If your HDTV is 1080p COMPATIBLE, it will just scale the source to your native panel resolution (1024*768 or 1280*720 or 1388*768). If it is not 1080p compatible, worst thing that can happen is it will show NO SIGNAL or source not compatible type of message on the display.
