Since yesterday, I've been fooling around with some dry ice (DI) and a pair of chilly1 DI containers. Here are some pictures and screenshot of what happened biggrin.gif

The key to a successful sub-zero cooling is the insulation so I started by coating the back of the motherboard around the processor socket with some liquid electrical tape.

The same thing was also done to the front and back of the graphics card

Next I applied some foam insulation tape on both the front and back of the motherboard and graphics card.

After all the work insulating the graphics card, there was some problem with the mountings. Due to the rapid dwindling of my DI supply, I decided not to waste anymore time fixing it and went ahead benching with DI only on the processor.

By the way.. WOOOWWWW man 3GHz !!!!  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif  congrats, notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

O.T.: now i've got the chill to take a crap in the toilet bowl biggrin.gif
*
I was rushing just now because there's only a few block of DI left, forgot to stick one of the thermocouple on the base of the DI container doh.gif

The bug is still there but you don't have to worry about it unless you have a tripple cascade.

having fun i see biggrin.gif

so when ru trying on the dfi and some xtreme ln2? wink.gif
also...the liquid electrical tape (red goo) can peel off/remove once ur done?
*
Kinda lazy to take out the DFI from the case, clean up the dielectric grease and them put it back in the case tongue.gif

No LN2 for me, too risky sweat.gif

LN2 not only dangerous to u but it kills the proc and mobo efficiently also..
Arj if im not mistaken, DI wouldnt be enough to cause ice to occur all over the mobo..So with proper insulation like master arj just shown us here..Ur hardware is quite safe..

Haiya i got slow streamyx connection today, some pics dont show up..
Im dissapointed..

Btw, congrats 3.2Ghz is just awesome..
Lookin at those step by step pics, it motivates me to put my winnie under that DI..

I know winnie had subzero bug, but u might never know..

Hmm but those containers, How much u got them for..
and all those stuff such as electrical tape can be obtained from normal hardware shop?
*
Both of the containers costs more than the processor sweat.gif

Yeah, they all can be found at good hardware store like Ace Hardware.

Tripple? woaaa... we're talking more than -30C here..., well than i guess the bug is partly sorted.

Three stage cascade can easily do -100. The cold bug is around -90 if I'm not mistaken sweat.gif

QUOTE(PCcrazy @ May 14 2005, 04:27 AM)
LN2, im not sure cos normally its not accesible to consumers..
Its just like all those acids and chemical stuffs..
If u happen to know somebody working at science lab, i think this might come handy..
Hmm, maybe i jus give my buddy a call and try asking if he could get his hands on LN2..

some funny thoughts to share..

Dry Ice Obligatory Warning
Madshrimps ©

Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and it can concentrate in low areas or in enclosed spaces (like a car or a room where dry ice is sublimating). Normal air is 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and only 0.035% Carbon Dioxide. If the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air rises above 5%, carbon dioxide can become toxic.

Arj, u sure u r not toxicated  laugh.gif
Any clue where did u get those big blocks of DI..
*
Damn.... I'm having a terrible hangover right now laugh.gif

I bought the dry ice for RM3.80 per kg from a place in Shah Alam, somewhere behind the aquatic center. I got their contacts from Baskin Robins biggrin.gif

erkkkkk  shocking.gif more than -100C!! the most i can dare is a single phase system.. temp around -25C~-30C..  sweat.gif .. even Fugger's dual stage cascade scares the sh@t out of me (-100C!!).. sigh.. i wish bulkhy can come out of retirement and help me out on this one sweat.gif , neway this is after all about D.I... a little bit off topic ere..so arj wanna start a sub zero club?  Anything that can cool below freezing point can discuss and shared with all thumbup.gif LYN's own Xtreme Cooling!!! yeah thumbup.gif

That's the three stage cascade thumbup.gif

how long does the dry ice last before it evaporates..
*
A block of around 250g can last about an hour if you just leave it alone outside the icebox. You can bench for around 7-8 hours with 10kg of DI biggrin.gif

Oh thank you for showing the link, sorry, the dual cascade that i meant wasn't fugger's, its this oneVR-Zone DIY Dual Cascade Vapour (they got help form Chill1 and the crew).. biggrin.gif .. yup i'm into diy'ing my own phase cooler (slowly.. very-very slowly biggrin.gif ).. wish me luck. sweat.gif

I got it for RM3.80 per kg.

Good luck on your project! thumbup.gif

Note on LN2: Please be extremely careful if you do LN2 experiments. A friend of mine who works for MOX told me one incident with their client. They spilt LN2 on the road but didn't clean it up. A dog came along and licked the LN2. Dog didn't realize what happened until a short while...and then its tongue just broke off and the dog squealed like there was no tommorrow.

Guys...LN2 accidents can happen to us too...and it is NOT funny. You will be utterly horrified for life if you lose your limbs or even part of it...just because you wanted to bench using LN2...
*
Ouch! Pity the dog....

As I said before, I won't be benching with LN2 anytime soon due to the huge risks involved. Having said that, if you completely understand the process and take proper precautions, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't do it.

Non prolonged contact with Dry Ice is okay...
It is not hazardous or fatal compare to Liqiud Nitrogen...
LN2 instantaneouss effect is very dangerous... sweat.gif

I got a feeling that DI round 2 is about time brows.gif
*

I had another DI run last night, this time with the FX-55 and got stuck at the 3Ghz mark again! I really don't know what the problem is and I've double checked everything. The contact is good, insulation is good, and I have enough vcore.....

Its not good to hear that arj, isnt it a possibility that the culprit was your memory controller. I have notice some forumers at XS lamenting their new FX-55 wouldnt go past some point jus because of that bug.

But no worry, your venice did well though...
Btw this DI test, run on DFI or MSI?
*
I used my NEO2 for both DI runs. I don't think the memory controller is the culprit because used high multipliers and low HTT.....

I ordered the Maze4 GPU, wanted to get the NV6800 but decided not to because quite a number of it's users reported problems when using it. As for the watercooling system, I have a Black Ice Extreme 2 radiator MCP650/Eheim 1250 pump and a DD TDX. I might run the GPU blocks and the CPU blocks in one loop or two separate loops if the temp goes up too high.

Hehe if I had the hardware, i'd go two loops without thinking twice. The 6800GT/Ultra's produce crazy amounts of heat. With stock cooler GPU2 is idling at 70C now in an open rig. GPU1 cooled with the Zalman copper cooler is idling at around 49C now.

Btw arj, where did you order your Maze4 blocks from? I might just order it straight from DD as the prices in Australia are expected to be even more expensive compared to DD's including shipping.
*
I have enough parts for two loops but two radiators on my table is gonna look really messy shakehead.gif

I got the blocks from dangerden.com, shipping is US$35. According to the tracking info, it will arrive on the 30th thumbup.gif

Hehe you should've ordered the BIX3 and perhaps the new Laing pump too then tongue.gif

I think i'll order direct from DD. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long before my water cooled SLI rig is up and running. When did you order your parts? $35US is quite expensive for something which takes more than 5 days?
*
On Monday or Tuesday. It's being shipped using FedEx. A 3-4 days shipment would cost US$50.

Wow, all that ice around the processor. Woudln't it soon condense and become water and damage the chip?

Unless you fire it up straight away, nothing will happen to it. I use water and soap to clean the dielectric grease from my processor after every DI run laugh.gif

Geez, I didn't know computer components were 'water friendly' like that tongue.gif. I guess it means if you don't short them they'll be fine?
*
Yup, as long as there's no electricity flowing through them when they're wet. Once they're completely dried, they should run just fine biggrin.gif

Actually DI is one of the cheapest forms of cooling, albeit a non-permanant one. My first DI container cost me RM60 and DI is RM3.80 per kg biggrin.gif
