The Serie A battle for third place: The numerous permutations

With four sides battling it out for a place at Europe's top table, there are all sorts of scenarios available should two or more teams finish level on points.

The race for the Champions League qualifying round spot is heating up in Serie A, and any one of four sides battling for third place could yet triumph on the head-to-head rule.

After their 2-0 victory over Palermo last night, Napoli lead Inter, Udinese and Lazio by three points having played a game more than their rivals, but the pack can join them on 58 points if they win their round 36 matches tonight.

With head-to-head records taking precedence over goal difference in tie-break situations in Serie A, there are still scenarios which could see each side claim third spot if they finish level with one of their adversaries.

There are countless permutations, and the below table shows all of the possible scenarios relating to tied records come the end of the season.

Thanks to Lucio, 3rd place is lost. Stramacionni couldnt do anything about our slow defence, every team that play on the counter sure can get past our defenders and score. I'd blame Lucio for the lost, if not for his howler and letting Parma equalise, we could've played more balance instead of playing high up 1/3 of the pitch, which is like an invitation for counter-attack

At the moment, it looks really really bleak eventhough Napoli's losing, Lazio and Udinese are winning theirs.
Derby Della Madonnina tonight at 3 am live.
Stankovic is out for the this season with a surgery.
Zanetti could possibly be moved to the midfield.
Cordoba will have his final home game tonight before retirement. What a fantastic career it has been for him and Inter.

Win next 2 games + Udinese lose + Napoli draw/lose > UCL spot, win head-to-head to Udinese

the only possibility. Almost impossible, realistically our target is Europe League ticket. Please give the win for final home game of the season to the fans.

Added on May 7, 2012, 3:43 amDeja Vu, ok have we got back to 90's? lol

speechless

Perfect gift for Cordoba.

I think Napoli and Inter in the Europa League would do wonders for the coefficient. Its an easier route, and its what the germans been doing.

A bitter ending to a bitter season. Its quite a while since i update with news. Not much news though.

Lavezzi : Almost to near impossible we're gonna get him if PSG are. We dont have financial capabilities for him
Destro : A toss up between Juve and us. Why the f we sold him off in the first place. Typical Inter management. Blame the coaches as well.
Isla : Still not concrete news anout him.
Lucas : No concrete news either. Sao Paulo very adamant in selling.
Palacio : Again, our back up to players we dont have the financiality to buy. 10 million, 30 years old.

Loanees
Guarin : We have snatched him for 11 million + 1.5 million for the loan. Solid midfielder. The most positive of our transfers t the moment.
Poli: Sampdoria still playing for promotion. Inter wants a discount. Cheapo management.
Coutinho's back!

Edit : and it seems we have acquired the services of Palacio. Source sky.

I watched both of the matches, I'd say those were great, entertaining, a bit rough at certain times, and unlike most of the big club tour at Asia, Inter played almost all of their stars and it didn't look like they treated it like a friendly match, close to competitive match.

First match against league selection ended 0-3 thanks to wasteful league selection, both share almost equal chances. Star of this match I'd say Longo. Coutinho came in at second half and being the most stand out player but wasteful.

In second match against Indonesia, Coutinho was clearly the star, doing really good at number 10 role. Jonathan also had a good game. Such a relieve to have both of them back from loan, I just wish they won't be wasted again next season.

You should watch the full match if you have too much spare time biggrin.gif Inter official youtube channel provides the full match. Besides the play, the atmosphere was awesome, just like at Giuseppe Meazza, and Cordoba played his last game in Inter's shirt was decorated by his famous temper, gave an elbow, even though later he regretted it and gave his shirt to the player biggrin.gif

Sorry been inactive for quite a while, as has been inter on the transfer market it seems too.

Trofeo Tim cup was yesterday, and we unsurprisingly won. Its a real good feeling getting a one up against our two most fiercest rivals, but there also leaves a question on whether Moratti will splash any cash for a starting player.
Our midfield seems to be the the worst. With Cambiasso yesterday, we were just not cutting it. Same can be said for Guarin and Zanetti. In desperate need of a player like Vidal, hopefully.

While, all this while i have been cursing at the sheer stupidity of our management, i have forgotten much to update any about our recent signings or what not.

Firstly though, jerseys.
user posted image

While theres nothing much to draw out from the home, being its nike's safest jersey to design, the away one draws far the lot of criticism from the fans, ultimately too, from the Curva Nod. To me personally, there isnt much to complain about. Some speculate that the red is due to China's involvement in investing in Inter, building a stadium and what not. But between those two jerseys, i would definately go for home laugh.gif Although it has been reported that the away jersey has been selling more than the away.

From jerseys to transfers,
I've already reported about Palacio and Guarin. But the most surprising is that we have not trigger the clause for Andrea Poli. And its just one of the stupid management fail during this transfer season period, and lets hope Moratti goes for someone better or we will end up ruing our chance if Poli goes to somewhere i dare not say.
We also acquired a very good quality goalkeeper for the next 5 years in Samir Handanovic. Its a co-ownership with Udinese, for around the region of 12 million. And hence with that, the management is trying to force Julio Cesar to reduce his wages or selling him to other clubs. Again, this stupidity of the Inter management really needs to get their IQs checked. First, without selling a top goalkeeper who has high wages, and bear in mind we still have loads of other department that needs reinforcing of good players, we end up with Handanovic, whom is of course a great goalkeepr but one that which is unneeded at this moment of time. So we're basically stacking on areas which we're already good to go at and couldnt care-less about other areas which barely needs restructuring.

From there lets go to the one of the few things the management has got it right. Which is the acquisition of Matias Silvestre on loan from Palermo with an option to buy after the season ends. Another argentinian, another starter for Inter.

Which leaves us to the departure of Lucio, to Juventus. Cant say much although he in the 2 matches he played for them, he has 2 consecutive brain farts already, one leaving our best youngster a goal.

Forlan's contract has also been terminated. So there goes our Eto'o replacement after barely a year at Inter.
Pandev has gone to Napoli, which is a win-win situation for both teams.
Kucka has gone full ownership to Genoa, while we acquire full services of Longo, our striker from primavera.
Faraoni has gone to Udinese, co-owned, as part of our deal for Handonovic.

We've extended Chivu's contract for a further 2 years.
We've also acquire Ibrahima Mbaye, an 18 year old defender, who has impress me a little in the trofeo tim cup.
And last, Mudingayi from Bologna, a loan with a cheap option to buy later on. A good solid sub on if we are to be needing one i guess.

Well i guess theres still much more to the transfer season, and Inter has always been known to buy at the last minute, i really hope we could pull off someone like Sahin, only then, i think our trasnfers for this summers are good. We have the money, but it seems that Moratti would rather spend it on someone like Lucas or Handanovic which we are again unnecessary.

Then from there, lets go to our current players we have on our squad. And must be notable that the best showing i've seen by far in a pre-season game by a young upcoming player is of course Coutinho. I dare say thank god we bought him early on. Who knows he might be priced at 30 million if he was still in Brazil.
Sneijder is still having fun in Ibiza, while our current players in training now has been pretty solid, as we've started quite early in training compared to other teams.

Forza Inter.

Yeah I rate him highly, I thought his future will be at Inter. I read there were talks but agreement couldn't be reached beween 2 clubs, I don't know if there was already agreed fees to trigger the clause in agreement.

LOL very much agreed, what's the point of selling Cesar to save wages *frustratingly there are talks he'll be offloaded after contract terminated* when in the same time you need to spend 12 million to acquire new-less quality-keeper *not saying he isn't a good GK, he's good I admit it* quality improvement? unchecked. saving total financial burden? unchecked. biggrin.gif well I think we can expect Cesar and Maicon to leave soon seeing how things went through recently.

his performances for Juventus so far didn't give much pain after his departure, especially after his "Juventus' 30 Scudetti" statement. Besides new signings, we also got young CB Juan now, who's partnering with Thiago Silva so far brought Brazil to semi final.

QUOTE
Faraoni has gone to Udinese, co-owned, as part of our deal for Handonovic.

I wish Inter's culture to release young player to be star in the future with another club will stop.

Hajduk Split-Inter 0-3

Inter: 1 Handanovic; 42 Jonathan, 6 Silvestre, 26 Chivu (25 Samuel, 46), 55 Nagatomo; 4 Zanetti, 19 Cambiasso, 14 Guarin; 8 Palacio, 22 Milito (88 Livaja, 76), 10 Sneijder (7 Coutinho, 65).
Subs: 12 Castellazzi, 16 Mudingayi, 24 Benassi, 33 Mbaye.

Scorers: Snejder 18, Nagatomo 44, Coutinho 73.

Guarin, Sneijder, Coutinho surely will be vital to our progress this season, glad to have them in the team, especially Coutinho, he's been star since his performances in Indonesia, although it's not surprising, maybe the loan move was the right decision.

Good to know the thread up to date thanks to Alowie and Visionnary. HAvent been here for a while now.

We just lost 0-2 at home to Hajduk. That's not a good sign. But its better to lose now and show Moratti that we need more signing.

Center forward - we rely too much on Milito right now, Palacio is more of a second striker to me. Longo isnt ready yet. Pazzini for Quagriella?

Center back - I'd like to see Ranocchia and Juan at the back as our new starting partnership at the back, but realistically, they need more times playing together. Samuel is showing declining factor, Silvestre seems dodgy at times.

Midfield - why didnt we sign Poli?? The kid was good, and he even wanted to stay. Maybe financial factor? I dont know ... We need a defensive midfielder to cover for Cambiasso. Rumors we are looking at Fernando and De Jong

On a positive note, Coutinho has really improved a lot. Palacio isnt bad also, the two should be our starter alongside Milito.

Gasperini rues timing of Inter reign

QUOTE
Ex-Inter Milan coach Gian Piero Gasperini believes that poor timing was the reason behind his failed spell in charge of the Nerazzurri.

The 54-year-old tactician was handed the reins at the Giuseppe Meazza at the start of last season but was sacked after just five games, four of which ended in defeats.

Gasperini was succeeded by Italian veteran Claudio Ranieri, who failed to fare much better and was sacked after just eight months and was succeeded by youth team coach Andrea Stramaccioni, who has since been handed the job on a full-time basis.

Nonetheless, Gasperini believes he would have succeeded at the club if he had received the full backing of the board, as is currently the case with Stramaccioni.

"Is there any regret? I probably didn't arrive at the right time or with the credibility I deserved," he told Tuttosport.

"Inter are getting a competitive squad this year. They are signing key players, unlike last year when they were signing extras.

"Now I see [Giampaolo] Pazzini, one of the main sources of my unhappiness, out of the squad. I also see [Rodrigo] Palacio [has been signed]. I see a three-man defence, which is everywhere - Juventus, Napoli..."

The former Genoa boss also believes Inter would not have finished as low as sixth in Serie A last season if he had been left in charge all the way till the end of the campaign.

"I also see that Inter finished sixth in the end, and they tried to cover it up and fix it," he added. "I do not think that can be considered a reasonable finish.

"I do not think I would have done the same. I don't think I would have ended on 58 points."

Apart from Palacio, Inter have also signed goalkeeper Samir Handanovic from Udinese and Palermo defender Matias Silvestre on a season-long loan deal.

http://www.espnstar.com/football/serie-a/n...of-Inter-reign/
I share similar view with the bolded part, but four defeats in five games was enough too see an end to his career, really not sure he would have brought Inter better than 58 points if he's been in charge. Time for management (Branca) to has lesser role to decide player to buy, let it be manager's.

Inter's lack of transfer activity concerns Stramaccioni

QUOTE
The coach of the Milan club has admitted that his side still have a lot of work to do and revealed it's vital new players are signed ahead of next season

Andrea Stramaccioni has voiced his worries over Inter's lack of movement in the transfer market and is hopeful of additions before the current window closes.

The Nerazzurri have been beaten to the signings of both Ezequiel Lavezzi and Lucas Moura by Paris Saint-Germain this summer and according to the 36-year-old, his squad remains in need of reinforcements ahead of the start of the new Serie A season.

"I would be worried if by August 31 the players with the characteristics I am after have not arrived, but I’m not worried at this time," Stramaccioni told reporters.

"I get on with him [president Massimo Moratti] very well. For all the decisions I take the final responsibility. So far, no player has arrived without my welcome.

"I think it’s important that we focus on players who are useful and functional. The characteristics of the team go beyond a single name.

"I would see a problem if a player arrived who did not function in the way we play. What is important is that the players who do arrive are functional."

Inter face Hajduk Split in the third qualifying round of the Europa League on Thursday and despite holding a 3-0 advantage, Stramaccioni was adamant that there is still room for improvement.

"With my eyes I also saw things going wrong and I am trying to work on them. I defy anyone not to get things wrong on August 10, but for personality and our style, we are there.

"Now we must improve the things that went wrong. We are neither elated by the result nor concerned about the mistakes."

http://www.goal.com/en/news/10/italy/2012/...ns-stramaccioni
wondering players with which characteristics he's after especially in midfield department, the likes of De Jong, Capoue or Poli, Sahin hmm.gif so far I'm pleased with what has been done by Stramaccioni, especially with how the team play, I'd say it has been entertaining.

center-forward is the most worrying position, can't expect Milito to keep playing week in week out, big no no to Pazzo, Longo has been decent in pre season, if I'm allowed to dream, it'll be Hulk biggrin.gif good both to be right winger and scary as target man tongue.gif if no one come, might be a good chance for Longo/Livaja to step up, just found out Castaignos was already signed by Twente.

Ranocchia and Juan are great future, but I think Strama won't play both together for now. Failure to sign Poli was the most devastating thing in this transfer window, now it's rumoured that Juventus is after him but Sampdoria isn't letting him go cheaply. Besides De Jong and Fernando, we were linked with Paulinho, but the rumour seems disappear lately, Sahin is the hottest property around, but can't really expect Inter could secure his signing.

Regarding to last match, the 0-2 loss was shocking since we've beaten them almost at all over the stats, shoots, ball possession (62%) etc, contrary to the first leg where we had lesser shoots on target and only 40% ball possession. Maybe with current players and pace of the likes of Naga, Coutinho etc, counter-attacking style instead of controlling the ball possession suits the team better

my pick so far

Handanovic

Zanetti - Juan - Chivu - Nagatomo

Cambiasso - Guarin
Palacio - Sneijder - Coutinho

Milito

squad rotation players:
Samuel, Ranocchia, Jonathan, Stankovic, Alvarez, Obi, Longo

Good deal imo... with all due respect to Pazzini, he is a good target man but not as good as Milito, and he will always start on the bench as he can never play alongside him. The deal is a win-win situoation I would say, as we get a support striker who can play alongside Milito, and Milan got their Ibra replacement (sort of...)

Cassano is an Interista, supported the club since his child and went a few times to the Meazza tu support the team, so its about time I'd say smile.gif

Gargano is also coming...

lol, getting Cassano + €7 million in swap for Pazzo, didn't quite believe it went on process when I read about it few days ago. I'd say it was the best acquisition by Moratti on this transfer window. I hope Pazzo won't turn out to be much better at Milan though and Cassano will continue his good form at last Euro.

anyway,

Longo going to Espanyol for loan.
