I won it and also got bronze medal.

After you've won it for the first time, they give you the option to continue or to quit the arcade.

It's better to continue because you keep your power ups, and your score. This is the best way to get your score higher to get the silver and gold medals.

Anyway continuing goes to hard mode starting with lv4, which is basically lv1 protos but harder.
Anyway for the entire game, this was my strategy.

Start off with 2 shields which also give you auto targetting missiles. Then get 3 purple beam lasers. This is your base.

After that you can upgrade your purple beam lasers somemore, and also collect more shields and blue bombs.

AVOID THE SIDE MISSILES !!! because it removes your purple laser advantage for bosses and hard units.

Does upgrading the beams give bonus damage? I didn't see any change.

It's better to continue because you keep your power ups, and your score. This is the best way to get your score higher to get the silver and gold medals.

Anyway continuing goes to hard mode starting with lv4, which is basically lv1 protos but harder. So basically it's a loop of protos, zerg and terran and level increases by 1 each time.
I surmise that to get gold medal you must do 3 loops which is 9 levels in total continuously.

Anyway i don't recommend switching special abilities all the time. Sticking to mine works for all 3 levels no problem.
However the following should be noted.

lv1 - you can do this with purple beams only as you must take down the protos carrier boss quickly. Auto seeking missiles help for farming points, although i suggest max 2 only. What i did was get 2 shields first, then get purple beams for everything else.
lv2 - auto seeking missiles is going to get you through this stage without dying. If you don't, you can be easily over whelmed. Make that your priority. Once done, then you can start trying to upgrade purple laser beams for the end boss fight and minion bosses. Pop a blue bomb carefully so you can avoid taking damage from the green lasers the zerg emit when they die. I don't recommend using the bomb while the small zergs are alive, i only use it after they are dead and just before the green beams hit me, so i can go invulnerable and maneuver through to a safe spot quickly.
lv3 - Same as lv 2. Use bomb to go invulnerable if you really need to. You can get easily swamped like lv2, but you don't need to worry about green beam fallout after they die like the zergs did. Instead, you need to worry about live fire as they are more frequent shooters when alive. Also beware the bombs that spray out fire in all directions. You should try to shoot those with purple beams as fast you can.

For the Terratron final boss, shoot it with purple laser beams. Dodge it's attack. If your in trouble, use a blue bomb to go invulnerable and keep attacking.
Basically don't die especially near to a boss fight as your going to need the special ability power ups if your going to win for boss fights.

Thanks for sharing your strategy Moogle. Will give it a try. What is the max upgrade for the purple laser beams?

wahhh actually hor, the game quite easy. i reached level 8 to die out of being swarmed for the most part.

the things attack ah, drones keep dying only cos very close proximity.

biggrin.gif

those who want to win, here's my formula other than being awake and keep alert.

level 1
get 2x side missile first (yellow). then get 2 drones (red). from this point onwards. try to get 2 plasma (pink). the plasma replaces the side missile. after this point, just keep collecting bombs (i have 17 bombs at level 8, the point of my demise. tongue.gif)

you can use the side missile all the way but plasma kills level bosses and those other guardian units MUCH faster. you could actually start off with the plasma weapon.

level boss is easy - just stay at the center and keep firing. when the boss attempts his power weapons, move to say the lower left side of the screen. once he starts firing, you move from 1 end to the other. it works anywhere on the screen but i suggest lower left to right (or right to left) beause there's more space, plus the shape of your ship. (yes yes, i play shoot'em ups!)

note that you need not rush from 1 end to the other. you could stay put, let the fella fire 2 - 3 rounds before shifting to the next clear area.

level 2
plasma works fine here but i find going side missiles are more useful because they really come in swarms. other configurations same. and yes, still keep collecting those bombs.

level boss seems tough for 1st time, i lost 3 ships on my 1st try. after that it's easy. just stay at the center. keep a watch on the tentacle, it's slow but it'll aim for you. just move about and distance yourself and you're fine. the boss' special attack is easy. just stay away from center and you're fine.

level 3
plasma works fine here but i find going side missiles are more useful because they really come in swarms. other configurations same. and yes, still keep collecting those bombs.

level boss is tough here but shouldn't be a problem if you have some missiles there. just keep shooting from the center. the 1st salvo the boss fires comes in streams. they're ok.

the next one would be a bunch of circular spam, pretty tough to avoid sometimes. along with it would be the beam from side to side, that one not hard to avoid. at a later point, he would launch spinning disc, that one moves all over the screen, tricky.

you could actually finish the boss even before he throws the disc. smile.gif how? use bomb! why'd ya think I highlighted the bomb collection!

--------------

USING BOMB - the bomb should be collected as often as you can. no point taking the power up you already have. just keep accumulating the bombs. if the situation looks really tight, BOMB! this applies to every scene, especially level 2 (all parts) and level 3 (some parts, and the boss).

my ending score at level 8 was about 428k or so. biggrin.gif have fun!

side missile all the way.

My score at level 8 is 480k

I believe so.
For me the 2nd mission is the most difficult, needs lots of bomb.

ehh, that's why we both die at level 8 lor. those zerg things are insane.

you bomb 1 time just blow up the scourge. then you have to bomb again to blow those green goo.

QUOTE(Moogle Stiltzkin @ Aug 3 2010, 12:35 PM)
But switching back and forth from side missiles to purple laser beam is a waste i think.

From my observation lv 1, 2 and 3 the auto seek missiles x 3 suffices to kill all the small fry. Just a matter of mashing the keys repeatedly to spam.

I got like 90% + confirmed creeps doing it this way.
Purple beam is important to have for mini and final bosses. Switching to them last minute before boss fight is very risky, not to mention you still need purple beams for mini bosses anyway.

Extra bombs would probably be much more useful then switching back and forth between side attacks and purple beams.
But then again you both had better results then me finshing at lv 8, whereas i got to 4. But i felt i lost concentration at 4 but i still feel my setup is more efficient, although should probably collect more bombs like you guys did.
yes, it is like that. later levels can't afford to switch. i go purple beam all the way.

for me, the 2 drones is a MUST but later levels, they die quite often due to the crazy amount of flak coming at us.

i like purple beam a lot because i don't like wasting time with level boss BUT about the beam, switching to level 1 beam is pointless. just realize that it's not as powerful as i thought.

Too bad huh, it is not far from another 'achievement'

Using bomb while they are alive causes more problems. I found that killing zerg without bombs, just using auto seeking missiles was better.

Yes, i am only using bomb when i really can not dodge the goo, not when they are all allive.
