https://giffgaff.com/orders/free-sim

I wanna order SIM card now (to minimize unnecessary hassles when I get there) but I'll only be at Bath on the 20th. So...when I reach there, an envelope from Giffgaff will be sitting there waiting for me? Will I be able to get my number now here in Malaysia?
*
I bought one giffgaff sim card here last year before I flew to UK. Can't remember if this is the same person who dealt with me but you can check out his thread and see whether you'd want it or not.

Just hand it in. The only thing they're looking for in your TB cert is your medical results. But if you want, you can clarify the mistake when you're applying for your visa and see if they would accept it. They should.

Btw, we Malaysians do not have to register for the police upon reaching the university right?

No need

We should totally do that biggrin.gif ! Maybe we can meet in London during the Christmas break?

On a side note, I am planning to reach my accommodation by taking the underground tube since my place is very near to a station. My concern is that would it be convenient to carry my luggage around while taking the tube? Cuz the walkways in the stations look really narrow and crowded. :<
*
I don't know about convenient but you'll see many people do that.

Hi guys! anyone here knows where to get cheap apartments or rooms at London city center? Im going to study there soon.. I've look my university accommodation and it seems like extremely expensive like 200GBP per week. Any idea where to look for cheaper and PCM rental?
And some stupid question, I saw there's many ads about twin sharing apartment 300GBP is it 300 per person? 2 means 600?
*
In London? It's most probably 300 per person. That's actually very very cheap for rent in London, so I doubt it's the actual price for it.

Hello guys, wanna ask you guys regarding chemical engineering in University of Leeds. Is it ok? I am currently applying for Uni of Leeds, Uni of Manchester, Uni of Nottingham, Uni of Birmingham and Imperial college london. ANy1 from any of these uni?? smile.gif
*
I'm actually from University of Leeds, but I study mechanical engineering so it's sort of hard for me to judge whether chemical engineering is good or not in Leeds.

Some things I do know:

1) Strictest attendance (Every class will require attendance, you'll get warning letters if you don't show up unless given valid reason) whereas mechanical engineering has none at all.

Ok so that's all I knew about the program so I asked some of my chemical engineering friends, and I'm quoting them;

1) Top outside London
2)Good lecturers (competent and know what they're talking about) and well planned programme
to train for real work
3) Good placement schemes
4) Materials lecturers are well established in industry and got a lot of written work also

I'm also the publicity director of MASSoc 2014/2015 so if you head towards

https://www.facebook.com/groups/743951978997328/?fref=ts

I can approve you, and you can ask anyone of the students currently studying chemical engineering on their thoughts about the overall course.

In terms of location, Leeds is a concentrated city, and city centre is only about 20 minutes walk from Uni. Taking a cab would be roughly 5 minutes and GBP3. Overall, living expenses are quiet cheap, I'm paying GBP75pppw without bills, with bills about GBP85-90 and living in 4 other guys in a 4 floor house.

Also, if you have any questions here, just shoot away! biggrin.gif

Hi. May i know that we create bank account when we arrive in UK or we can do it in malaysia  bank (eg HSBC)?
*
Knowing a few students who have opened up an account with HSBC, DON'T DO IT. Their services are slow and inconsistent. I suggest you open up with Barclays (took about a week to get everything sorted) and TT your money to that account. Bring some cash along to survive the first few weeks and everything should be relatively smooth.

Hi guys, I have questions related to banking.

Which bank do you use in the UK and what are your recommendation?

Is HSBC good? There are a few bad reviews online...

Could any one provide some advice on the most cost efficient way of transferring money from Malaysia to the UK?

How do I transfer large amount of money to UK (more than RM10000)? I need the money to pay my tuition fees.
*
For tuition payments, just TT to your university's bank account with your name/student id if you've gotten it. By far the easiest way. I use barclays, it's one of the easier ones to set up there, and their online banking/debit card usage, and mobile app (pingit and barclaysapp) is very useful.

be careful how you give wrong advices....the question is the most cost effective way, and then how to pay fees, in relatively large amount....

the cheapest way is the bank draft....buy in any msian bank for rm5....bring over, and bank into your uk account once set up....no other charges....tt will cost you about rm20 here, and they take another few quids (usually about 10-15) the other side....

for fees payment, the easiest way is actually to pay by credit card on line....if your uni has this facility...and most do....it's large sum, may be over your (parents) cc limit, so give a call to the bank to request for a temporary increase in limit to cover the payment...however, do note that the roe used may be worse than the usual tt rate...about 1% more...

alternatively if not urgent, the bank draft comes in use again, buy one in the name of the uni, and post it to them...

the pound has strengthen in recent months, so it going to hurt....but take consolation in the fact that it is not as bad as 2007 when it was 7.2....
*
The thing about TT is that depending on your bank, you can ask for a lower exchange rate, which will in effect reduce the the overall cost of transferring the money over. It's not wrong advice if you research thoroughly.

Usual flight from Malaysia to London ranges between RM2.6k- RM4.5k for a return trip depending on airline. A lot of people use Emirates and KLM.

hi, i heard that uk wants student to use original OS and softwares right? if some of my softwares are pirated then how? what about OS?
*
Don't worry about it too much. They won't check. FYI my university actually offer free Windows OS as well as other softwares used by students for their studies so check your university if they also offer the same.
