Hi Otobot,
Any small fish such as green neon tetra and pygmy rasbora are suitable companions of small shrimps.
I, myself, have cardinal tetra co-exist peacefully with green shrimps and yamato shrimps.

PS: Green neon tetra's max size is 1", cardinal tetra's is 2"

Lesson that i learn from this thread...."No fish is safe for shrimp" and its true. Yup..neon tetra and pygmy rasboras can live peacefully with adult shrimp but its will be a massacre for the babies tongue.gif . So if u are serious in keeping shrimp, i suggest u to setup a shrimp-only tank thumbup.gif..just my 2cent. Owh BTW, the only fish that i 100% recommend to be a safe tank mate for shrimp is.. the one n only...MR. OTTO rclxms.gif

I want to start this hobby, but i don know how to start. I am wondering what kind of filter i need to cater a small tank.
*
There is a lot of guide in internet on how to start a planted tank, u just need a google biggrin.gif . Describe small tank? If small tank like mine 1.7ft, i use eiheim 2211 + substrat pro + sponge + bacter ball for filter and filter media icon_rolleyes.gif

i heard that carbon is a must in the filter, why is that so??
*
For planted tank,I think using carbon in the filter is not suitable. Carbon removes many harmful elements from your aquarium, such as: copper, chlorine, dissolved proteins, and carbohydrates . Also, activated carbon can make your aquarium look so clear by removing discolorants. But the bad thing is, carbon also remove all the essential nutrients that the plant need in fertilizer.

So, how does one control the accumulation of unwanted colors or aromas from the aquarium? After all, any aquarium tends to build up a “yellow” color with time. The answer is regular water changes. With regular partial water change, we can maintain healthy aquarium environment without using carbon smile.gif .
