i'm curious as to the router TM provides. I have my own internal network currently and would rather rely on that one instead. I can't _just_ change the DIR-615 router itself? I still have to rely on it? Can't I just toss it and replace it w/ a new?

BTW, is there anyway that we can use the FTTH --> BTU and then after that, connect to our own router? The athena site says that you need to do the VLAN thingy?? Is the VLAN Thingy on the BTU unit or the DIR-615? (the BTW itself has 4 ports isn't it?)

the question is, do we really need the DIR-615 for the IPTV then? That part I'm still not clear. (actually, VLAN tagging is for what purpose? From my knowledge, it provides a sor-of private virtual lan for segmentating traffics from 1 router into 2 or more different lans where each lan can't see the other w/o some magic)

I have a linksys which I've flashed to dd-wrt, looks like can straight away replace?

rizvan : using DIR-615 just makes it that I have another power consuming device in the home. Right now, my current configuration is Modem -> Linux Box --> Eth to Switch --> PCs & Laptops.

The linux box is the 24-7 pc which handles my firewall. Don't really like/would prefer to have my own firewall rather than rely on the router which TM Provides.

Rizvan : Sorry for being vague. I honestly just don't quite trust the TM provided router and since I have my own linksys wrt54gS w/ dd-wrt, I thought it can be a direct replacement.

in any case, 8021q is something I've not had much research on since I've never had to use it. It is something to think about (Thanks)

The Linux box I have is running Centos and it's based on a intel Atom (945) chipset and currently runs ~40-70 watts (which is _still_ high to me. Am hoping to reduce it even further) and of course compared to the DIR-615 at 12.5watt as you mentions, it's really HIGH.

This box only has 1 PCI card and thus, I only have 2 NICs which is not so great unless I get a PCI riser card.

your pfsense is running off what hardware? I'm actually looking for a more cost-effective solution w/ low power consumption, runs linux/BSD and can hook up a hard drive for some BT downloads.

I managed to completely take away the TM's DIR615 from the network. My solution as follows:

BTU -> RB250GS @Port 5 -> STB IPTV
...........RB250GS @Port 4 -> My Old Router

The RB250GS is Mikrotik 5 Ports Gigabit Manage Switch. I get it from Singapore at USD39.95 + about USD17.00 postage from Singapore to KL. After receive it, you have to upgrade the firmware to version 1.2, every things look fine. I think this is one of the cheap solution to get a stable network with IPTV and Internet. :-)

Hi. Looks like quite a few ppl interested in this router and after reading all the posts,looks like this is indeed a good solution. Too bad it's only 5ports. I would like an 8 port which microtik does not offer.

I will call up this place tomorrow (monday) to find out ifbthey have stocks. If yes,I'll be getting it from them. Wonder if sim lim sells this thing as well?

Ok..ok.. It's a managed switch. 8 ports is cos I was hoping that it will take over the current job of my existing level1 8 port switch. (My home is all wired up)

What I was thinking is to replace the current switch, tag the iptv frames and just route it downstairs to the living room from the study room and the rest of the ports to the rest of the house pc and stuffs.

Btw, u guys are sure that the usage of dd-wrt will not be able to do the vlan tagging for iptv access ah? Just asking and making sure sice rizvanp mentions that it Willa use iptv once the dir-615 is flashed (just presumed that it also applicable to the rest of the routers which uses the dd-wrt firmware (I, on the wrt54gs)
