not much threat from west ham from the start.. comfortable win but we could have done alot better in terms of closing down the goal difference with chelsea..

good game. liked how we kept it clean sheet. nothing much to complain here. maybe we should've score more but 3-0 was enough for me. dont think rooney would've scored in this game if it was not the penalty. nice to see him back by the way and finally got a goal after 5 months. also well done to our back four. they did what the could even when there was some shaky moments but they still kept it tight. looking foward to the next match againts everton which is an away match after the international matches. dont think its gonna be an easy game at everton but i hope united win the game and keep up the pressure againts the leaders and other close oppenents.

How is scoring a penalty = return of form? Until Rooney scores from open play, to me, he's still off-form

But his overall play has been very good this season so far. |

He won't score often. He won't directly assist, he mostly pump the ball forward to the flanks. I think Nani is betterNot bad..... 9 for Rooney and 3 for Scholes |

Now watch Wayne go
QUOTE Wayne Rooney got his goals tally off the mark against West Ham, simultaneously shushing his critics and starting what his team-mates expect will be a fruitful spell in front of goal for the Reds no.10. Considering his incredible scoring exploits last season, it’s surprising that Rooney has come in for negative press over a lean spell that has last 13 games, for some of which he was struggling with an injury. He’s only played in two league games this season and is still honing his fitness after missing pre-season. While there was no great concern about his wait to start scoring again from inside the Reds camp, his colleagues were still pleased he’s got his season tally up and running. Ryan Giggs, who won the penalty that Rooney converted against the Hammers, said: “It’s only the third game of the season, and he’s only played in two of them. But a goalscorer is a goalscorer and, especially with the season he had last year, he was keen to get off the mark. I’m sure he’ll start putting the ball away quite regularly now.” Nani’s salient assessment is that Rooney is a confidence player: “It was important he scored. He’s a player who needs goals. This goal will give him more confidence for the games coming up.” But Sir Alex says it’s his all-round game that he is focusing on, and more minutes under his belt that will inevitably lead to his best form. “Strikers want to score,” the boss said. “He took his penalty well. But it's his performance we should be talking about. He needs football, he needs games. That 90 minutes will do him no end of good. He'll get a couple of games for England now too, and that will help him for when he returns for some big games coming up.” http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6651719 ![]() ![]() Nani's perfect riposte QUOTE Nani will be far happier tonight after a Man of the Match, goalscoring display in a 3-0 win over West Ham than he was last Sunday evening after a missed penalty and a 2-2 draw at Fulham. The Portuguese winger was outstanding at Old Trafford and showed that he was unaffected by his missed spot-kick. “We always enjoy ourselves when we’re scoring,” Nani told MUTV. “We had a draw last week and we were focused on getting the win. We played some good stuff and we won, so we’re happy. We could have scored a couple more goals, but the result is good for us. “I was so excited to score my goal. I’ve missed a few opportunities so I was really hungry to get my goal. I was really happy to score and I want to continue to get goals to help the team. I want to push on this season, and I’ve been really looking forward to it. That’s why I’m working so hard.” The Reds now go on international duty, but Nani insists it was important that, after last weekend’s dropped points, United remained in touch with Chelsea. “Chelsea and the other teams are doing well, so we need to keep up with them,” the winger said. “We have to keep up with Chelsea. If they win, we have to win as well. We don’t want to lose any points, so that is why we are working hard to win every game.” http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6651712 Boss delight at team play QUOTE Sir Alex Ferguson said United’s 3-0 win over West Ham was littered with individual excellence, but crucially was characterised by team-play. United’s goalscorers Nani, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney, among others, can all be pleased with their personal contributions. But it was the performance as a collective had the manager waxing lyrical after the game. “It was a very good performance and our possession of the ball was good,” said the boss. “The team performance pleased me most. They all wanted the ball, they wanted to pass and move. It was a good, collective performance.” Nani was given the Man of the Match award by the host TV station, ESPN, and Sir Alex was delighted with the Portuguese winger’s performance on the right side of midfield. “It was a terrific goal from Nani, a marvellous goal,” the boss said. “It’s a problem for me because he prefers playing on the right, but [Antonio] Valencia’s form has been outstanding too. It gives us a bit of a problem.” Nani scored United’s second goal and made the third, a perfectly executed scissor-kick, for Dimitar Berbatov. “It was a really good goal from Berbatov as well,” added the boss. “He has got fantastic technique. He orchestrated a lot of our football today – Dimitar and Paul Scholes both did. That contribution doesn’t go unnoticed.” There was also a welcome return to the scoresheet for Rooney. He’d gone 13 games – for club and country – without scoring a goal. But Sir Alex was never overly concerned by those statistics, instead looking at hi striker’s overall contribution. “It was good Wayne got the goal, but his performance was the important thing for me,” he said. “He enjoyed his football and he was full of energy. That’s good because he’s not had a lot of football and he had a virus last week. But he trained all week and looked more like himself. “Overall we were pleased with the team performance,” the boss concluded. “We had so many near-openings on the edge of the box that could have come to something that it’s always good to get that first goal. That opens the door for you. We had to wait a while for the second goal, but we didn’t stop playing our football. We deserved to go in front and we deserved to win. It was a good performance.” http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6651680 Scholesy can be king at United until he's 40 » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnew...ed_until_hes_40 This post has been edited by alien2003: Aug 29 2010, 11:22 AM |
