I knew a Chinese guy from Malacca who spoke no Chinese dialect or Mandarin, except for English and Bahasa.
Most Penang Chinese do not speak the Cantonese dialect, likewise KL Chinese usually do not understand the Hokkien dialect when they visit Penang Island, so they usually communicate in Mandarin, English or Bahasa to a Hokkien Chinese. If a Chinese is English educated, he may not be able to speak Mandarin at all. |
