yeah.. using manual mode will give u more confidence.. i shoot with manual mode at my sis wed.. guess what? that was the first time i hold dslr... hehe.. d5000... although picts taken by me cant be considered as good.. but i learn a lot from that..

should be no problem. my friend used phottix battery grip and it is great! i am thinking of buying a battery grip myself but i need to borrow 1 from my friend 1st to have a real feel of it....
