QUOTE(malutapimau @ Aug 23 2010, 05:03 PM) pics? I have a full length Indian Kurta also like that. The sleeves are just ngam ngam. There can be movement 360. But very very hard to fold. In fact most Indian Kurta are like that. The only clothes with big sleeves in my wardrobe is an overcoat, baju melayu & chinese samfu.ive made the most fitted baju melayu this year------only slight excess cloth (even w/o 'kekek' = the extended traditional side seams) mine cut like dress shirt, tapered sleeves (very tapered i hardly able to roll them up to perform ablution), and matching tapered pants---- it feels weird when wearing it,,,makes me wonder will i be able to survive a whole day visiting relatives wearing this satin clothes?,,,,,,,,,,, Added on August 23, 2010, 8:05 pm QUOTE(nouruddines @ Aug 23 2010, 06:13 PM) Ya ka? Damn cool. At least you guys have something historical to look at every time u look inside your wardrobe. The only histoical artifact i have is dust and mould. Ok got the pictures of me wearing it taken this afternoon during lunch. Its not ironed yet hence the creases here and there.
Here is the basic top and pants. And the songkok for effect. ![]() Here is the shot with the sampin. ![]() Here is the back. ![]() Complimentary vanity shot. hehe ![]() And lebih-lebih shot. hahaha ![]() Here is the buttons from Mydin. Its somewhat orange brown color. Matching la. ![]() Its comfortable to wear surprisingly in the warm afternoon. No sticky feeling. Maybe because i'm indoors. I really like the color compared to my original idea of dark grey. So 1 more thing to do in my big book of to do is crossed out. Now just wait 2 more weeks to go visit friends or maybe go open house. |

This section is the journey. Its packed even last week.
After the covered bazaar, its the open area or Jln Masjid India. Damn a lot of people. ![]() This is BAK's shop during ramadan. The open space in front is covered and they put more stuff outside for people to see. The picture seems to show that the shop is not packed. But believe me, its packed. I could not even test my purchase! They employed some more part time staff. The girl that served me knew my name 1 month later. hahaha. Visual clue = Chinese. ![]() Some stalls have interesting interpretation of the Baju melayu. Like this checked number. There is this local artist wearing it in the photo. ![]() This one is also interesting. It has gradual stripes in the front. ![]() This stall is the only stall that sells pin stripe shirt material baju melayu. Very interesting. They are also the only stall to sell some variety of jubah with interesting motif and patterns. But the stall was busy and i do not want to disturb them. ![]() Almost all stalls look like this. I like colorful things. I wish i had every color there is. But i'll stick to my brown one for now. ![]() This one is inside Textile Museum near Merdeka Square. I have a lot of shots. But since we are at the topic of baju melayu, i decided to show this. People last time really are much more endowed than today aren't they? ![]() |

That is not dark grey. Its brown. Its very dark brown. Almost blend into the background wardrobe. I just need a tree to hug and no one will know where i am. hahaha The sampin was bought in one of the many sampin stalls at Jln TAR bazaar. Very easy to spot. They will have cardboards with prices written RM49 for 1 and RM50 for 2 or RM99 for 1 RM100 for 2. Even have kualiti mesin and kualiti tangan. Its machine made. Cannot expect much. BUT i already know how to spot a handmade one and a machine made one after visiting almost all the stalls there. The buttons are probably the best deal in the whole of the bazaar. I got them at Mydin. RM15 for 3 sets. 3 sets!!! . An almost similar one around the bazaar will cost RM10-15 each set. There is only 1 stall that sells only buttons and brooches there. The buttons are heavy with a nice clinking sound when they hit each other. The back of the button is engraved ITALY, but who cares? I have to put them from the back in first on the baju as the flower on the button is rather large. BAK made the button holes few CM bigger. I think they anticipated this. Oh yeah the songkok is from BMO Traditional and is cost RM23. It has a hard plastic sweatband compared to most that uses PVC. Surprisingly wears comfortably than some of those that i have tried at the bazaar. And the felt looks very durable and not as bushy as the regular ones. The lines are clean and sharp. nice classic cut BJ,,,,the color choice is a winner----but the sampin is missing something,,,,it lacks a contrasting pattern at the back (like usual sampin / sarung / batik)---
id ask for something special---- a handstitching sleeves hem + pants hem (im guessing the pants hem is also machined?) i should have ask for a classic cut BJ too this year,,,,too late |

Hand stiched.... i know what u mean. Its like the technique used to make suits. But its not necessary to me. If commissioned from a western style tailor, maybe can specify that. But i don't see the point since the sleeves and pants hem does not have stress points. Basically they just flap around. id ask for something special---- a handstitching sleeves hem + pants hem (im guessing the pants hem is also machined?) i should have ask for a classic cut BJ too this year,,,,too late I did not want a too contrasting color. Although i did bought another red/purple sampin together with this one. I bought this one because i find it possible match. I think it worked out well. If i get green, i could pass off as a plant. |

And finally here are the other stuff bought around Jln Masjid India & Jln TAR area too.
A songkok tinggi from one of the stalls in jln TAR bazaar. It cost RM33. Before that another stall tried to fish me for RM60. If you want to buy, buy from the lady that sells only songkok and nothing else. She says trend is 5 inches. I saw some stall fellas wearing higher than that. Its for my hat collection BTW. ![]() This one if from BMO Traditional. A shop in Wisma Yakin. Offered at RM23. The velvet is more smoother and seems more tough wearing than the usual one. The sweatband is made of hard plastic. But surprisingly it is pretty comfortable. This is the one used for my photos earlier. ![]() |

This one is from Mydin. Cost RM9.90 i think. Its not made with velvet, but some kind of polyester material. It is made by Wadimor from Indonesia. When i was selecting this, there was a lot of not well made ones. Fraying and such. This material is hard to work with as there is no friction to help during sewing. Also for my hat collection.
![]() This one is also from Mydin. Cost RM12.90 if i'm not mistaken. It was introduced 3 years ago actually. It is made by Wadimor from Indonesia. This also has high reject rates from factory. And this is the only embroidery that appealed to me. And looking at the picture i see a cows head there. ![]() This post has been edited by netmatrix: Aug 26 2010, 02:32 AM |

This are the button sets sold in Mydin. They are a bargain at RM15 for a set of 3. An almost similar ones selling at some stalls cost RM10-25 each pack. Each pack means only 1 set with only 5 buttons. So now u know why i say its a great find. Its actually clearance stock. The metal used is very good. It sounds like metal coins banging on each other. The ITALY word printed at the bottom is pretty tacky and somewhat downgrades a 5 star i want to give it.
![]() And lastly the Capal a traditional slippers to go with the outfit. I wear 44, but for this i got 46. Most shops charge RM45 for something like this. Some shops go up to RM150. There are difference to why those cost so much. Some has patterns on the band. And the higher heeled ones are more expensive. The one i have is a mix of leather footbed, PU sole and PU band. At RM35 i could not complain as it is probably the cheapest there. There was this store that sells very fancy beaded look ones. I did not ask the price. And also there is a store that sells a very attractive dark brown and black. But the shopkeeper isn't around when i was browsing there. Did not see the price too. ![]() |

Maybe in the evening ok la. But that time its even more packed with people. On the streets its packed. Inside Wisma Yakin is no different. Everyone is busy. Friday is a holiday in Selangor, so i think KL would be jammed because of working people and shoppers. QUOTE(malutapimau @ Aug 26 2010, 07:44 AM) you should go silencer,,,,there will be many hot ciks gone shopping this weekend,,,,, Hot makciks got la. Where got hot ciks? hahaha. The stall left only a few units and my size is the last one. But i think they will refresh the stocks daily. The stall is somewhere near behind GLOBE silk store. It only sells songkoks. I asked a few stall that sells mix of kopiah and songkok and some other stuff, they were asking high prices. One pakcik with a stall in front of Maybank asks for RM60. Some stalls also within the region of that price. I have a lot also is for collecting. Most wear, but i collect them to collect dust. ------- i want a 5" songkok too! netmatrix has more songkoks that me-----ive only a songkok that i use for the past 30years Anyway where is a pix of your songket turun temurun? hehehe. |

QUOTE(ashburn98 @ Aug 26 2010, 10:26 AM) Good question. I'm almost certain that it CAN be used as shirt buttons. But you need to have a shirt that is made with 2 buttonholes on both sides of the placket. Here is a sample of tuxedo buttons. See the similarities? If i were to dig more back into history, i'm sure the baju melayu buttons are somewhat an offspring of western wear. The original Teluk Belanga collar with brooch seems to be the original deal.![]() The guy that almost always be seen with such look is Rais Yatim. He almost always wear a band collared shirt with stud type baju melayu buttons. I think he has a lot of them cheap stud type buttons. Those type can be bought less than RM30 for a 100 sets. Its actually similar to Tuxedo buttons. I mean the real tuxedo shirt uses either pearl or black enamel studs, but you could use gold colored ones. The bigger sized ones like the one i bought can be used as cufflinks if you want to. But the fit would be very tight. ![]() |
