So I am applying to the UK for entry in 2015 with my 4A* predicted grades. Is there any better suggestions other than Cambridge, Imperial, Manchester, UCL and Durham for chemical engineering? Assume no financial constraints whatsoever.
*
Nope, I can't think of any other UK universities that is better than Cambridge and Imperial for Chemical Engineering. Not Oxford though, apparently their equipment is below par to Imperial's.

Are you sure about that? I consulted my placement centre and I was told it is allowed. I couldn't find anything that suggests international students are not allowed to defer entry.
*
Contact an admissions tutor for confirmation regarding the matter. Speaking for which, I do know of a person from Taylors who deferred her Cambridge offer, for chemical engineering if I may add, to the 2014 academic year.

For your information, predicted grades do matter and I believe that is the first thing the admission tutors will look at (in conjunction with a personal statement) when handing out interviews to applicants. Therefore, it is a good thing that you are predicted to achieve 4A*. biggrin.gif

In all honesty, it is best if you actually speak to those who have been through the process or Oxbridge offer holders to gain a better insight regarding the whole application shebang. In fact, you should probably start thinking about suitable Cambridge colleges for your application. Some (Trinity College, King's, Emmanuel) are more competitive than others so choose wisely!

I see. But doesn't that mean all I need to do is just ask them to issue CAS at a later date?
What I just did was choosing "2015 entry" instead of "2014 entry" in my UCAS. I have also indicated my plans for my gap year in my personal statement.
Celine?

I chose queens'. Relatively undersubscribed and one of the few that actively encourages gap years.  smile.gif  But I just want to complete the application as soon as possible so that I don't need to worry about it during exam.
*
Celine indeed! She is the person that you should be interacting with extensively!

Ah Queens'! Well, personally I think it is good that you chose a college situated in the city centre and only a mere 5-minute walk to your department!

Good luck! thumbup.gif

I think i decided to go to queensland instead..it will be really high risk if i decided to go to uk..as i am on medication..if in kl..if its rain suddenly and i was driving..i just go to the nearest shopping complex..or if im at home and its raining..i will just sleep then go to class..i love hot and sunny days..i hate air condition unless if its really hot..even in kl i wear sweater all the time..but queensland is kinda cold too but they at least have sun..i dont think uk suit me..unless for the shopping part..

A brilliant choice! English weather is horrible and given you circumstance, it might be difficult for you to cope with its vagaries.

Stick to a country with milder climate. smile.gif

So hard to find as none of the GiffGaff 'recruiters' want to ship internationally. In the end I paid for postage from this guy on LYN. He's mailing it from Singapore. https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2848507/all

Wow, you would actually pay to obtain a UK sim card before departure!

Doing the same thing, so that I could contact my folks when I land. It's just postage fees amyways.. No charge for the sim itself. Why, is it weird or something?  hmm.gif
*
You guys are a bunch of eager beavers! tongue.gif

As mentioned by limeuu, you can get them via vending machines at the airport. Still, no harm in having one before departure!

Well it's only RM 1 postage per SIM card!

Because the hotels/apartments my family booked require us to fill in a contact number. People advised against buying SIM cards from airport counters. And I just heard about these vending machines.
*
Ah I see! I suppose it is more convenient to have a UK number prior to departure, especially when it comes to your case.

Advised against buying SIM cards from airport counters? shocking.gif I bought mine from them vending machines but that was ages ago.

it is easy to measure head knowledge.....all tests and exams do this very well....

it is not so easy on the other hand, to measure how skillfully this knowledge is put to use....this includes soft skills like problem solving, communication, logic, etc....

other attributes, grossly lumped into a term call eq (emotional quotion) is even harder to measure....empathy, interpersonal relationship, team spirit, altruism, etc.....

while chinese have often scored very well in knowledge testing, they usually fare badly in the other aspects....a common example is when students from prc are given a complex math equation to solve.....they do very well....however, when the same equation is presented in a situational format, and they have to first condense the problem into that equation, they falter.....

the eventual success of a community, and country depends on all aspects...not just how well you do in factual exams....that is why although germany, the usa, etc trail east asia in such scores, they are still the world's powerhouses in industry, innovation, education, and sciences.....

*
You couldn't have said it any better. Hence, the UK shouldn't feel so bad about themselves really!

I cannot stress enough how important it is for exchange students to mix with the locals. There will be a huge temptation to congregate only with the other Malaysian Chinese/Malay students and spend 1-3 years only speaking English when you ask a question in class. If you do that you will miss out on a tremendous chance to expand your horizons, improve your English and build lasting contacts overseas. You've spent the last 20 years with Malaysians and you'll spend the next 50-60 years with them too, so branch out!

It might seem intimidating but just ask the person sitting next to you in a tutorial if they want to go for lunch and make the most of your time overseas.
*
Yes, but don't forget to socialise with your fellow Malaysian students as well! I have concentrated much on mixing with the locals and though I have successfully forged fantastic friendships with many locals, this decision of mine inadvertently led me to neglect my Malaysian peers. Of course, with good time management, one can commit to the two with ease but still, do take note of this. smile.gif

Hey guys
I wanna ask what do you usually do on your weekends in UK?
I'm not a clubber btw
Also is it hard for us Malaysians to be friends with the locals there?
Thanks in advance smile.gif
*
I study during the weekends, which was rather extreme and unnecessary given the low productivity on my part. laugh.gif

You do whatever you want really! Whereabouts in the UK are you going to for your studies? Look up on interesting places around your university area and visit them. Or, join a club which has weekly activities organised such as hiking, horse riding and etc. You have many options available. Of course, if all else fail, I suppose you could study in the library or something. thumbup.gif

I won't lie, it will be a challenge but one that is worth conquering! Try to look for common grounds when in the process of striking a friendship with the locals. Being in the same course as him or her is usually not good enough a reason so think of something along the lines of interests, personal belief, religion and etc.

However, bear in mind that not all locals are receptive towards mixing with foreigners like you and I! I have met my fair share of British people who is no doubt affable and polite but strives for nothing more apart from being a casual acquaintance. sweat.gif

Edit: British people love tea so maybe you could start from there? I can attest that this cultural depiction is absolutely correct.

Hey guys, I'm currently planning to finish my degree in the UK next year, but my parents are worried about the financial side of things, particularly accommodation. My first preference of university is City University London. Could you please advise me on the prices if you are familiar with the area?
Thanks in advance smile.gif
*
Well, I am not too familiar with Finsbury but I suspect the rent will amount to 150 GBP a week, possible more. Are you guaranteed student accommodation upon acceptance of an offer from the university?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I don't think so coz they're usually reserved for first year students, I think. I'm considering Warwick too.

Accommodation will be much cheaper at Warwick so rejoice! biggrin.gif

is it weird that i stay in my room whenever my college has a drinking event?
*
Why not just go for one and then decide whether you like it or not. If you are not permitted to drink, tell the others and they might just accommodate your needs! I stayed in my room quite a bit during my first few weeks in the UK and looking back, it was a silly thing to do. I ended up barely knowing anyone from my halls!
