Pretty much a stock Desire Sense with Froyo 2.2 + Busybox

I just got Maps [brut] installed with voice navigation  thumbup.gif

Really starting to envy those who can just root at will. I'm giving HTC till the end of Aug. No OTA by then, I shall root.
Nice pics btw, samurai1337 added u on flickr lol biggrin.gif

Just got word that Titanium Backup can back every setting, app, data, email, smses on you phone and apparently it can backup your mom too. Really kaaa?

If that's true, i'm gonna root the crap out of my desire tonight. Really cannot tahan already. HTC, i'm gonna hate you forever for delaying OTA in Asia and forcing me to root.

Got root last night. Running Leedroid 1.7b. Froyo 2.2 is Definitely faster and smoother. Simultaneous multiple downloads and installation used to slow the phone down like crazy but now it's smooth.

Titanium backup managed to restore everything but very tedious if you have many apps installed. You have to click on "install" to restore every single app. So if you have 50 apps, prepare to stand by your phone and click on "install" and "done" 50x biggrin.gif

The restored Swype was broken so I had to reinstall, worked fine after that.

Want to use Paul's ROM as it is highly rated but people are talking about waiting for "MCR" or "R7" whatever that means...

Not impressed with A2SD though. Free space = 92mb now after moving all apps that can be moved to SD to my 16gb. Not sure why the free space is so low.

I've done the ext3 partition for A2SD+ but I'm not sure if it is working as it should. How do I check on this?

Rooting is basically getting admin/superuser rights to your phone. You want to do this so that you can make changes like:
-Installing custom ROMs
-Update to Froyo
-etc.

Just a summary of what I did for those who are still unsure:

① Root your phone
Super simple steps as compiled by one of our forumer biggrin.gif :
http://bit.ly/aMsllx

②Back your data up
Titanium works only on rooted devices so pls root 1st
Tedious but I've used Titanium Backup.
If anyone has a better alternative, pls suggest
Download ⇒ http://matrixrewriter.com/android/files/TitaniumBackup.apk

③Partition your SD Card for A2SD+ (if required)
XDA Source: http://bit.ly/aDcIIu
Scroll down to "Partitioning your SD Card ready for A2SD+"

④Flash ROM
XDA Source: http://bit.ly/atQLUp
Scroll down to "How to flash ROM"

⑤Flash Radio (if required)
Source: http://bit.ly/9NUK8P

I think you should safely set 2hrs aside to finish all these steps, but it depends on your download speeds for all the ROM/Radio/apps/programs required for the steps above.

Btw, anyone on MODACO ROM? Do you have problem with the Weather widget? It cant seem to update after some time and displaying blank widget.
*

Flashed to R5 last night. Battery seems to last longer than Leedroid 1.7b but might just be a placebo effect. Need to use it for at least a few more days to determine if it's true.

Weather widget is working fine. Have you checked if your mobile network is configured? (set the APN etc.)

Now.. must find a way to remove those pesky system installed apps like amazon MP3 and Wavesecure etc..

Hmm, from what I've heard, you can upgrade, but you can't downgrade. Better go check with other Maxis Ctr or with other Maxis staff. Some of them can be really ignorant tongue.gif

Was searching high and low for a 16gb class 6 but was told that it's not out in the market sad.gif

Finally got adb (Android Debug Bridge) to work. Now to try removing those pesky apps through adb... heh heh

Guides I've referred to for those who are interested:

ADB for Noobs
Basic shell commands

Not that hard to understand if you have some DOS knowledge

My phone has been showing me "Low on space" notification the last 2 days. My phone is unrooted. I deleted about 4-5 apps, cleared browser and e-mail cache and history, etc. The stupid notification won't go away. I even got ATK (Advanced Task Killer) to kill all running apps. Anybody experiencing this problem?

Actually only happened after I d/loaded the new FB app and update.
*

From my experience, the "low on space" notification pops out only when you go below 13.5mb (or somewhere there) in your internal storage. Isn't a good thing because I realised that push gmail and many other web-based notifications + updates did not work after getting the warning. All updates and notifications worked only when I uninstalled more apps and got above the 13.5mb threshold, effectively removing the notification.

All the more reason for you to root now winnie smile.gif

Guys how do i move all my widgets on a homescreen to another homescreen?  Or change the 1st homescreen to 2nd homescreen?  Tired or setting up everything again when i wantto change the screen order.  I'm using launcher pro plus btw.
*

If you're on Modaco's Custom or Leedroid's ROM, they have this thing called "Rosie" which allows you to click-drag homescreen rearrange when pinch-zoomed out. Not sure if you could install Rosie on other Roms though..

My humble reviews of the few ROMs that I've flashed over the course of the week ever since I rooted. Opinions are purely my own hope I don't offend any of the current users of the following ROMs tongue.gif

Leedroid 1.7b
First ROM that I ever flashed. This was my first contact after rooting. Came with Market Enabler (access paid apps) and Ad Free (no more Ads!) which were a wow to me. I realised later that both can be downloaded through Market but this was a real good 1st-timer ROM to flash to for a new rooter like me. Really liked the speed it gave. I think my score was about 1223 or something, the fastest Quadrant Standard score I got out of all the ROMs I've tried. Everything else were very similar to the sense UI that I was accustomed to. Highly recommend Leedroid ROMs to the first time rooter/flasher.

Modaco r5
After reading so many rave reviews on MCRs (Modaco Custom ROM), I decided to flash my Desire with this ROM after about 2 happy days of running Leedroid 1.7b. Maybe because it was the free version (where i couldn't use online kitchen to customise what apps/features I want etc.) or maybe it was because I didn't understand/read more before flashing, I just found this ROM to be too bloated. Filled with irritating stuff like Amazon MP3 and some other apps. It was macam buying a Dell PC and booting up with all the irritating and useless bloatwares and features. I tried running terminal to delete useless widgets and APKs from the system but remnants of the widget still remained.
This would really be the most customisable and versatile ROM if you donated and have access to the kitchen. But based just on the free r5 that I downloaded from modaco, it really didn't work well for me.

Nextsense 4 - Battery Save Version
I kept Modaco r5 for about one day. I initially planned to flash it with something else after about few hours of use but was really tired so I kept it till the following day. Nextsense4 (Battery save edition) was the one I used next. I thought it was pretty ok and based on 1 day of use, I would say that it was really kind on the battery, prob extended my batt use by 15~20%. The downside of course would be the slower processor clock speed. Startup was really laggy. And I mean like, booting takes about 1~2min laggy. The colourful lines (google nexus one startup screen?) was pretty for sure but then the 2mins to bootup? I'm impatient to begin with so this was definitely a minus point for me. General navigation on the rom was also slightly laggy. Most users probably wouldn't feel it but as I've said I'm sensitive to speed and and impatient so even the slightest of lags will irritate me lol. If you're a speed freak, this ROM is not for you. For the general user, I think this would be a wonderful balance of performance and battery life. Quardrand standard score clocked at about 983 on this ROM. This was a good ROM too, might try the Nextsense 5 (Normal Version) in the near future.

Leedroid 1.8
Was looking to flash with some other ROMs when I saw the 1.8 update of Leedroid. Thought of the good times we had when it was still 1.7b. After browsing through all the other ROMs that are available, there wasn't one that really caught my attention, plus, I was tired from all the back-up, flashing and restores that I had go through in the past few days. I'll keep lurking around XDA and Modaco forums till something interesting pops out. Till then I stick with something that is stable, tried and tested heh heh. Last run of Quadrant standard got me 1183 pts.

To be continued... biggrin.gif

tl:dr version
Leedroid 1.7b - Good 1st-time ROM for beginners and root noobs smile.gif
Modaco r5 - I'm too cheapo and can't pay for kitchen so complaining that it is not suitable for for me cry.gif
Nextsense 4 - Battery Save Version - Very good balance of performance and battery life. But startup and slight lags too much for an impatient B**tard like me tongue.gif
Leedroid 1.8 - Flashed too many ROMs within 1 wk but still can't find one that I really like, so sticking to Leedroid for now biggrin.gif

Btw, after using Neophyte Nextsense 5.0 SB ROM for some time, I think it's great:

- Stable as usual, and not too bloated like other ROMs

- It's fast even for save battery version, quadrant score is 12XX, and performance drop not noticeable

- I like the stock Froyo lockscreen

- Better battery life - drops drastically lesser during standby (3-4% drop only if I leave it overnight), still drains while surfing web continuously (which is normal, don't expect magic here), but I think it drains 15%-20% lesser due to lower clockspeed.
*

Nice~ might try it out soon. Need to wait for my Titanium backup registration code first though biggrin.gif

-You need to install titanium backup again (get it from the market if the ROM you flashed doesn't come with it)
-Go to Settings -> Applications -> Enable "unknown sources" (✔)
-Run the titanium backup app
-Hit the menu button
-Select "Batch"
-Select "Run "Restore missing apps + all system data"
-Click on install/done for every app you restore
-Curse yourself for not getting the paid version (optional)
-???
-Profit!!! (restore done!)

Modaco runs in its own forum by paul n its not under xda.  N link as provided by KTYC.
About nextsense or leedroid.  I think u need to try them both actually cuz u'll never satisfied witg people opinions unless u feel it by urself.  I love nextsense cuz its stable,  fast n the 720p is nice.
*

Exactomundo. You can listen/read/gather feedback from everywhere but ultimately, it's whether you like it or not. Kinda like diamond hunting for an engagement/proposal ring haha, the diamond specs can be so-so on the certificate but if it looks good enough and you like it, it doesn't matter what anyone says anymore lol biggrin.gif

ends up eating up more batt IMO. Better to tweak your brightness levels down or enable data only when you need it. You can save much more juice like that than any "batt-save" apps out there

Install HTC Sync and just connect via USB cable. Everything should run automatically from there. If you want to connect to the internet from your PC using your phone's line, then just select "Internet sharing" on your phone (connected via USB of course)

I try this steps, but when come to step "Restore missing apps + all system data" the value is "0"
I think this is becoz I did ext3 partition and wipe everything in the SD card..but b4 this I did run a backup file and save to pc, and now transferred in my sd..how to restore using this backup file?
*

I'm not sure how you did the backup. Few possible scenarios here:
-Backup via Titanium did not complete
-Backup to PC was not complete (i.e. only backup a few selected files but missed the titanium backup file/folder?)

What I did when I 1st rooted and flashed a new ROM was to make backup on Titanium, copy ALL SDcard contents to PC as backup. Format SD card, create ext3 partition and copy ALL contents from PC back to SDcard. Running restore on Titanium after flashing went without a problem.
