QUOTE United fans wonder if Sir Alex Ferguson has signed a £7.4m dud in Bebe By Ian Ladyman Last updated at 10:02 PM on 26th August 2010 Bebe Hair-raiser: The jury is out on Bebe, Sir Alex Ferguson's research into potential transfers can be impressive. Before a Champions League semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002, the Manchester United manager spoke in detail about Michael Ballack's goalscoring record. He knew about his tackle count, too. This was not just because he was about to face the Germany midfielder in an important game but also because he was thinking of signing him. No wonder, then, that eyebrows have been raised this month by Ferguson's decision to pay £7.4million for a 20-year-old he has never seen play. The arrival of Portugal Under 19 forward Bebe was perhaps the most surprising story of the summer. Few people outside his own country had heard of the 6ft 3in forward with the ready smile and the now-shorn dreadlocks. Now, reports from inside United suggest it could be a while until anybody finds out whether Ferguson has pulled off one of the signings of his career or wasted a few million quid and made himself look a little foolish in the process. As reported in Sportsmail on Wednesday, United reserve coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could find no place for Bebe in the 16-man squad he took to face Manchester City. By all accounts, Solskjaer didn't feel he was ready. Just this week in fact he was taken out of a training match because he was 'off the pace'. Few people involved in English football are better qualified to judge a forward than then man who won the 1999 Champions League final for United and - though he has been impressed with some of Bebe's finishing - the Norwegian's assessment of Bebe is that he needs some work. Nothing wrong with this, of course. Bebe has been in England only three weeks. But the transfer did cause some disquiet among United supporters when it was rushed through, especially when Ferguson admitted he had not even seen him on DVD. The dissenting voices will not be hushed until Bebe is seen scoring goals. Back in Portugal, there is less surprise at his move. Sir Alex Ferguson with new signings (left to right) Bebe, Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling Time will tell: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with new signings (left to right) Bebe, Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling Qualified observers presumed that Bebe - known at home as a raw, rough-edged talent - would some day be on his way to a big European club when he chose to join the successful and respected Gestifute agency of Jorges Mendes. 'Players from nowhere don't join a stable boasting people like Ronaldo, Nani, Carvalho and Mourinho if they are just going to stick around in the Portuguese leagues for ever,' noted one source in Portugal yesterday. United have good relations with Mendes and Gestifute. Ronaldo, Nani and the Brazilian Anderson all belong to that stable of players. At Old Trafford, though, the connection is dismissed as coincidental and chief executive David Gill said the hurried nature of the transfer owed merely to the sudden interest from other clubs, in particular Real Madrid. 'We have been following him but he only really came on to the scene recently,' said Gill. Bebe was playing in the Portuguese third division with Estrela da Amadora until the end of last season. Having signed for top-flight club Vitoria de Guimaraes at the start of the summer, the young prospect hadn't even kicked a ball for them when United decided to trigger a 9m euro release clause on August 11. BEBE'S BOTTOM LINE Name: Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, aka Bebe Birthplace: Agualva-Cacém, Portugal Age: 20 Height: 6ft 3in Position: Striker Previous clubs: Loures (amateur 2001-2008), Estrela da Amadora (2009-10; 26 games, 4 goals), Vitoria de Guimaraes (2010; 7 friendlies, 4 goals). The fact that Vitoria had inserted such a clause in the first place indicates that Bebe has some latent ability. Indeed, he had scored four goals in seven pre-season appearances before United stepped in. Estrela da Amadora coach Jorge Paixao said: 'He is the fruit of street football. Nowadays players are schooled in the clubs, but he has none of this. He's an old school player. He has that natural creativity, an irreverence, and that makes all the difference. 'He improvises very well, because he has the quality, and he has a set of characteristics that are difficult to find in a single footballer. 'He is tall, he is good in the air, he is technically gifted and he is very fast.' It is certainly a glowing testimony and United, who were pointed towards the player by former assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, will hope it's accurate. Maybe, though, it also hints at why Bebe has struggled to settle. Having grown up in a homeless shelter near Lisbon - his parents left him there when he was 10 - Bebe did indeed learn his football on the street and has never spent any time at a big club. The 20-year-old has no idea of the structure, the discipline and the intensity of life at a place like United. Perhaps it is no wonder he is finding it difficult to adjust and acclimatise. Just last year he was scoring 40 goals - yes, really - in six games for Portugal at the European Football Festival for the Disadvantaged. Now he is on the staff of a club that claims to be the biggest in the world. It has been quite a journey already. Sir Alex Ferguson will hope he has not paid over the odds for the ticket. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...l#ixzz0xn9OIAIu i think he really needs more time to settle down and build up his fitness |

stevebartram1 Boss on Bebe: "Fitness wise he's not up to our level, but ability wise he's excellent - a terrific finisher." Those journalists know nothing about what's happening. Added on August 27, 2010, 6:18 pm09:36 Boss hits back at 'disgusting, bitter' reports over Bebe. "He's in a programme of endurance work because he's not up to the fitness levels we're at. Ability wise he's excellent, a terrific finisher, it's just the fitness levels he needs to get to." 09:45 Very interesting to hear his thoughts on Bebe's criticism though. He launches a staunch defence of the player and hits back forcefully at the journalism behind this week's stories suggesting the youngster had failed to impress in his short time at Carrington. QUOTE(nazq @ Aug 27 2010, 06:20 PM) stevebartram1@JBCooler Not a sausage, sadly. Club sources indicate there's nothing to report. Could change, of course, but nothing yet. http://twitter.com/stevebartram1 Added on August 27, 2010, 6:26 pmBoss springs to Bebe's defence QUOTE Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed reports that new signing Bebe has failed to impress in his first few weeks as a United player, launching an impassioned defence of the 20-year-old at his pre-match press conference. This post has been edited by Wan: Aug 27 2010, 06:26 PMThe Portuguese's absence from the Reserves' midweek victory over Manchester City prompted a series of reports questioning his impact at United, but Sir Alex insists there are only issues with the player's fitness, not his ability. "Bebe is in a programme of doing endurance work, because his fitness levels aren’t near the levels we’re at," the manager said. "Other than that he’s done well. "He’s had a couple of attacks - I thought they were pretty vicious attacks - on why he wasn’t playing in the Reserve game. He was never going to be playing in the Reserve game on Tuesday. "I think those attacks came from a bit of vengeance from two journalists who are banned from here. They saw an opportunity to have a go at the club and I think it’s disgusting. The boy didn’t deserve that. He’s a young boy trying to make his way in football, they didn’t need to do that. I think it was a real bitter attack. "Ability-wise, he’s excellent. Terrific finisher, we’ve been very impressed with that, and it’s just the fitness levels he needs to get to, as opposed to our fitness levels." Sir Alex is comfortable to take his time with the versatile forward, who has enjoyed a meteroric rise to prominence since joining United, and insists there is no reason to hasten his playing involvement. "We’ve not done any serious work," said the manager. "We did some tests on him and there were one or two areas we need to work at, in terms of his fitness, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment. "So he’s combining the physical work he’s doing with the sports science people, and the football part. We’re treading a bit carefully with it." http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6651683 |

Our neighbour got a tough draw in Europa League as well. So far they have Juventus in Grp A.
http://en.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/draws/index.html Rio back in training QUOTE Despite being ruled out until the end of September last week, Rio Ferdinand has surprised everyone at Carrington by returning to training. A knee ligament injury, suffered in the build-up to the World Cup, was expected to keep Ferdinand sidelined for the next few weeks. But he has made siginificant strides forward in the last few days much to the delight of his manager. Rio Ferdinand’s trained this week, which is a big surprise to me," Sir Alex told his pre-West Ham press conference. "He’s made fantastic progress in the last week or so. "I must admit, he hadn’t done anything, football-wise, when I spoke last week. I think when he read what I said, it maybe gave him a kick. He came in, trained this week and he’s done fantastic, really good. "He’ll train with the Reserves today and won’t be involved tomorrow, of course, but we’ll just have to try and think when we can maybe get a game with him in the next two weeks. He’s that close. You have to be aware of knee ligament injuries, but at the moment everything’s been fine." The manager also confirmed Wayne Rooney's availability for Saturday's clash with West Ham, and voiced his admiration for the efforts and endeavours of Anderson, who is well down the road to recovery after cruciate knee ligament damage. "Anderson’s training with the first team, which is great," said Sir Alex. "He played a bit with the Reserves on Tuesday. That’s really good news. You’ve got to be aware that, although he’s played a part of the game on Tuesday , he’s been out for a long time and we have to monitor his progress carefully. But he’s keen – he trained on Wednesday, the day after the game, actually – which shows his enthusiasm he’s got." http://www.manutd.com/default.sps?pagegid=...&newsid=6651679 Gill - No more summer deals QUOTE Manchester United chief executive David Gill has ruled out the club making any more signings before the close of the transfer window. The Red Devils have brought in Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez, Marnick Vermijl and, most recently, striker Bebe this summer. Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted he is happy with his squad, and Gill has echoed the Scot's sentiments that the club feel they are well equipped for the new term. "Hopefully we've got the right numbers to compete on all fronts for the rest of the year," said Gill. "We've never bought older stars. We turn talented youngsters into top, top stars. We've done it with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Anderson and Nani. "We think Bebe will fit into that profile - so our policy hasn't changed. But if there's a player who Sir Alex Ferguson thinks would change things we would go with it." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6340816,00.html This post has been edited by alien2003: Aug 27 2010, 08:08 PM |

Believe it or not, I feel sorry for Liverpool to lose Mascherano in the manner that they have. No time to Liverpool to sign anyone and definitely wrecks their season.
