For those interested in LED recessed light, I have them installed at my house. Back last year, it cost me RM125 a piece including delivery from China. It is a 12W version with option for warm or day light. If you prefer to get from a local shop, you can purchase at Perfect Lighting at Uptown Damansara. it cost around RM180, but it may be cheaper this year.

Just as an example, my living hall is roughly around 16' x 16'. I have 4 sets of LED recessed light installed which translate into 4 x 12W = 48W which produce enough brightness to have a nice R&R. Spacing wise, I have them around 6' apart each other and 3'-4' from either side of the wall.

Before you go to shop, do not purchase those LED recessed light where the LED is visible on the recessed light. Get those that are frosted, so it does not look so obvious. Also, the newer version has a very slim profile less than 2 inches thick instead of those with huge heat sink.

Don't go for the type below if you want an aesthetic look and feel

Go for the type below instead. They have various sizes, round, square and rectangular. I chose the rectangular one instead.

Another thing is, if you notice the casing is white colour, so it is fits nicely on plaster ceiling where it looks seamless. However, do not it is alot more harder to remove the recessed down from the plaster ceiling compared to conventional down light where you only need to replace the bulb.

Added on March 13, 2012, 10:19 amFor those that want the conventional type, chose and down light casing with e27 and purchase those with e27 adapter. I believe a 3W bulb will set you back around RM35, but due to the lower wattage, more down light needs to be placed, perhaps 4' apart each other for maximum brightness. I also use these for my kitchen and toilet. The good thing about these type, if the bulb does burn out, just need to climb and unscrew and replace.

Thanks Alachan and dchk for sharing the info.

The one i saw in the lighting show is square type around 1'x1' and i think around 3cm thick.

Something as below

DCHK: What's the dimension of your LED panel? If you use the LED panel as your main source of lighting, do you use other lights in living room? like wall wash or task lightning?

My living room + dinner area is around 330 sq feet.

For my living hall, I have a cove lighting but I am using T5 light. Since the length is 16', I use x T5 4', but hardly use as I prefer LED. 1 piece of T5 4' is already 32W. So, you can make your calculation on electric consumption.

If you are referring to the LED recessed light, still going strong. For the LED e27 type, still going strong as well. But only thing is I am hardly at home, so I cannot compare with normal daily usage.

are they really bright enough? right now im using those CFL downlights, got two 18 watt bulb inside but very dim because of the frosted glass cover

More than enough. Just to give you a sample, when I was doing renovation, I asked my contractor to place 2 unit of LED recessed light with warm light in the master bedroom. See pic.

However, for my living hall, I installed 4 LED recessed light with day light but I don't have the actual picture.

May I know what is the ideal distance between downlights?
*
Normally, a rule of thumb if down light with 4" diameter is 4', while 6' is around 6'-8'. But it also depends on the wattage you use for the downlight. So, it is assume, if you use 4" you might use 11W-13W while 6" you will use 15W-18W.

If buying from US eBay, would it be cheaper?

The Alibaba look like wholesale for me. So I thaught they don't serve you if you want in small qty.

Anyway the CREE model only avaiable in US and not others country. The famous CR6 downlight is only have 120v. Now thinking how to modify it.

They do, you just need to post the right question.

Hi guys, I have a 24 feet X 15 feet living hall, total size is 360 sq ft.
I wanted to build a L Box surrounding the living hall which will form a shape of rectangle, the wiring man suggested to install total 16 downlights at the L Box area. My questions are:
1) Is 16 downlights too many for a 360sq ft living hall?
2) If the number of downlights is 16, should I use 4" or 6" downlights?
3) What wattage should I use for the bulb if there's 16 downlights? go for lower watt?

Please look at these pictures to get an rough idea of my wiring layout.

1) The spacing of the wiring from the side wall is too near. At least 3' away from the side wall.
2) If you ceiling height is no more than 15', 4" (more units) or 6" should be fine. If you want, and I presume you have plaster ceiling, just get them to lower it to 13' which will make a whole lot of difference. But if you want to feel of spaciousness then you will have to have a higher ceiling. Just remember, when it is time to change a fuse bulb, it will be a real hassle.
3) Your wire man is making a killing here as he is going to charge you for each light point.
4) Besides that, when he install the downlight, he will probably charge you another fee. The more downlight the more $$$.
5) You also need to spend more to purchase downlight and bulb
