Arapaima gigas is under CatII in cites listing and same goes with Neoceratodus forsteri i.e Aussie Lung.
Both type are controlled items for future conservation to prevent them from future extinction.
*
I thought the bulk of Arapaima you see in our Malaysian market are locally bred ??

Aussie lung-fish will cost an arm and a leg be it WC or CB , go for African sp like P.annectens quite cheap and quite often available in our market !!

Spare A thought these fish will grow huge and fast !!

And if you go to the right breeder you can get them for less than RM 10 a pc (converting them to freshwater takes less than 2 months or about 10 water changes ) Some breeder / hatcheries will even do that for you to almost freshwater !!

hi samperth,

less than RM10? are u very sure? bearing in mind, if its selling at RM10 per pcs.. i seriously dont think the conservation status will still be "vulnerable"? its IUCN Red List threatened species - the same

status as overly harvest Betta macrostoma. and question...

why dont people trade b. macrostoma at RM10?

if its RM10, the popularity of the fish will just be as much as food fish.. patin, marbled goby (soon hock) etc..

and why dont the kelong fish breeders sell Red Grouper at RM10? why pay RM100+ for the fish? correct me if i'm wrong.

also, another thing to highlight. those fishes that grows to extensive sizes in the wild will NOT likely to grow as huge as u thought. so dont take that as an major issue. go and check out those fish keepers at indonesia, japan

and taiwan, ur jaw will drop when u check their tanks! sometimes i wonder where are all the msian monster fish lovers..

well all in all, its individual preference.

cheers bro! smile.gif

Just because you cant access them or seen them being sold/breed in a commercial scale !! Does not mean they dont exist at that price !!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromileptes_altivelis

Those you selling are fingerlings bear that in mind !!
Polka Dots , Panther Grouper sell for over RM 300 per KG but I can get them in fingerlings size at RM 5 a pc !! This sp is also"vulnerable" Am I right !!

This fish (grouper sp as compared to B. macrostoma) can be milked and eggs stripped to produce thousands upon thousands of fingerlings per pair or trio of adult fish !!

You cant compare fingerlings(sold by the inch) to adult which are sold by the kg !! and different market the price do differ a lot ie Arapaima wholesale for less than RM 100 a pc here in Malaysia but can retail up to AUD 2000 a pc in Australia !!

Sorry I kill you cash cow if I did !!

bro, where do u get this fish for rm 10 ?  If this is true i am willing to get 100 pieces . Very nice looking fish.
*
Sure I can supply that , first you do up an import permit (inter-states one ) and I can supply you RM 10 / fish on this sp (If you need them to be fresh water I can arrange that for a bit more I think - just tell the hatcheries up to 2 months before ) plus freight charges !!

BTW I am Sabah Based !!

BTW ask those fish keeper in Europe , USA , Taiwan Japanese how much they pay for their Arapaima @ 4 - 6 inch and compare that to our retail or wholesale price !!

Since on Arapaima how many captives are as large if not larger than those in the wild ?? If space and diet provided are right they will grow as large if not larger / heavier than their wild cousin should apply to all sp !!

I am just telling/warning all potential buyer or winner on the size and not asking them not to buy or rear them but you have to bring up "Kelong fish breeder selling red grouper at RM 10 ....etc" !!

Just in case anyone doubt what I say try give this Taiwanese guy a mail and confirm all !!

I know a private hatchery in Sabah who breeds them like nobodies biz - 100 is child's play to them , they do in lot of 1000s or more !!
They do most Grouper ....etc Plus a few snapper !!

Someone closer to all of you !! See how much per piece ? (min 5000)

cool!!u r from borneo aite?lastime i heard they got a lot of bumblebee grouper..is it true?
*
True but less are bred nowadays due to their " slow " growth - Breeders nowadays breeding hybrid grouper more Below are hots candidate for cage farming !!
- Giant grouper @ Bumblebee grouper @ Epinephelus lanceolatus X Humpback grouper @ Chromileptes altivelis
X Tiger Grouper @ Epinephelus fuscoguttatus

- Tiger Grouper @ Epinephelus fuscoguttatus X Humpback grouper (Chromileptes altivelis)

The Giant X Tiger one quite nice , am trying to " freshwater" some for fun Just started 2 wks ago

Next week or two getting some Humpback X Tiger for my cages but some I will hold back to " freshwater " them !!

So check back often to see some salt water fish in a freshwater tank - wonder what should I mix in to convince others they are indeed in fresh water tank !! Arapaima , arowana or Tapah or motor ray ???

Cheers

Wow thx for the info!  notworthy.gif

And i understand they're omnivores but what do you feed it with? Vegetables?
*
I treat them as sucker-fish to remove algae but do supplement pellets to get a well-fed , full-bodied fish !!

Cheers
