Since yesterday, I've been fooling around with some dry ice (DI) and a pair of chilly1 DI containers. Here are some pictures and screenshot of what happened biggrin.gif

The key to a successful sub-zero cooling is the insulation so I started by coating the back of the motherboard around the processor socket with some liquid electrical tape.

The same thing was also done to the front and back of the graphics card

Next I applied some foam insulation tape on both the front and back of the motherboard and graphics card.

After all the work insulating the graphics card, there was some problem with the mountings. Due to the rapid dwindling of my DI supply, I decided not to waste anymore time fixing it and went ahead benching with DI only on the processor.

I was rushing just now because there's only a few block of DI left, forgot to stick one of the thermocouple on the base of the DI container doh.gif

The bug is still there but you don't have to worry about it unless you have a tripple cascade.

Kinda lazy to take out the DFI from the case, clean up the dielectric grease and them put it back in the case tongue.gif

No LN2 for me, too risky sweat.gif

LN2 not only dangerous to u but it kills the proc and mobo efficiently also..
Arj if im not mistaken, DI wouldnt be enough to cause ice to occur all over the mobo..So with proper insulation like master arj just shown us here..Ur hardware is quite safe..

Haiya i got slow streamyx connection today, some pics dont show up..
Im dissapointed..

Btw, congrats 3.2Ghz is just awesome..
Lookin at those step by step pics, it motivates me to put my winnie under that DI..

I know winnie had subzero bug, but u might never know..

Hmm but those containers, How much u got them for..
and all those stuff such as electrical tape can be obtained from normal hardware shop?

Both of the containers costs more than the processor sweat.gif

Yeah, they all can be found at good hardware store like Ace Hardware.

LN2, im not sure cos normally its not accesible to consumers..
Its just like all those acids and chemical stuffs..
If u happen to know somebody working at science lab, i think this might come handy..
Hmm, maybe i jus give my buddy a call and try asking if he could get his hands on LN2..

some funny thoughts to share..

Dry Ice Obligatory Warning
Madshrimps ©

Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and it can concentrate in low areas or in enclosed spaces (like a car or a room where dry ice is sublimating). Normal air is 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and only 0.035% Carbon Dioxide. If the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air rises above 5%, carbon dioxide can become toxic.

Arj, u sure u r not toxicated laugh.gif
Any clue where did u get those big blocks of DI..

Three stage cascade can easily do -100. The cold bug is around -90 if I'm not mistaken sweat.gif

I bought the dry ice for RM3.80 per kg from a place in Shah Alam, somewhere behind the aquatic center. I got their contacts from Baskin Robins biggrin.gif

erkkkkk shocking.gif more than -100C!! the most i can dare is a single phase system.. temp around -25C~-30C.. sweat.gif .. even Fugger's dual stage cascade scares the sh@t out of me (-100C!!).. sigh.. i wish bulkhy can come out of retirement and help me out on this one sweat.gif , neway this is after all about D.I... a little bit off topic ere..so arj wanna start a sub zero club? Anything that can cool below freezing point can discuss and shared with all thumbup.gif LYN's own Xtreme Cooling!!! yeah thumbup.gif

ON TOPIC: CO2 is poisoneous if the concentration level reaches 5%, symptoms of CO2 poisoning after prolong exposure to a highly concentrated CO2 environment are:

1. Drowsiness
2. Vomitting
3. Discoloration of lips & fingertips
4. Morning sickness (mebbe i've got mixed up with this one, is it pregnancy or poisoning biggrin.gif )

Remedy, rest in a good ventilated room for 12~16 hrs taking plenty of fluids. If symptoms still exist, go find a bomoh.

A block of around 250g can last about an hour if you just leave it alone outside the icebox. You can bench for around 7-8 hours with 10kg of DI biggrin.gif

1st stage phase change with R22 gas normally can hit around -40C to -50C. Well, it also depends on gas that is being used. And depends on the compressor too. Bulkhy's xillixx able to drop around -47C. Lotsa things need to be done to get a very good phase change systems. Need able to handle load the most efficient. Anyway, a triple stage would cost triple arms and legs. R507, R404 are hell expensive. Expect more than RM500. Bulkhy used to have a plan on building cascade. But he has better things to do, his career. Btw, I'm sure Bulkhy willing to help you out dude. Good luck! thumbup.gif

Still, for short bench. DI and LN2 is the best. Since Winnie/Venice has bugs on subzero temp, DI is the best. So arj, you have hit your wall or you need more DI? wink.gif

Note on LN2: Please be extremely careful if you do LN2 experiments. A friend of mine who works for MOX told me one incident with their client. They spilt LN2 on the road but didn't clean it up. A dog came along and licked the LN2. Dog didn't realize what happened until a short while...and then its tongue just broke off and the dog squealed like there was no tommorrow.

Guys...LN2 accidents can happen to us too...and it is NOT funny. You will be utterly horrified for life if you lose your limbs or even part of it...just because you wanted to bench using LN2...

Ouch! Pity the dog....

As I said before, I won't be benching with LN2 anytime soon due to the huge risks involved. Having said that, if you completely understand the process and take proper precautions, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't do it.

For those wanna know more bout what arj is actually doing, this would be a good start

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=gethowto&howtoID=59

To summarize the contents:
1. Background of DI, what is it? why use it?
2. A little bit info bout the container..
3. Insulation techniques, very similar to what arj did..
4. And the fun

Ever wonder how DI is manufactured..
http://www.dryiceinfo.com/mfn.htm

So, enjoy..
Maybe next time, we will see you doing DI benches..
It looks easy to setup, but believe me you will run into all sorts of problem..

Now since u all have read the above given links..
Here comes the quiz for today. laugh.gif Why they call it DI?

Btw, Amok you have my support..
Go for it dude, you have the skills..

Non prolonged contact with Dry Ice is okay...
It is not hazardous or fatal compare to Liqiud Nitrogen...
LN2 instantaneouss effect is very dangerous... sweat.gif

I had another DI run last night, this time with the FX-55 and got stuck at the 3Ghz mark again! I really don't know what the problem is and I've double checked everything. The contact is good, insulation is good, and I have enough vcore.....

Its not good to hear that arj, isnt it a possibility that the culprit was your memory controller. I have notice some forumers at XS lamenting their new FX-55 wouldnt go past some point jus because of that bug.

But no worry, your venice did well though...
Btw this DI test, run on DFI or MSI?

I used my NEO2 for both DI runs. I don't think the memory controller is the culprit because used high multipliers and low HTT.....

Hmm, I got a feeling the 'Clawhammer' CAA2C's would be able to clock higher than what the FX-55 can with sub-zero cooling. That would be an interesting test I believe smile.gif

-------------------------OFF TOPIC---------------------
I think it's actually cheaper for Westerner to dwelve into crazy overclocking and modding stuff. In general I think it's much more affordable to get parts and hardware overseas as standard of living is high. If I was living in Msia now earning RM I can only dream of building a A64 and whatmore SLI rig smile.gif

This is what I think: For a Malaysian, a simple, tasty and filling meal will at most cost roughly RM10 a meal including a drink. Let's say to purchase some OCZ value VX ram locally will set you back about RM600 (just a rough currency conversion).

In Australia, a more than filling good quality meal with a drink will also set you back AUD10 on average. However, for me to purchase that similar OCZ ram is AUD170 here! In other words, I would have to save money much much longer before I can get to purchase those OCZ sticks if I were living in Malaysia and earning in RM smile.gif

Food is cheap and standard of living is low in Malaysia. Factoring out currency exchange, there's a huge gap compared to Australia. If i'm not wrong, Sydney, Australia is ranked the 3rd highest standard of living in the world.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Back on topic, i'm eagerly awaiting some results from arj. He's gonna be my main contender for the 3DMark Hall of Fame smile.gif. This is gonna be interesting thumbup.gif

PCcrazy, yeap I couldn't agree more. I myself have earned at least 2k AUD doing several days worth of design work. Skilled workforce get paid good money here mate laugh.gif

I'm currently waiting for the Maze4 SLI blocks to arrive in Australia. Suppliers told me it should be here by the end of the month. Don't know how accurate is that though.

arj, what blocks did you order? Did you get the NV6800 or the Maze4's too? I think the Maze4's would perform better with higher flowrates and cooling efficiency. The NV6800's seem to be quite restrictive unless you run a separate loop with its own pump. Care to update us on what your upcoming SLI cooling system is gonna be like? smile.gif

I ordered the Maze4 GPU, wanted to get the NV6800 but decided not to because quite a number of it's users reported problems when using it. As for the watercooling system, I have a Black Ice Extreme 2 radiator MCP650/Eheim 1250 pump and a DD TDX. I might run the GPU blocks and the CPU blocks in one loop or two separate loops if the temp goes up too high.

Hehe if I had the hardware, i'd go two loops without thinking twice. The 6800GT/Ultra's produce crazy amounts of heat. With stock cooler GPU2 is idling at 70C now in an open rig. GPU1 cooled with the Zalman copper cooler is idling at around 49C now.

Btw arj, where did you order your Maze4 blocks from? I might just order it straight from DD as the prices in Australia are expected to be even more expensive compared to DD's including shipping.

I have enough parts for two loops but two radiators on my table is gonna look really messy shakehead.gif

I got the blocks from dangerden.com, shipping is US$35. According to the tracking info, it will arrive on the 30th thumbup.gif

Hehe you should've ordered the BIX3 and perhaps the new Laing pump too then tongue.gif

I think i'll order direct from DD. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long before my water cooled SLI rig is up and running. When did you order your parts? $35US is quite expensive for something which takes more than 5 days?

On Monday or Tuesday. It's being shipped using FedEx. A 3-4 days shipment would cost US$50.

some funny thoughts to share..

*
I think can use potassium hydroxide to absorb CO2

Perhaps its time to try playing with some DI and wrap it all around my radiator to cool the water loop smile.gif. Only thing i'd hate to deal with is condensation after the session is over.

OMG.. you too? this is really great thumbup.gif thumbup.gif , DI'ing you rad will result in a chilled water cooling sys, thus wheter you like it or not, you must do the insulation for you lines, socket + block + mobo and stuff.. in another word it's better if you do a direct die DI cooling... neway.. cool halfway case mod thumbup.gif

Would be a bit of a bugger to make sure it doesn't mess with the other components as the thing cause condensation of water vapor within the vicinity of the radiator. I've always wondered the possibillity of using instead the portable air cond some forumers arre using but instead modify it a bit so that a piping be routed to a shroud housing the radiator. Then cold air can be directly be flowing into the radiator. Just a thought.

Considering my water cooling loop will include the CPU and 2 GPU blocks, the risks involved due to condensation is too high. I wonder how low the temps will drop with DI by wrapping the rad with it though. If it doesn't drop too low then I guess there is no need for it. Or if condensation starts to appear, I could shut the system immediately so the water will be harmless tongue.gif

nah insulating was easy lol it's getting the mount right and the amount of acetone that was harder

but for a first time it is pretty good smile.gif

got the container for about 160AUD which is about 470ringgit

eyeing at the extreme mousepots now.. those will hold the temps very well for 32M benching smile.gif

Yeah he should really look at those guys with ceramic LN2 canisters and crazy cupboard size cascades in xtremesystems forums. lol

Malaysia is actually not as advance in terms of hardcore overclocking compared to the people in xtremesystems and many part of Europe.

Afraid what la! doh.gif

Not like the ice cream man will eat you up. Just ask him for one piece which you see you want, then offer to pay like RM10 - RM20 for it. Most of the time, unless he say he is running low on dry ice, he will definitely sell it to you to make a nice couple of bucks.

That one, you better buy. Unless you have access to heavy machinery to hollow out a block of copper. I can ask for the price of Chilly1 dry ice containers if you want.

Y not use Stainless Steel. U can custom order 1 from performance car exhaust shops. THey can make the tube out of stainless steel piping n the CPU block from a metal plate too. I know SS is not as good as copper for sure but then it's blardy cold anyway, no harm in losing sum by using SS right? Any1 tried this b4? It'll b really cheap making 1 out of SS.

im not sure whether stainless steel can do the job.
the conductivity of the metal compared to copper and aluminium is definately not as good.
not to mention the wall of it might be just too thin ><

Total cost RM2xx... It's just a sketch and quick constructed container, but materials seems okay. Weight < 2KGs with hold-down slightly over 400grams, length 200mm. We'll have to test it very soon smile.gif

Actually the cylinderic part of the pot has been lapped before by our engineer friend cause its too rough. Only left the bottom part original. I haven't lapped it yet so looks natural.

Anyway, me and tAmp0i would have to delay the dry ice testing. Firstly, we have to find a way to get dielectric grease, as intially getting from KL, but KLIA rejected the parcel cause its chemical stuffs. Secondly, dry ice here is super expensive, RM19 per KG, and MOQ 10KG, which really make us think twice before doing some testing stage.

We see how it goes and will try to test it out as soon as possible.

why bother with dielectric grease. just use few ply of tissue and armaflex arround socket. i can bench with cascade for whole night with that setup. just make sure your insulation air tight.
