1) Some chinese are Christian, thats why they have English name. (For example, like me)
2) Most of the Malay and Indian don't know how to pronounce our chinese name correctly, so instead of keep on being call the wrong name. Just put an English name.
3) Put English no need Government tax, no need register. So, why not?

Just curious that some Chinese fella do not have their name on their IC but purposely put a glamour name for themselves.

Sorry, there is no such thing.

QUOTE
These teachings are glaringly and fundamentally different to the Christian gospel:
•    There is no God in Buddhism. Christianity, however, presents a living, personal, holy and almighty God who created the world from nothingness (not into nothingness).
•    In Buddhism, the world and human self are nothing but an illusion; the ultimate reality is the absolute emptiness of the great void. Contrast this with the physical reality of Jesus Christ, mankind and God’s creation.
•    The Christian concept of sin, as a violation of God’s holy nature and laws, is non-existent in Buddhism; there is, therefore, no need of a Saviour. There is no final accountability to a holy God on the judgment Day. Karma, the cosmic Law of Cause and Effect, is the ultimate impersonal and merciless judge.
•    Self-effort, with guidance and help from certain priests and teachers, is the key to salvation. Jesus’ death on the Cross for our sins, providing the only means of reconciliation with God, is unnecessary and pointless to the Buddhist. There is no savior in Buddhism; the Buddha said he could not help anyone; he could only point the way.
•    Buddhist meditation aims to achieve release from suffering and the endless cycle of death and rebirth; according to Buddha, meditation is only ‘a raft with which one can reach the opposite shore: emptiness’. Christian meditation focuses on God and its aim is to achieve fullness and oneness with Christ, not emptiness without Christ.
•    Heaven is the Christian’s ultimate destiny; the Buddhist, however, aims for nirvana, a state of nothingness and emptiness. Nirvana is the state where there is neither being nor non-being. Hope, then, does not lie in God’s mercy, love and grace; it lies in non-existence.
Source

QUOTE
Most Buddhist schools teach reincarnation while the Bible teaches "It is appointed for each person to die once, and then comes the judgment" (Hebrews 9:7). Jesus taught His disciples to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength." Buddha taught to relinquish all desires. The Bible teaches that life is found in a relationship with God through Christ. Buddha taught life is about the emptying of the self. Buddhism teaches that man is basically good and the answer to mans problem is enlightenment. The Bible teaches that man is sinful and the answer to his problem is not within him but in a perfect savior who died for his sins, Jesus Christ. So at the foundational issues, the two systems are contradictory.

until i'm so BIG ... i mean i become adult jor ... none of the teacher can pronounce my name correctly ... see what I'd said ?? NONE ... All pronounce it by funny funny tone, why should i waste my time ??

So i put my name as Alexis for strangers, easier for them and me ... At least i know they're calling me ok ??

I guess they think it's easier for other people to call them and not worth the hassle to correct them. Or their parents gave it to them when it was the trend.

Anyway, having worked with lots of gwailo, I find that they usually make an effort to try to get your name right. There's no need to use an "English" name.

There's an ex-kelik of mine, her name is Tay Ray Choo. She change her name to Rachel Tay so that it would be easier for our mat saleh kelik to pronounce her name. And I got lots of cainis frens who got english names, and their not even christian. I dun see any problem with that

In my neighbourhood, there are a few families like that. Some of their kids are either Bhuddist or Christians. And from what i know there is one a muslim as well. Their parents are bhuddist and he is muslim. I think they can accept him because i see him go to mosque everyday. There is an Indian house nearby that is primarily Hindu religion, but one of his daughter is christian. Sure i know them. wink.gif

as for my case...

last time we discuss this before. Was asked why I got English name???

Actually the same content as what I mentioned. Since I always telling and sharing that truly happened.

That time I just coming out to work, then happened that I gonna meet some clients for meeting. So my boss asked me if i got any english name? He said as it's better for me to have one when me working outside. Thus, i got mine. Simple as that~ thumbup.gif

from my experience, its chinese school grad ah lian and ah beng who is fond of putting english name. in the opposite camp, the banana chinese with no english name won't bother for it and proud to use their chinese name. so it leaves you in a situation where lim ah kaw speaks english like an englishman while joe valentino tan can only go "ching chong ching chong" don't be surprised!

i had a hard time identifying my long lost ah beng/ah lian friends on facebook. i was going like "wtf, this guy calls himself desmond now! tak tau malu ke biggrin.gif"

This is true, when i first met someone and he/she told me their name without the english name. then i am sure i cant remember >< is just too hard unless is friends who meet up all the time

its funny why chinese ppl say other chinese name is hard to pronounce or remember LoL.

one person name consist of his/her parent or family name and his/her own name that might be given by their parents or grandparents. when they r expecting u to this world, they spent alot of time thinking of a name for u.

so when we address another person name, indirectly we r adressing his/her entiry family. so pls try to at least pronounce or remember it. to show respect.

also pls dont be a pushover and go use a english name bcos it will be easier to remember. Ching chong cheng is always more unique than michael, david or jason on any given day biggrin.gif

from my experience, its chinese school grad ah lian and ah beng who is fond of putting english name. in the opposite camp, the banana chinese with no english name won't bother for it and proud to use their chinese name. so it leaves you in a situation where lim ah kaw speaks english like an englishman while joe valentino tan can only go "ching chong ching chong" don't be surprised!

i had a hard time identifying my long lost ah beng/ah lian friends on facebook. i was going like "wtf, this guy calls himself desmond now! tak tau malu ke biggrin.gif"

btw desmond is a very popular abeng name biggrin.gif

In my opinion, they all have their own reason. But i prefer calling them by their real name, and their nickname as well (or whatever name any close family, relatives and friends use). Much friendlier n better.

All in all, be proud of ur name, because it is yours, and urs alone happy.gif

however i do hate people who choose stupid/bad name ie Kinky, petpet(this is used by a malay..), pus, strawberry, apple, rainbow, etc.

Flowers seems fine. Mawar. Rose. Mui Kwai. Seems to be fine across different cultures.

Fruits......err..I don't think Chinese names have those too. So Chinese using English fruit names is rather bizarre.
