THAT aside, where can I find fish shop in kl/pj area that carries tigrinus catfish? Cty in pg has a defective one if anyone is interested.  hmm.gif

Well I was answering a question and anyways if I was super rich I'd have had a whole pond of monster fish by now built by consultants rather than hoping for free advice from forums but I got lucky as I found Jason's shop and he is quite sure that I can achieve my goal using free flowing river water. Mission accomplished IMHO. Anyways, good luck with your search for the catfish which I'm sure Jason or khairul anwar could easily source for you.

Back to the topic at hand, in terms of keeping fishes as 'pets' then all I have is a pond full of Koi and a marine tank both of which are at my Damansara House. I've always wanted monster freshwater fishes but didn't want to rush into it until I'm confident I can provide the best possible environment for them.

Jason,

You mean kept by monster size person or in a monster sized pond? cry.gif

Hahahah no lah, I'm just kidding.

Anyways, you will definitely be coming because I'd have no idea how to build the pond on my own LOL. As mentioned the earlier pond shown to you was built using common sense which doesn't mean its as the best for the fish (depth, length, etc). Plus that was a pure cement pond with sand used on the bottom and because the water cycles 24/7, I have no idea if there are leaks because obviously the water is being topped up even as it leaks out. Nevertheless, I will probably use pond liners just to be safe.

Anyways, I will come to your shop next weekend or the following week to discuss the fishes first as well as the fibreglass tanks, etc. As you've mentioned some fishes need time to source so we'll decide on a list of fishes and I'll buy the tank, etc first and give you whatever deposit you need for the fishes needed and once you've sourced them I'll pick them up hopefully all at the same time.

Well bro, technically its not a hobby just yet. Don't worry about the length, took me maybe 10-12 mins max but if at least one person learns something about bottle nose dolphins then its time well spent. Forums live and die on the willingness of members to take the time to share knowledge, experiences, etc. To be honest, on other forums on which I'm more active that's considered normal length for me and pretty much everyone is used to it by now LOL

Well compared to an Arapaima its not really all that huge is it? 4-5ft in length at most?

Even taking into account the 'biggest alligator gar caught' figures they don't seem to be that big even in the wild in Asia? Plus compared to an Arapaima its not going to look super huge is it? Anyways hopefully I have time to map out the new pond using string to see dimensions and then go from there.

Anyways, I might get a couple of catfish as they are bottom feeders and two arapaimas which feed at the surface so each sort of have their own space. If it were you what else would you add with a maximum of 8 in total but they must be compatible and be substantial in terms of size so they don't eat each other. What's your opinion Ben?

Currently, I have this pond which took two guys just under 2 weeks to build by hand. Both have no prior experience in building ponds so they sort of figured it out themselves.

user posted image

This is where the water comes from and is fresh river water which is channeled in PVC pipes that comes in rolls 150m long each and we went through quite a few roles but this was done easily a year ago and has never clogged up. However, Jason recommended that future pond have multiple inlets to reduce dead space.

user posted image

This is water clarity (first picture taken sometime back, second picture last week) and considering its rainy season and there is no filtration whatsoever aside from netting on the PVC inlet pipes so that no debris can enter. Otherwise, all sorts of sediment is able to enter so I reckon on a whole its quite good. New pond will be deeper is going to need proper system in place.

The water cycles 24/7 as there is an overflow which leads back to the same river which runs for 200m. Basically there is nothing else upstream in terms of properties or houses so its as close to the source as possible.

user posted image

If you guys want any catfish just PM me because its purely for consumption as well as friends and family.

I eat them. j/k. They're my pets. Not fish you'd want to keep for commercial purposes due to their awfully slow growth rate. I'm a hardcore fish keeper. I also keep river fishes like you do in my factorys mud pond for own consumption.

The pima is currently in my 10 footer 560gal acrylic tank with the rtcs, tsn, rtctsn, gator gars and temensis. I'll try to get more pic when I get off work later. Kelahs are in 4x8x2.5 tank. Filtration was homemade skippy style + the ohf that came with the tank. Koi tank is similar except that it's 3' high. Aros are each housed in a 6x2.5x2.5 with eheim pro 3. I have plenty of reason to not run the sump tank system because it gave me so much problems in the past (14yrs back). Maybe it was manufacturing defects but I've not looked back since I moved from that system to Pro2 and currently Pro3.

Ben, I do apologize but don't you think its odd for khairul to tell me anything about respect when pimpin was all cool about it? Anyway, I shall stop there .

Pimpin,

Do you build your pond lower than the river water level? How d'you get the water to stabilize ata the current level without ball float ? Unless the water is drawn from the upper part of the river then again even river water level fluctuates. No offence but your pond looks like my concrete cube holding pond minus the waterfall but notworthy.gif it's an effort nonetheless laugh.gif

ggMing, Thanks! I'll wait. You should still have my nums. I msg you the other day. I'm also into gulper cat, whats their size and is there any way you could differentiate between male and female? I'd be very keen to get a pair. And if you could also source amelanistic rtc let me know. Thought mine could get company since the bio load is way too light. I might be just asking but if the price is right then who knows... smile.gif

Ivan,

That's pretty much what it is. I was going to say a bowl but it seemed a bit crude. The water comes close to 500m upriver and the 'pond' itself is higher than the river and the overflow goes back into the river but downstream. The river water level used to be between knee and waist high depending on which part of the river but currently the deepest point has been increased to roughly 10 feet.

You're right in saying that the river water does fluctuate but only during rainy season when its noticeably higher with a stronger current/flow. Regardless, the level inside the pond does not fluctuate as no matter what there is constant flow into the pond so its just a question of how fast the pond overflows back into the river. I hope that explanation makes sense.

But I believe with a little guidance, the guys who built it could easily build a proper pond as they're quite handy with their hands and very creative; using whatever that's available in on the property or surrounding woods. Slightly off-topic but these two guys built two of these gazebos by hand; which each taking about 10 days to complete. Even the bridge was hand built using bamboo that line the perimeter of the property.
user posted image

Anyways, your collection is nothing short of impressive! I see you're into Koi; a hobby I've yet to appreaciate. Currently I only have cheap Koi because the house came with a pond complete with filtration, etc however the depth apparently isn't ideal (2ft) but leaving it empty would look weird. Plus, at the time my old friend from Uni just started a Koi business in Tropicana (Koi Division) so I bought the cheaper ones just to show my support for an old friend. Otherwise, I generally don't know much about Koi and I don't see that changing in the future.

Looking forward to more pictures of the 10ft tank and even some of the Koi tank as well; always thought they needed deep ponds like 4+ feet as it affects the growth but what do I know LOL

Added on November 21, 2010, 11:34 amP.S: How deep is the 10ft tank?
