Hi there...
First of all, I’m so sorry if I created an existing topic with same problem but I need some help and explanations regarding my problem from my fellow androiders. I'm having difficulties with my MMS setting. I tried to Google and read the available topic in this forum but it didn’t work for me.
QUOTE
OS: Android 2.1
Service Provider: CELCOM UOX (Prepaid)
Last week, I subscribed Celcom Weekly Broadband and the subscription ended few days ago. I never had any 3G or MMS setting in my phone. To commence with my problem, I called Celcom Careline last week and they gave me these 2 settings to me. (Situation: 1st day of Celcom Weekly Broadband)
Here's the setting:
QUOTE
CELCOM 3G SETTING
Name: celcom3g
apn: celcom3g
apn type: default

CELCOM 3G MMS SETTING
name: celcom3g mms
apn: celcom3g
mmsc: http://mms.celcom.net.my
mms proxy: 10.128.1.242
mms port: 8080
apn type: mms
So, in my APN settings, I have 2 settings which:
- Celcom 3G (got green round button)
- Celcom 3G MMS

When I tested it, I can browse the internet and the MMS works well. After the weekly broadband ended, from this thread: [Guide] Manual APN Setting gajahwhite told me that "once you already receive the MMS. You can delete the Celcom 3G APN setting. The other one (Celcom MMS APN setting) no need to delete."

My PROBLEMs are:

1) After I deleted the Celcom 3G APN, the mms won't work. My MMS sending and receiving failed. When I clicked the [download] button in messaging, it says "Currently cannot download ..."
In my APN setting, the Celcom 3G MMS doesn't have the green round button. If I change the APN type to be MMS, (the green round button appeared but still can't retrieve mms)

2) If I changed the APN type to default, my problem was, when I send the mms it seem I have to turn on my mobile network and it cost me money…but it works! I got Facebook widget on my home screen and it appears to update the status by itself and I can browse the Market and Facebook apps even though I didn’t have any Celcom 3G APN in my settings. rclxub.gif

I should not be able to surf Market and Facebook apps right? :blur: Suddenly without sending or receiving MMS, My prepaid credit from RM25 now has become 0.09cent. Sigh...is it because of the apps that are running in the background? (Some of the apps do have the privilege to access the Internet right)? BUT if I turn it off, MMS picture, be it in sending or receive seem not working. How to enable the MMS without “kredit kena telan”? sad.gif

To be able to received MMS or sending MMS, you need to create or enable the 3G APN. Otherwise, you can use WiFi to received the MMS. I've try before.

The reason i told u to delete the 3G APN setting because some application may need to synchronize or update the information. So that it need an internet in order to that.

So.. I suggest you to use Wifi if you don't want your credit "kena telan". Maybe your home got streamyx? and if it using the wifi modem, you can connect to it what.. smile.gif

Why you delete your APN in the 1st place?

Regarding the credit, unfortunately for you without any data plan, those widgets and background data will suck you dry.

Those stuff ate my officemate RM70 of her credit in less than a day.

My suggestion is, disable those widget and background data and set it to update manually. You then can update them when you are on Wi-Fi.

Yeah. I do have streamyX in kL and but now I'm at my hometown. So...no matter how what, I need to enable the 3G APN to received my MMS lar? laugh.gif

p/s: I might be misunderstood with explanation from this website: celcom-apn-setting-for-android-device

Just create one APN entry under the name of Celcom 3G MMS Setting then enter the required info for 3G MMS as described above. Don’t create 3G internet setting. Hopefully it works.

I'm misunderstood gajahwhite explanation. I thought that after I received the MMS, I can deleted the 3G APN and I can surely send and receive any MMS without the 3G APN setting. (just using the Celcom 3G MMS APN). doh.gif

Sorry for asking this, how to set the background data to update manually? It is in the Setting --> Account & Sync ---> Background data?

So by untick it, those widget and background data will not suck my credit right? Or do I need to delete all those widget at my homescreen and open all apps setting that can turn off the auto-update?

Yes basically that's how you off those background data. You can go a step further by using APNdroid: http://goo.gl/uKQj

The app is famous for disabling you APN (without deleting it). It's a ON/OFF switch of some sort.

So how's about the explanation from the website that I posted a few seconds ago? Is it him wrong or I'm the one AGAIN misunderstood the how-the-MMS-works-with-APN?

I just finished my buka puasa when i heard my name being summoned by master cleave tongue.gif

About the APN guide I posted in my blog, from my understanding it divides the data flow for internet & MMS. So if you were to enable MMS settings only, it should (theoretically) stop the unnecessary data which sucks the credit in your device.

I'm not an expert in this field, anyway as a recommendation I suggest u to enable 3G MMS setting or 2G MMS setting only & use Handcent to retrieve the MMS. If still the same, we'll figure out other way to combat this prob. smile.gif

thanks master cleave tongue.gif

@mfadzil
I tried to use only 2G MMS setting & use Handcent to send or retrieve the MMS but it didn't work. I need to enable the 3G APN to make it work.

@MyWifeCar
No luck for me.

So...the conclusion to send or retrieve MMS, is it necessary to have the 3G APN or not?

Based on gajahwhite and LEVIATHAN explanation, we do need the 3G APN.

Actually you can enable or disable the mobile data, by turning it on and off.

My sense UI got this button on home screen to do so for me....

Ok bro just now I've tested below MMS settings on my sister's HTC Wildfire (unrooted). She's on postpaid but w/out unlimited data plan, and having problem to send/retrieve MMS also.

Name : Celcom 2G MMS
APN : mms.celcom.net.my
MMSC : http://mms.celcom.net.my
MMS proxy : 10.128.1.242
MMS port : 8080
MCC : 502
MNC : 13
APN type : mms

**pls take note the MNC # is 13, not 19. I tested using 19 but somehow the settings cannot be saved.

And the result? It successfully send and retrieve MMS.
Tested 2 times send/receive MMS to my Nexus One no problem so far.

Maybe u can give it a try. Btw which phone u use bro?

Does she have the 3G APN enabled in her phone setting?
I'm using the old android generation G1 a.k.a HTC Dream blush.gif

Without unlimited data plan means that, if she browsed the internet, the data charges (10cent/10kb) will be on her bill right?

Basically, we need 3G APN settings in order to received/send MMS.

Well, you can do so by using Wifi. Make sure u have the MMS APN setting (3G APN setting no need).
Connect to Wifi connection, then go to your Inbox and download the MMS.

Nope, I just create the settings for 2G MMS only.

Yup bro, you got it right. It is pay-per-download, which will cost her a bomb and she'll get fainted when the monthly bill arrive tongue.gif

So to avoid this, 3g APN must NOT be set.

Currently I'm at my hometown so got no Wifi yet to test. The Wifi idea sounds great mate! Thanks! .. The problem that bothered me was "kredit kena telan". So I might try LEVIATHAN suggested which disabled those widget and background data and set it to update manually.

So I'm gonna keep my both Celcom 3G APN & Celcom 3G MMS in my phone setting after my celcom weekly broadband deadline (just subscribed it few days ago again) sweat.gif . So I'm gonna test it next week. Hopefully no more "kredit kena telan" notworthy.gif

Not necessary require the WAP setting, because your MMS proxy setting is pointing to WAP also. Which in the network architecture it should be that way...

bro..
I think your configuration setting's wrong. It should be this way.

CELCOM 3G SETTING (tick it @ round green button should be on)
Name: celcom3g
apn: celcom3g
apn type: default

CELCOM 3G MMS SETTING
name: celcom3g mms
apn: celcom3g
mmsc: http://mms.celcom.net.my
mms proxy: 10.128.1.242
mms port: 8080
apn type: mms

Other than that, leave it to the default value. You still having problem with MMS right? And try to delete the Celcom 3G WAP setting.
Btw, if you're in PREPAID, please do untick the background data. It is in the Setting --> Account & Sync ---> Background data

Hmm. Now you have Celcom 3G and Celcom 3G MMS setting right?
The green round button is applicable to Celcom 3G right?

Confusing :blur:

Thanks for those helped me out. Just tested yesterday with my MMS (my celcom broadband expired already). Hey! It works and my "kredit tak kena telan". It went smoothly. I just need to TURN OFF the background data & other account sync.

Thank you very much! rclxms.gif

My conclusion: We DO need the 3G APN to retrieve and send MMS. laugh.gif

make sure your setting is correct.. try follow the APN guide from my signature..

@MMS
if you afraid to turn ON the 3G APN, you can use "Wifi" while received/send the MMS..
it will connect to 3G just for send/received MMS.. smile.gif

if got no Wifi, just turn the 3G APN on, and turn off the data background & sync & other apps related to internet. smile.gif
