among those monitoring his situation.

He said: "There are a lot of rumours in the press about the clubs interested in me, but some of them are actually quite accurate. And yes, it is Manchester United.

"I know there is interest from United, it is not just coming from the press."

Manchester United star Ji-Sung Park ruled out of South Korea clash with knee pain

QUOTE
Manchester United's winger worries have taken another turn for the worse after Ji-Sung Park complained of knee pain on South Korea duty.

Park, 29, was called up for Tueday's clash against Japan and trained on Sunday. Immediately after the session he complained about the condition and is now set to miss the friendly in Seoul.

National team coach Cho Gwang-Rae stated to reporters: "Park said he feels pain in his right knee so I had to discuss this with the team doctor.

"It seems that he cannot play against Japan. But I'm confident we can play a decent match with another midfielder."

Cho added: "I'm worried that it's the knee which had surgery before. If Park doesn't take a rest, he might not be able to play in the Asian Cup either.

"So I think it's best to give him a rest. Park also doesn't want to take a risk."

The knock could leave Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with Nani as his only fit senior winger, after Ryan Giggs and Antonio Valencia were ruled out of action. Youngsters Bebe and Gabriel Obertan could now be in contention for the home clash against West Bromwich Albion when the Premier League reconvenes at the weekend.

Now those silly actions from the Serbian fans could cost their team if UEFA decide to give Italy the default 3-0 victory.

Anderson reveals Porto wish

QUOTE
Manchester United midfielder Anderson has revealed that he hopes to return to Porto at some stage.

The Brazil international moved to Old Trafford from the Portuguese giants for £17.5m in 2007.

He enjoyed a productive opening to his Red Devils career, but has suffered with injuries and a loss of form over recent seasons.

A reported bust-up with boss Sir Alex Ferguson during pre-season has seen him slip further down the pecking order, making just four appearances in all competitions this term.

The 22-year-old has now hinted that he may be prepared to move on in search of regular first-team opportunities.

He admits that a second stint at Porto would certainly appeal to him, but has given no indication as to when he would like to make such a move.

"I am good in Manchester but I'd like to return to Portugal and my preference would be Porto. I love the country," said Anderson.

Rooney - No fitness problems

QUOTE
Misfiring England striker Wayne Rooney insists he has no issues with his fitness following Tuesday's draw with Montenegro.

Fabio Capello's side could only manage a goalless stalemate against the fledgling side in Euro 2012 qualifying action at Wembley, with Manchester United man Rooney missing a couple of crucial chances in an all-round below-par performance.

The 24-year-old, who has been surrounded by media allegations regarding his private life of late, was withdrawn by Sir Alex Ferguson for United's most recent two matches, with the manager putting his absence down to an ankle injury.

However, speaking after Tuesday night's clash, Rooney insisted he is firing on all cylinders and has not missed a training session this season.

"I felt sharp tonight," Rooney told Sky Sports News.

"(I had) a couple of chances, the first one maybe I could've done better. The keeper made a good save on the second one.

"I've been training for the last two months, I haven't missed a training session.

"So I've got no problems with my fitness."

Chicharito on the mark again

QUOTE
On a frustrating day for United's international contingent, only one Red sampled victory in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. Elsehwere, Chicharito continued his hot streak for Mexico with his fourth goal in five internationals...

Chicharito was the only United player to score in Tuesday's international calendar, as Mexico were held in a friendly with Venezuela in Juarez. The United striker headed home a simple finish to bring his side level, but El Tri ultimately had to make do with a 2-2 draw with the 10-man visitors.

Darren Fletcher’s Scotland came within 10 minutes of an unforgettable result against Spain. Craig Levein’s side had roared back from two goals down to level at 2-2 midway through the second half, only for Fernando Llorente to volley home a late winner.

Rio Ferdinand captained England against Montenegro for the first time since officially taking the role, but he, Wayne Rooney and the rest of Fabio Capello’s side were frustrated in a tepid goalless draw at Wembley. Rooney had two openings, but was twice denied by visiting goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic.

The Republic of Ireland withstood a late onslaught to draw 1-1 in Slovakia. John O’Shea completed the entire match and Darron Gibson was a 41st minute substitute for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side, who might have taken all three points had Robbie Keane’s penalty not been saved.

Northern Ireland followed their creditable draw against Italy with a 1-1 draw with the Faroe Islands. Jonny Evans completed 90 minutes, while Corry Evans was a late substitute in a frustrating match for Nigel Worthington’s side.

Nani couldn’t repeat his goalscoring heroics of Friday’s win over Denmark, but he looked lively and completed 87 minutes as Portugal notched a 3-1 win in Iceland to breathe new life into their qualifying campaign.

Disturbances among the travelling Serbian supporters meant that Italy’s clash with Nemanja Vidic and his colleagues was abandoned. The Naples match lasted just eight minutes before it was halted.

Ji-sung Park missed South Korea’s goalless draw with Japan due to a minor knee injury.

Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck all started for England under-21s as Stuart Pearce’s side notched a goalless draw in Romania. That assured a 2-1 aggregate victory and takes the Three Lions through to next summer’s European Championships.

Owen Hargreaves ready for Manchester United comeback

QUOTE
Owen Hargreaves is set to make his long-awaited return from injury in Manchester United's Premier League match against West Brom on Saturday.

The 29-year-old midfielder has not started a match since September 2008 because of a chronic knee problem.

"Owen should play some part on Saturday," the player's knee surgeon Dr Richard Steadman told BBC Sport.

"Our physical therapist, Luke O'Brien, has been working very closely with United's coaches on his rehab."

England international Hargreaves underwent surgery on each of his knees at Steadman's clinic in Vail, Colorado, in 2008 and his recovery has been beset by problems.

His last appearance for United came in May, when he played for the final three minutes of the Premier League match against Sunderland.

Hargreaves was expected to be fit for the start of this season but suffered a setback during the summer and had to return to Colorado for further work with Steadman.

The surgeon conceded: "It's been a long road back and there have been some setbacks along the way.

"But I've got a lot of admiration for the way Owen has responded - he's worked very hard and has never given up. Things are looking good for him now."

Hargreaves joined United from Bayern Munich in July 2007 but his last start for the Old Trafford outfit came in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in September 2008.

Wigan braced to lose Cleverley

QUOTE
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez expects on-loan Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley to be recalled early in the new year.

The England Under 21 international, who helped the Young Lions book their place in next summer's European Championship on Tuesday, is on a season-long loan deal at the DW Stadium.

However, United can ask for their player to return under the terms of the contract, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson hinting last week that a January recall was on the cards.

And Martinez feels that scenario is likely as the Red Devils look to plug the gap left by injured midfielder Antonio Valencia.

Recall

"Obviously the injury to Antonio Valencia has increased the chance of Tom going back to United," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

"There has been no contact between the two sides, but it is only natural what is occurring because Tom is such a good player.

"We all know how highly United rate Tom - that's why we had to do everything we could to get him here in the first place.

"I have always said that we have to enjoy him for every day he is here - just as we want Tom to enjoy being here at Wigan Athletic. And that's all that matters, for however long that period might be.

"It's only a matter of time before Tom is playing at the very top level with United. It's not if, but when."

Cleverley has endured a frustrating start to his career with the Latics, sustaining a knee injury in training which has restricted his involvement.

But after proving his fitness while representing England, the 21-year-old is back in contention for Wigan's trip to Newcastle on Sunday.

Injury

"Tom has played very well for the England Under 21s and has suffered no after-effects to the injury he suffered last month," added Martinez.

"We have all seen him in training and you can see by the way he behaves around the place that he is going to be a top, top footballer. And he will be.

"He will be in contention for the Newcastle game but, from then on, whatever will be will be."

Hargreaves wait continues

QUOTE
Owen Hargreaves will not line up against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday, contrary to reports in the media earlier this week.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the midfielder has picked up a calf injury and is not available for selection.

“Owen’s not ready. He’s injured,” Sir Alex said. “He got a calf injury and has missed training for the last few days.”

The news contradicts reports from across the Atlantic that suggested Hargreaves was set to make his first senior start since September 2008. Dr Richard Steadman, who has overseen part of Hargreaves’ rehabilitation, was quoted this week as saying: “Owen should play some part on Saturday.”

But Sir Alex insists the statement is “not accurate”.

“I pick the team and I have been doing that for a while,” he said. “We’re having some difficulties with the doctor [Steadman] in Colorado. It’s not fair to the player, to the fans and to ourselves to say the player is going to be playing. It’s ridiculous.

“It’s a small interference that has caused a bit of confusion. Owen’s not available for West Brom.”

One player who could take to the pitch is Ryan Giggs. The Welshman missed United’s games against Valencia and Sunderland after picking up a hamstring injury in the Reds’ draw at Bolton in late September, but Sir Alex says he’s now ready to re-enter the fray.

“Giggsy’s been out for a couple of weeks but he’s fit again.”

The boss also confirmed that all those involved in international matches this week returned to Carrington unscathed and applauded FIFA’s recent decision to schedule matches on Fridays and Tuesdays. Previously, those games would have taken place on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

“It’s a fantastic move to bring these games forward,” Sir Alex said, “particularly the Tuesday games. That gives us an extra day to prepare [for the weekend].”

Our 2nd half performance is really sweat.gif Credits to WBA, they seems to be wanted it more than us hence the point shared.

Personally, I think we did get affected after Giggs went off injured. If I remember correctly, the commentator did mentioned we go to 4-3-3 after Gibson came on for Giggs.

Boss: It was inexplicable

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson says he struggled to comprehend the goals United conceded in Saturday’s shock 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion, but he was in no doubt that the Reds should have killed off the Baggies before those chaotic, costly five minutes at the start of the second half.

The United boss didn’t pin the blame on Edwin van der Sar, whose error gifted West Brom their second goal, but instead said his team had enough opportunities to have put the match out of sight long before then.

“From our first-half performance, which was outstanding, the criticism is that we didn’t finish them off,” the boss told MUTV. “Where it should have been 5-0 at half-time, we’ve gone in 2-0 up. That is an area we have to be concerned about.

“Everton away should have been five or six, we should have got three or four at Fulham; and we’re losing points because of it. It’s not a defining result in terms of where the league’s going to end up, but we can’t keep doing that. We are very frustrated about it. Two-nil is never a great scoreline. If you lose a goal, it gives the other team a lifeline. I always think 1-0 is better. It keeps the concentration better, you push more for the second goal.”

As for the goals conceded, Sir Alex didn’t apportion blame. “They got a real break for the first goal. I didn’t think it was a foul. But they got the luck after that, it came off the inside of Evra’s leg and it was just a bad bit of luck. The second goal… what can you say? Edwin has been playing for over 20 years as a top goalkeeper and he was probably in primary school the last time he made a mistake like that. You just have to wipe it off the slate. There’s nothing you can do about it, it was just one of these inexplicable errors.”

So United remain unbeaten, but that statistic is no consolation for damaging dropped points. “There are two ways of looking at it,” concluded Sir Alex. “If we were a team in the middle of the league you’d say we were undefeated. But for Manchester United that’s not good enough.”

We must show our character

QUOTE
Patrice Evra has urged his United team-mates to show their true mettle in the coming weeks after dropping yet more cheap points against West Brom.

Having been in a commanding position at the break thanks to goals from Javier Hernandez and Nani, the Reds failed to recover from a freakish five minutes at the start of the second period which saw the Baggies draw level.

"We need to start killing games off," a passionate Evra told MUTV. "We need to take our chances and score more goals when we can. It's not like we don't have a lot of opportunities.

"When you are 2-0 up you should go on to win the game. If you make it three or four nil that makes it very difficult for other teams to come back. But when you keep things at the same tempo and it's still only 2-0, the opposition only need to score one goal to make things difficult for you. Everyone must take their share of the blame, not just the defence.

"For it to happen once is okay, but twice... I remember talking about the same thing after we played Liverpool saying I hope we don't give away a lead again like we did that day, but we did it again today.

"We have two choices - either we accept it or we don't accept it and I think it's the moment to not accept it," he added. "We're still unbeaten, but, to me, five draws almost feels like we have lost games. It's not Manchester United. We need to work hard and show our character and I'm confident we can do that."

Giggs faces spell on sidelines

QUOTE
It looks like United will be without Ryan Giggs for an extended period of time after the Welshman suffered a recurrence of the hamstring in jury that forced him off against Bolton Wanderers back in September.

Giggs was forced off shortly before half-time against West Bromwich Albion, and United missed him badly in the second half.

The 36-year-old had trained all week and looked to be over the hamstring problem, but he suffered a relapse and he will need to be rested.

“The loss of Ryan as a wide player was a big one for us,” said Sir Alex. “He’s done his hamstring again. He got it against Bolton but he’d trained all week. He’d been doing very well, but it’s gone again and maybe we need to give him a longer recovery.”

Giggs’ departure from the game made a real difference as United didn’t have a natural winger on the bench to bring on in his place.

“We had a problem with Ryan coming off,” explained the boss. “We maybe didn’t have enough cover in the wide positions. Bebe had picked up a knock. He’s OK, but we decided to leave him out.”

If something is not right about Rooney, Evra is the same as well. Ever since WC, he has not been the same player we saw last season.

Welcome to my world. Hmm, actually most of the seniors that shy-ed away from posting here. We are too tired to repeat ourselves unlike Wan. Hence, the sarcasm. But apparently, even sarcasm isn't even allowed in the thread anymore. This thread is boring.

Well, its yours and their choice and I have no control on what you all want to do. Plus its not like I am getting paid for each post.

The thing is that you have been constantly posting in a sarcastic way and it bring nothing to the discussion except attracting people to start reply and flaming each others.

Also do not think that masking/replacing any profanities with symbols like * or x will not means you are posting profanities/vulgars.

QUOTE(boxsystem @ Oct 17 2010, 07:48 PM)
You sir, definitely are a joke. How big is your hunger for glory? When MU was doing great before last season, you were hailing the team like nobody's business. And when MU is not doing well, you change your glorified moments to Chelsea's. Therefore, I would gladly assume that you are an *******.

With or without Valencia, our main problem remains in the unbelievably inconsistent defence. DEAR LAWD HELP US ALL.

I totally have no idea at all what makes our defense suddenly so vulnerable unsure.gif

Few matches ago we can say the lack of Rio commanding the backline but now? Still come down to individual mistakes and lapses of concentration I guess sad.gif

Real refute Rooney rumours

QUOTE
Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has played down rumours linking the club with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The England international has seen his future at Old Trafford cast into doubt, with his relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson reported to have become strained.

Reports have suggested that Rooney is now seeking an imminent exit from United, having informed the club that he has no intention of penning a new contract and would like to move on.

Inevitably, the apparent availability of a global superstar has seen Real Madrid mentioned as possible suitors.

The Spanish giants have never been afraid to dig deep for top talent and have previous when it comes to snatching the cream of the crop away from Old Trafford.

They splashed out £25million on David Beckham in 2003 and a world record transfer fee to lure Cristiano Ronaldo away from the Red Devils last summer, and would have no problem funding a similar move for Rooney.

However, Valdano has sought to bring about an end to the incessant rumours by insisting that Real have no need to bolster their attacking ranks.

With Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema already on the books at Santiago Bernabeu, he believes a move for Rooney is unnecessary.

Firepower

Valdano was quoted as saying on Telemadrid: "Madrid have two great strikers; Higuain and Cristiano, who already showed last season that they are capable of scoring 60 goals between them.

"As well as that there are Di Maria and Ozil, who are going to help these two goalscorers. The question is, who would we move aside if we signed another striker?"

He added: "It's not a debate in Madrid. Mourinho had to come out and stop these types of rumours. And as well as that, Benzema has not had the last word."

While keen to distance Real from Rooney, Valdano has refused to rule out the prospect of making a move for Athletic Bilbao's in-form Fernando Llorente at some point in the future.

He said: "I like him, but from that to finding him a place in Madrid, that won't be easy. Every season there will be a new player, but it doesn't always have to be a centre-forward.

"Llorente is improving a lot and he is ready for new experiences, but often the media are discussing things that are not happening in the club."

Whatever happens, Valdano is adamant that no business will be conducted during the January transfer window, with Real more than happy with the quality they currently have at their disposal.

"In January there will be neither ins nor outs. June is a long way away," he said.

QUOTE
The former Everton youngster was in breathtaking form for much of last season before sustaining an ankle problem against Bayern Munich at the end of March, from which point on he has looked a shadow of his former self.

In the 21 games prior to the injury in the first leg of United's UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit, Rooney had scored 22 goals from open play. In the 21 games since, he has found the net just once from open play.

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11667_6452096,00.html

Only scored once from open play since March. Even IF he indeed not planning to sign the extension (current deal will end by summer 2012), he will has to sort himself out and get back the form because we definitely will not be letting him go on cheap.

QUOTE
Rooney would not be the first big name to leave Old Trafford after falling out with Ferguson, as David Beckham, Paul Ince, Roy Keane, Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy will all testify.

Player will come and go so it will be a setback but it will not be the end of the world IF that moment come.

Keane offers Rooney advice

QUOTE
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has told unsettled striker Wayne Rooney to look after 'number one' after he reportedly decided not to renew his contract.

The 39-year-old Ipswich Town manager helped the Red Devils win seven Premier League titles before he left in 2005 after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

It now seems Rooney is following a similar trail and leaving before his time after publically contradicting Ferguson by stating he has not been suffering from an ankle injury as previously claimed.

It is now understood that Rooney is against signing a new contract at Old Trafford meaning the club's hierarchy could decide to cash in on his services sooner rather than later.

Falling out

"Players and managers fall out all the time," said Keane. "It's part of life.

"If I was to offer advice to Wayne, who is a good lad, I would tell him to make sure he looks after number one.

"Players are pieces of meat - that's how I look at it. When your time's up, your time's up.

"Luckily for Wayne he's at a good age and he's fit."

Along with Keane, David Beckham and Jaap Stam are other players who have left Old Trafford after falling foul of Ferguson, although he does not believe Rooney's exit is inevitable.

"It depends on the situation and whether you have been lied to or not," he said. "But, as usual, we are second guessing what has gone on at the club, which is dangerous."

Jose expects Rooney to stay

QUOTE
Jose Mourinho expects Sir Alex Ferguson to persuade Wayne Rooney to stay at Manchester United as chief executive David Gill confirms the club will comment on the situation at the 'appropriate time'.

Rooney's future at Old Trafford has been plunged into doubt amid reports that talks regarding a contract extension have broken down.

The England striker's current deal expires in 2012 and there is speculation that Rooney does not currently want to sign a new contract.

Rumours of a rift with United boss Ferguson have surfaced following Rooney's omission from the team in recent weeks on the back of allegations regarding the 24-year-old's private life.

The situation has led to suggestions that United will either sell Rooney in January or at the end of the season to avoid the risk of losing the former Everton starlet for nothing.

Real Madrid are among the clubs to have been linked with a bid for Rooney, but the Spanish giants have been quick to rule out a winter swoop for the forward.

And Real coach Mourinho does not expect Rooney to leave the Red Devils, believing Ferguson will talk his star man into signing an extension.

Not available

"I don't think he will (become available)," said Mourinho. "I think the big man will persuade him to stay."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has kept his own counsel, although he looked relaxed as he attended a £1million extension of United's charitable work for UNICEF at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon.

Ferguson will doubtless be questioned on the issue on Tuesday when he is due to attend a press conference ahead of United's UEFA Champions League encounter with Turkish champions Bursaspor.

Chief executive Gill has at least hinted some clarification of the Rooney situation would eventually be made.

Gill said: "We will say something at an appropriate time. But this is not an appropriate time."
