Anybody here owns Pantodon buchholzi - The African Freshwater Butterfly Fish? They're like miniature mottled brown asian arowana with trailing fins...
I keep seeing this everywhere I go. At least 2-3 shops this week.

QUOTE(einrennima @ Jun 10 2011, 10:20 AM)
hi [PIMPIN],
if i'm not mistaken, we once met at ggming place when i was purchased 5 pacu..
btw can you tell me your arapaima pond design??
i'm planning to build my own pond for my arapaima.
*
Hey man, how are the pacus doing? Yup, remember meeting you at the shop. I think you came with a friend right?

Anyway, building as in DIY or getting it built by someone?

QUOTE(einrennima @ Jun 10 2011, 11:04 AM)
amboi...so hugemongous pond...
how many gigas could put in there??
actually i'm planning building a pond at my kampung at Perak.
jason, for 1 full grown gigas what dimension would u think be suitable??
btw jason, do u have Thalassophryne amazonica in stock?? hihi  tongue.gif
*
I think fishes that can grow big would appreciate as much space as possible. Certainly it couldn't possibly hurt.

What sort of dimensions do you have in mind? Also, what sort of setup do you have planned?

Pimpin,I have 3 words for u bro...TOLD U SO...kesian dem....
*
Oh I'm not bothered. The RTCs had not been taking too well to live food since they were raised on pellets and since the day they arrived at the shop, I've noticed they never grew as fast as most people said they would.

I'm actually very glad they've now sort of settled into the pond and have no problem eating 4" fishes. As for kesian, well you also feed your fishes live feeders so how is this any different?

Yep.I'm suprised y they are nt growing fast.mine is growing way faster.as we were saying tat day,it might be due to temp...

Actually they were very very small when Pang got them and I've commented many times about their slow growth and relatively modest appetites during those months they were growing out the tank at the shop.

as for my future pond, i don't have the slightest idea what sort of dimension  sad.gif
pimpin, for one full grown gigas what pond size should it be?? your help is most appreciated  smile.gif
Seriously, I don't know. But I'm guessing the Arapaima isn't going to be kept all by itself right? Surely there will be tank mates so short answer is as big as you can afford.

What did you have in mind? Both setup and budget wise.

QUOTE(kasturipurba @ Jun 14 2011, 12:36 AM)
hi guys, wanna ask something, how much cost for a fiberglass tank, with glass in front of it? about 5ft x 2.5ft. saw this one at a aquarium shop, but likely it about 6ft something.
*
Fins n' Greens ada lah these tanks, plus can choose to have add on sump filtration that sits nicely at the edge.

QUOTE(kasturipurba @ Jun 14 2011, 01:20 AM)
really? how much they cost actually? i'll try to get one,, it comes with the filtration fiberglass box rite?
*
Yeah, that's what I meant by sump, since the filtration system has several compartments and pretty much does everything a sump does except its placed above the tank. Other than that, same thing I guess.

Price? Depends on size lah bro, got numerous sizes for tank and the filter compartments as well. Plus, if you want the media, etc included then I'm sure can get an all-in-price. But they're not expensive given their size but just don't look good (not the nicest looking things around).

Call Pang lah for quotes dude, I don't work there so I wouldn't know LOL tongue.gif

Anyone know where I can get big sized feeders? Ideally something along the lines of the cheap local Koi around 3" in size. Got some from FnG on Monday but limited stock.

Actually, what feeder fishes would be best? Criteria would be the size and price so long as max RM2 each since I need about 50 daily.

My Gars won't eat anything that's dead. Well, the two Gars I raised since they were babies only take live fishes. I have another two which were given by owners who couldn't house them anymore - these two eat dead fishes. Currently all housed in a grow out pond with an Arapaima (used to be two, one died a couple weeks ago) along with three RTC who eat monster sinking pellets.

Have another two juvenile Arapaimas in a grow out tank before moving to the grow out pond mentioned above. Their final home yet to be decided since they're still babies.

They feed on 3-4" comets or similarly sized lampam depending on what's available. About 200 minimum feeders weekly. Anyway, this Gar was given up by its owner less than a week ago so I took him in. Sorry, I just use my mobile for photos.

yeob - no offence but you're way overstocked even if you added another three 4ft tanks.

Just for reference, I have four Gars, two Arapaima Gigas and two Red Tail Catfish. Their temporary home is 22'x15'x3' and this is what they eat every couple of weeks (ignore the 40 tag in the bag, they are packed 100 to a bag, the tag was leftover from old bags - takes over an hour to bag the feeder fishes):

If you're going away for only 4 days, just put in two days worth of feeders - as in how many you feed a day and double that figure. The fish can and will survive don't worry. Supposedly, juvenile gars need access to food all the time for the first 12" of growth in order to avoid them being stunted meaning they should be able to eat whenever they want and not rely on being fed. However this is a point of much discussion on MFK (MonsterFishKeepers) forum and personally, I've always made sure there is at least a couple of extra feeders around for them. But then I used to do many water changes because feeder fishes usually carry various diseases and if you do tend to overfeed, don't be surprised by the amount of waste your gar can generate.

OT - Interesting fact I came across on MFK, apparently the size of the enclosure for juvenile gars should be no more than 5x the length of the fish because it can lead to them crashing into the aquarium panels and that is what causes their spine to snap.

thanx TokiToki...future plan is to put them in either pond or fiber tank or maybe mini mega aqua(if got budget la..haha)
bout the dimension never come across yet..maybe need you to consult me in future...can aa?
i also think 4ft tank is not sufficient for them but temporary b4 move to my own house.
currently stay with inlaw so kind of x best to put bigger tank..huhu
waaaaaa...PIMPIN...even my lfs dont have that so much stock...hahaha
well thanx for reference...really appreciate it. can suggest what shud i do with my overstocked tank?  icon_question.gif

Added on January 19, 2012, 10:18 pmbtw PIMPIN, how do u manage all those feeder fish?all of them will go to ur quarantine or straight away into ur predator mouth?
*
I think your best option in the long run is definitely a pond or if you can afford it, a monster aquaria exhibit or display like the ones you see on MFK. However, those cost a bomb but to each his own. My fishes usually arrive at the LFS and spend sometimes up to a week in a fibre tank and when its time to restock, they are re-bagged and brought home.

As for how they are fed, the feeders are released into 'the arena' in batches of 30-40 daily. Sometimes they'll go through the feeders instantly but sometimes there are leftovers who perhaps are simply too fast or the fish have had enough.

QUOTE(TokiToki @ Jan 20 2012, 01:28 AM)
Haha I think PIMPIN is the best to ask for advice when it comes to housing these monsters, mine aren't really mega ones...
*
Thanks, but I'm really still new at this and pretty much rely on MFK for information.

QUOTE(Yeobster @ Jan 20 2012, 02:36 AM)
hahaha...thanx L3()nZ...manage to remember all of them when everyday spent a lot of time with them...hahaha  biggrin.gif
looks like he's the man. will consult with him later. his 22'x15'x3' is also pretty cool..
always dream to have mini mega tank but the cost  whistling.gif hahaha
how cool is that if our house walls are the tank...go kitchen see monster,go to bed again c monster, go toilet also c monster...hahahahahaha  thumbup.gif
*
Sorry bro, my fishes are housed in ponds - the one mentioned above is a concrete pond. Although I'd love a massive tank, the only way to properly keep monster fishes are in ponds. You'll notice they grow a lot faster especially in the case of this particular pond of mine which is cycled with fresh, clear and clean river water 24/7 basically creating as close to a natural environment as possible.
