Probably because those parts at the back of the phone are mainly made of stainless steel rather than plastic and you are feeling the heat because of that.
I also had the same problem with my Nokia E71 last time. I think that should be OK.
Probably you can off your 3G and then use your phone because I realise that the phone gets more hot when it is running on 3G mode.
at that touch screen freeze drama happen, i was making a call, i cant even hang up the call, need to ask the other side hang up...WTH
oh...My 3G is ALWAYS OFF

Well i got one more weird problem, sometimes when typing landscape mode the then if rotate to potrait, the screen turn and then blackout. wont appear anything or better still, automatically exit the SMS app. Damn irritating man. To counter this have to type on 1 position only. Lol.
Well if it runs on normal Edge also it tends to get overheated quite quickly, the E71 i used i dont experience that much of a heatness through the phone though kinda like it. Nice to feel and can talk for quite long but the C7 really can feel the differences.

Owh. The E71's heat was already too much for me. If this is worse than E71, then it is dangerous. Hopefully it doesn't go "KABOOM" while your are on a call.

the heat i been encounter...well, how to say this...is was soooo hot that i dont have to touch the phone to feel the heat, my finger is 10mm away from the phone, but i already can feel the heat...that time i so sked the phone will "KABOOM", after force shut down, i put the phone far far away from where i sit...i even put something to cover the phone when letting it cold down
