I not chinis but can speak Hokkien, Canto, Mandarin, teochew..while understanding Hakka and Hockchiew, Tamil, Hindi (due to movies) so how? Besides English, malay, Thai, French and German....no need to characterise ppl as banana or coconut. Depends on ppl's upbringing..
I only butthurt with chink parents who speak poor english to their children, and this encourages them to speak lousy english when they grow up. |

When I was much younger, I couldn't speak decent mandarin. I used to converse in BM with my Chinese friends. I got quite a lot of stares from other Chinese people. I also got a bit of Chinese on Chinese hate.
I remember reading that that in Malaysia, Chinese and Indians have the propensity to segregate others who don't speak the same language as themselves even though they are all of the same race. Malay people don't have this issue as their language barrier is not enormous. As I've grown I studied and worked overseas and learnt to dealt with mostly minor forms of discrimination. I find that people of the same race who worked overseas tend to treat you as one of their own even though there's a language barrier. Perhaps working in a foreign land awakens our spirit of unity and made us realize how petty we had all been. |

Sucks being a Chindian - one side asks why you dunno Mandarin, the other side asks why you don't know Tamil.
