I'm looking for some help with my RT-N16 router. My network is a little complicated so I'm going to give some background info.

Network Topology
  1. My network gateway to the internet is set at 192.168.1.1. It is an Aztech modem/router
  2. Debian server at Port 1 of Aztech router. Connection is on eth1
  3. Asus RT-N16 is to be set on Debian server eth0
  4. Debian server is to act as firewall + wireless network monitor using IP_tables and Wireshark
  5. IP range for Asus RT-N16 clients is a Class B range with a /29 subnet mask so that I may limit the number of wireless clients

Issues
  1. What mode should the Asus RT-N16 be set on (gateway, router, AP)?
  2. What should the IP address for the RT-N16 be? I understand that this is dependant on the mode selected in question 1
  3. Any ideas or hints (for example, do I really need to subnet the RT-N16 clients?)

Any help would be very much appreciated

you guys really IT loyal fans, willing spend so much for a router.

if one do frequent visit IT mall, one should be able to 'detect' 2 type of extremist customers - "oh, all in one modem/router rm100 expensive ya" and the other type just pick the most expensive stuff and straight pay at counter...hahaha

Its not that I purposely pick the most expensive. Its simply I pick the best that will fit my situation. In this case the Asus RT-N16 is 1 of the fastest routers I've had the pleasure of messing with. Even with QoS-ing the slowdown is minimal.

Err... ok la... I've never actually had the chance to play with Mikrotik hardware. Just used their routerOS on a spare desktop before. Thats why I said its the best I've played with tongue.gif Not the best of all.
