If you are asking for salary which is lower a lot than your current salary, the employer will definitely rejoice, but they will ask you for the reason why you are asking for so little.
If you are asking for salary which is so much higher than your current salary, the employer will think again before hiring you.
It's the standard practice in most of the organizations that I know of.
