As of 21st June 2010

Julio Cesar

Maicon Puyol Ferdinand Evra

Messi Fletcher Xavi Ronaldo

Rooney Torres

*note on fletcher, he may play ugly, some fans hate him to the core. but he gets the job done in his role better then anyone out there. he wins ugly but he wins.

based on those that I have seen, might be a little biased though.

Peter Schmeichel

Cafu, Cannavaro, Nesta, Maldini/Carlos

C.Ronaldo, Zidane, Gerrard, Messi

R.Fowler/F.Torres, Luiz Ronaldo

Good question. Why not base your respective picks on players you've seen and not those you've only heard about from your dad or whoever? Let it be your opinion and not someone elses. Here's mine:-

GK) Peter Schmeichel - Big, agile and commanded his box well. Made some spectacular saves in his time.

RB) Cafu - I find it hard pressed to find a fitter individual. A constant menace down the flanks. He was ever present on both ends of the pitch even at 36.
CB) Franco Baresi - Superb reader of the game. Not mere coincidence he has so many medals. Part of arguably the greatest defence in the world at the time
alongside Costacurta, Maldini and Tassoti.
CB) Maldini - Not the paciest of defenders but like Baresi, reads the game really well. Putting him at CB to make way for my LB pick
LB) Andreas Brehme - Aside from being a good defender, he was a good passer of the ball and could play with both feet. Probably most known for his winning penalty in the finals of the 1990 World Cup against Maradona's Argentina.

RW) Ronaldinho - His control on the ball is simply sublime. His footwork is mesmerising.
CM) Ruud Gullit - Could play in a variety of his positions, such was his versatility. Played in attack and in towards the end of his career, at the back, like Matthaus did. A commanding and inspirational figure in the centre of the park.
CM) Maradona - Superb ball control, vision and ball control.
LW) Ryan Giggs - Was to be the best left winger in the world in his prime. Had pace and sublime skill.

ST) Marco Van Basten - Had good strength and a rocket of a shot. Sadly he retired before his time, succumbing to injury. Truly on of the greatest forwards of all time to me.
ST) Gabriel Batistuta - Sadly, never played in the Premiership. Natural goalscorer who was good on the ball. Surely one of the most prolific of his generation.

GK: Oliver Khan. 1 of the most consistent GK in my eyes.

RB: Cafu. This should be everybody's pick.
RCB: Nesta. He has great physique, but his ability to read the game is unbelievable. His tackles are always clean.
LCB: Maldini. Similar with Nesta.
LB: Zambrotta. Before he joined Barca, he was f**ing marvelous fullback.

DM: This is the tough 1. Either these 3:

1) Edgar Davids. He is like, ermm, Makelele, plus his great supportive forward runs.

2) Pep Guardiola. Gelled Barca's only Dream Team together single-handedly.

3) Fernando Redondo. You want to talk about underrated players? Look no further than him.

RM: Zidane. 1 of the best of all time. So no need elaboration here.
LM: Pavel Nedved. Creative and industrious player.
AM: Clarence Seedorf. He is small, but he compensates his physique disadvantages with superb touches and creativity. For me, he was as important to Milan as Kaka was to them.

RFW: Ronaldo. Great turn of pace, and great eyes for goals. Rare breed of striker nowadays. Which Ronaldo? Not the cute one.
LFW: Ronaldinho. In his prime, he was a total football God. No kidding. He is the only reason why Barca have so much followers in the USA nowadays. His skills offered much more than mere football. It caught everyone's imaginations.

I'm guessing it's Alan Smith, the ex-Arsenal striker and not the current Newcastle player? I've always preferred Ian Wright myself smile.gif

I was thinking the same, but tendousidek had Woodgate and Bremner in his ranks, so I'm guessing it IS the Newcastle fella who started at Leeds.

I mean, its your Dream XI and everyone has their favourites I suppose but... I'm curious... Why? The original A. Smith was one of the most underrated strikers in England, but the new one...

Well you're more than welcomed to name them in your squad. If you're insinuating that it's because they were great headers at the ball, then you'd have to consider Les Ferdinand, Duncan Ferguson and Niall Quinn smile.gif

I somehow never felt Vialli replicated his Juve and Italy form in Chelsea. I thought Torre Andre Flo was brilliant for you guys back in the day.

Okla since you did a Chelsea one, here's my Arsenal all-time XI

Dixon - Campbell - Adams - A. Cole (ugh)

Pires - Vieira - Cesc - Overmars

Bergkamp - Henry

Subs
Mad Jens
Keown

Anders Limpar (my first favourite player when I was 9)
The Original A. Smith
Ian Wright Wright Wright

Well Vialli was one of the favourites for the Golden Boot Award at the 1990 World Cup but he didn't deliver. Felt his best football was played before that tournament. Having said all that, he did average a goal every 3 games for Chelsea which wasn't all that bad lah.

Ah yes, "THAT" Michael Thomas strike. Jonno gave him some stick for that one. He didn't appreciate it really.

Flo was ok, and scored some really important goals for us, but Vialli really was the master poacher, not to mention his superb performance for us v Duke's team in the FA Cup in one of his better games for Chelsea.

I'm surprised Schwarz didn't make the list, one of the earlier 'imports' for Arsenal who had solid games in midfield. No TW14? smile.gif

Actually Shearer is very underappreciated by our Malaysian fans. He was good at headers and he used his upper body strength to his advantage (in other words, a dirty b@stard) but he also had unbelievable power in his shots and I don't recall him scoring anything but net-ripping goals. I think he would have been every Man U fans' Dream XI had he opted join them instead of his boyhood club Newcastle.

Schwarz only had a season or two with us, but for me did not contribute enough. I'd rather choose John Jensen! But one guy that I really liked was Manu Petit. His combo with Vieira was one of the best of all time in the Prem.

TW14... Well if he keeps up this form for the next 10 years, then why not? Hehe...

Actually I did have McMahon's name pencilled down but then inreplaced him with Ray Houghton who I thought was one of the best right sided midfielders in the league at the time. I'm still sore at Souness for getting rid of him before he passes his prime. I've already got Whelan, Molby and Gerrard in the middle with the option of tucking Barnes in if need be so I didn't see the need for a other central midfielder:) if I had one more pick, it would be McMahon

i see the old guards phil neal, alan kennedy, mark lawrenson, phil thomson, terry mc dermott, jimmy Case, Ray clemance, Steve heighway wont make into your team (well u did qualify that only those you seen on tv), but missing daglish & keegan! whistling.gif

but what a nice combo still (though i would opt alan hansen over carra), alan, mark & Hypia at the back. wont argue much on the midfield, could throw in daglish over Mc Manaman to make it 4-3-3 with barnes opperating as the 3rd strike.

dont know if it will work or sucidal but they quite represent what i enjoy watching LFC.

Thing is Dalglish had already moved on from being player/manager to just the latter when I started watching. Overlooked Alan Hansen though.

your line-up is about the same as mine with exception of Mark Wright for Sami. Molby for Alonso. And MacMahon on the bench.

Rob Jones will always be on my squad.. he was my fave when I'm in school and even got a shirt with his name on the back instead of rushie or barnes.

i think this is my best XI.. i saw them play.. those pele and maradona, i dont really know lah.. never see them play before...

-Schmeical... God like goalkeeper who help man utd to win their titles..
-Cafu and R.Carlos.. i think they were the best full back of all time, they can defend as well as attack..
-Campbell and Maldini.. who can doubt their quality... If they were not good enough.. they wont play at age of 35 and beyond...
-Essien... we ever said that, if Essien is fit and play... Your back 4 can play without any pressure.. and sometimes he did score some spectacular goal...
-Xavi.. well-known.. Mr. through ball.. look at barca and spain goals... how many chance was created by him...
-Messi... tiny that can change the goal if the ball is on his feet...
-Bergkamp..... A legend with calm and compose mind, which can provide assist and score goal..
-Henry....... An arsenal leading scorer, premier league all time best.. France legend and world cup winner... no doubt..
-Ronaldo...... A natural goal scorer... still the record goal scorer of world cup.... of course the fake ronaldo is still way behind..

gigi buffon - in 2006 world cup, he conceded only 2 goals (an own goal frm zaccardo and a penalty by zidane)
Buffon 2006 saves

maicon - very calm at the back, should be a dream right back for every team
Maicon goal

maldini - prefer him to play as a left back because you can see he got technique like a winger!
Maldini the best defender

pique - he can play as a center forward as well (against inter, 2nd leg)
pique goal

fabio cannavaro - "He won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2006, making him the first, and so far, only defender to win the award, as well as the oldest recipient." a quote from wikipedia.
Cannavaro 2006

gattuso - can you see any horse power ball winning midfielder like him?
Horse power gattuso

xavi - no doubt, a pure inspiration for all creative midfielders
Xavi assists treble!

messi - he glued the ball to his feet (47 goals for a winger, equalling ronaldo's all time goals record for barcelona)
Messi's goals

zidane - some say he can do what our fingers cannot do with his legs
the wizard

pele - 1087 goals for santos in 1120 appearances (wiki) WTF!!
The legendary

ronaldo - world cup goals record holder..the only player to score for barcelona, real madrid, ac milan n inter milan against each rivals..i mean, he scored a goal against madrid with barcelona, a goal against barca with madrid, a goal against inter with milan, and a goal against milan with inter...do u really think there is a greater striker? alan smith? yeah rite whistling.gif

These guys didn't make my squad but I feel they deserve a mention.

Claude Makalele has to be one of the best defensive midfielders I've seen. He was a key player for Real Madrid and his departure left a void in midfield. Thomas Gravesan was later given the task of replacing him. Don't watch Spanish football much so my accounts may be a little off.

Sergio Goycochea had an excellent World Cup back in 1990. He only played after Argentina's first choice keeper, Neri Pumpido got injured in their first game against Cameroon. One of the best at saving penalties.

Jari Litmanen was absolutely brilliant playing in the hole, behind a lone or a pair of strikers. Liverpool fans didn't get to see the best of him because Houllier opted to play him as a lone striker, chasing down hopeful punts up the park.

Anthony Yeboah. Big, strong, powerful and could kick like a mule. He was a handul for any defender. Scored a super goal against us. I can still picture it in my head.

He did that twice in a row, once was against us, the other one if I'm not wrong, was against Winbeldon. Great great strikes...

-----------------buffon--------------
thuram---stam---maldini---r. carlos
--------------makelele---------------
beckham------------------robben
--------------zidane------------------
------nistelrooy------batistuta-------

Buffon- as one of the more dependable and dominating keepers
Thuram - strong and solid player who can also cover in the center
Stam - is a no brainer actually IMO
Maldini - Versatile and solid able to cover LB as well
Carlos - Defend. Attack. Pace. Power. Thunderous shots.
Makelele- Simple no nonsense player who protects the back 4 effeciently
Beckham - not the most flashy but non can better his work rate. Also the passes, crosses and freekicks
Robben - Blistering pace + deadly finisher
Zidane - is zidane
RVN - would be one of the best box striker/ poacher i have ever seen.
Batistuta - Strong tall striker, packs a deadly shot as well

Right and how is your opinion better than mine then? It's a subjective matter and opinions are bound to differ. I'm sure that of the players I've mentioned, there is a better player in his place.

Continuing the trend of worthy mentions;

Chris Waddle - one of the better wingers on his hey-day, no mean feat to be able to be in the same team with Papin, etc in Marseille.

Philippe Albert - class defender extraordinare, although his defensive qualities are a bit suspect at times.

Alan Shearer - one of the best strikers of all time IMO, pity he didn't manage to achieve great things with England.

Demetrio Albertini - loyal servant to Maldini, and an effective midfielder when in his prime as well.

Raul - one-club player (before his transfer to Schalke 04, that is), which epitomises Madrid when he was there. Rose from the ranks, and captained them to glory as well, pity he should choose to transfer to the Bundesliga and not retire from Real Madrid.

I mentioned earlier that had Shearer decided to go to Man Utd, I think he will be held in much higher regard, especially among Malaysian/Asian fans in general.

Agree with you on Phillipe Albert... Annoying moustache though. biggrin.gif

Some other players I enjoyed watching: -

Rivaldo - Surprised nobody mentioned him in the last few pages. Had one of the best bicycle kick techniques around.

Gary Lineker - I started watching football when he was the England star in Italia 90. Not much skill, not much pace, but when you're an 9 year old kid getting into football, its really the goal scorers that matter. Bags of goals guaranteed with this guy (erm except when played out of position in Barcelona)

Paul Gascoigne - The only English player with skill in the past two decades. The one image that I will always remember (besides the Vinny Jones crotch grab) was the goal against Scotland where he lobbed the ball past Colin Hendry and slammed it home... The dentist chair celebration was also pure class!

Luis Figo - Another name hardly seen in this thread. Skill, technique, pace, power and the ability to conjour up flying pig heads from crowds.

Oliver Kahn - Often people mention Schmeichel/Buffon/Cassillas for "Best GK" but Kahn was one of the best in the world and even won the Golden Ball at World Cup 2006 (was it 06 or 02?). Had great presence in the box with his lunatic gaze and also had superb diving technique for a hefty man. Certainly one for the highlight reels.

When I started watching football, Southall was already in his tubby state at Everton. I used to think "Why the heck are the commentators calling him great? He's fat!"

Yeah he was a little tubby towards the end of his career, just as Andy Goram was when he joined the mancs on loan. Gone are the days of tubby players though. With proper diets these days, players are pretty fit.

I was thinking the same, but tendousidek had Woodgate and Bremner in his ranks, so I'm guessing it IS the Newcastle fella who started at Leeds.

I mean, its your Dream XI and everyone has their favourites I suppose but... I'm curious... Why? The original A. Smith was one of the most underrated strikers in England, but the new one...
well Smith of newcastle may not be a natural scorer, but I've always seen him as a hardworking forward that would win ball upfront and create chances for his fellow striking partner, despite his bad temper.

Since I'm getting blamed on everything, I'm surprised that (well I couldn't be arsed going through each and every post) I haven't see the following around:

Les Ferdinand - Typical English striker, big, strong in the air and probably the best header of the ball.

Franco Baresi - Younger fans would probably never heard of the fella, one of the best centreback in the game.

Fernando Redondo - The original DM, with his long hair, breaks up play nicely and would bomb forward with the ball. Having a tough mean look helps as well.

Paolo Maldini - An absolute legend, probably one of the best left back in the game, even better than Roberto Carlos as he was equally good going forward and defending. Him winning EVERYTHING that is there to be won probably makes him more of a legend, he has five, yes FIVE Champions League Medals, that's more than Ryan Giggs and Gery Neville put together! By the way, Giggs is a legend too...

Lothar Mattaus - German captain, like Backenbaeur, went and play as sweeper in the latter days of his career and did really well, won the world cup in 1990.

Marco Van Basten - I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned him (well, as mentioned, I didn't go through 6 pages of posts), probably the most complete striker I have ever seen, can dribble, score, set up, 2 footed, strong in the air can score from the distance, tap in, the works. The only way of stopping him was to kick him out of the game, had to retire at the age of 30. Had to have an ankle surgery every summer to fix the ankle, a result from being kicked at perhaps every game. One of the surgeon oonce said that they don't know where to make the incision to his ankle, it's been operated on that many times! His time as a manager probably took away lots of the gloss though.

There are lots more, will put them up later, as I remember more great players.

P/S: I thinkn it'll be heard for me to put up a dream XI as I could probably put up 2 or 3 teams of them, instead, I'd like to focus on the players, how good they are and what not. Of course, it's my fault eh Naz & Duke? whistling.gif

It's just my opinion, but I though Roberto Carlos was crap at defending. His only plus point was that he was quick and wingers who lacked pace like Beckham struggled to beat him.

Jonno/Duke, I think majority of the forummers are in their early 20s so probably that's why old farts like us and a few others only mention the late 80s/early 90s players.

A lot of great players back then, but we had a staple diet of the English league and occasional side dish of Serie A. (Remember "Match of The Week" with Zainal Abidin Rawop?). I suppose that's why not many will have La Liga players like Romario, Michael Laudrup, Luis Enrique, Hugo Sanchez, Fernando Hierro, Hristo Stoichkov etc who were in their prime in the early 90s.

And I just thought of one more. Stuart Pearce. Psycho. 'Nuff said.

His free kicks were also overrated, because of THAT spectacular one scored in Le Tournoi. But still one of the better attacking fullbacks for me.

@Jonno - Maldini, Baresi and MvB were in my team, pg 3. smile.gif

But Duke's right, so many great players that it's quite impossible to put them all in a starting 11, esp for those who watched football for nearly 2-3 decades now. Examples include;

Davor Suker, Zvonimir Boban, George Weah, Dejan Savicevic, Lothar Matthaus, Matthias Sammer, Rudi Voller, Andreas Moeller, Karl-Heinz Riedle, etc etc.

Chris Sutton - not to mention the one season he had at Chelsea.

Ah Zainal Abidin Rawop, brings back memories. It was actually back then that I "followed" the Serie A. Like the Premiership coverage though, the programmes were often 2 weeks old! Football used to be a man's game back then what with all the flying elbows and tackles from behind smile.gif Amazing isn't it? Back then you could play through and entire season with a squad of 14-15 despite the lack of protection for players. It's as though people were built from sterner stuff back then.

Petr Cech - Its hard to beat him... One of his best is his aerial ability..
Cafu - Good at both attacking and defending...And his leadership quality as well, never argue with the officials smile.gif
Roberto Carlos - Attack and defend no problem whatsoever! Terrific left foot as well..
R.Carvalho - Fancy him alot... A very good defender with pace, makes a pacey striker having a hard time to go around him..
N.Vidic - Aerial heading as well as tackling makes a relief for everyone..

c.Makalele - Rare to find his qualities nowdays and always sitting in front of the back four, closing gaps and to be true, during his days in Chelsea, almost all of the attacks start from him..

Xabi Alonso - Passes from short to long isnt a matter, his passing is superb, just see how Liverpool struggle when he isnt in the teamsheet..

Steven Gerrard - Just give him a BIT of space at the area in front of penalty box and watch the ball burst into the net...

D.Drogba - Strength, Pace, Heading, Finishing, and intelligence...! The man of the moment right now...

D.Cisse - It all went wrong when he comes to Liverpool at the age of around 22 or 23.. During his days at Marseille, most of his goals are bursting into the net with accuracy.... A striker which keeps beating the offside trap makes him one of the best striker i had ever seen..

And the last one....

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY...
No one is comparable to his finishing inside the 6 yards box... All hail the dutchman..

Batigol, ah, the great complete striker, and even more of a legend for sticking by Fiorentina when they got relegated, and then moved to Roma only to win the league medal he so deserved. Place as a legend of Fiorentina sealed when he scored the only goal against Fiorentina for Roma, refused to celebrate the goal, ran back to the centre circle, with tears down his cheeks, then coming out and apologise to the Fiorentina fans days later. An absolute legend, I don't think we'll ever find someone as passionate as him these days.

Zainal Abidin Rawop? Nah, Hasbullah Awang FTW! The "Ultimate" commentator, can commentate from football to swimming to badminton to probably cricket or saussage throwing contest. whistling.gif

What about Gary Lineker? Great striker, if I remember correctly, after being sent off once in his youth, he vowed that he would not want to get that again, and proceed to go through his professional career without a single card!

Os course there are lots more, like Johan Cryuff, Holland would probably win the 78 World Cup had he not protest and went to the World Cup with them. Had this hippy like believe and is against a lot of things, famously had only 2 tripes on his shirt when the team was sponsored by adidas, and everyone's shirt had 3 stripes (He had them remove one of the stripes). notworthy.gif

Lev Yashin : the best keeper of all time. Great leap & reach. When you have an award named after you, you know that you've more than made it.

Gerd Muller: nicknamed Der Bomber.Incredible scoring record....Scored something like 68 goals in 64 international games. Thats > a goal every game. Sort of like Batigol, just deadlier

--------Schwarzer/Kawashima--------

Uchida-----Marcus Tulio----Nakazawa-----Nagatomo

----------------------Ki Sung Yong--------------------

Lee Chung Yong--------------------------- Honda

----------------------Kagawa--------------------

--------------Cahill--------------Park Chu Young------

note

1-kinda split with Kawashima and Schwarzer.Kawashima is smaller than Schwarzer but Schwarzer did more mistake(Schwarzer is like a white David James, good at times, suck at times)
2-Cahill is awesome with his head, while Park is like Huntelaar.a poacher
3-David Ki isn't quite a DM but he distribute the ball nicely throughout the field.his long passes is excellent too
3-Lee's surgical passes and his trickery is something you'd see with messi(though not in the same calibre)a,while Honda is quite the mold of Rooney pre-2009/2010 season
4-Uchida is handsome.period

Current best Lineup from both of my favourite team...Bayern and Chelsea...

Cech
Lahm,Terry,Alex,Cole
Essien
Bastian,Lampard
Robben,Drogba,Malouda

Greatest 11...all lively..Lahm and Cole can do a great overlap..Terry and Alex both proven critical goal scorer..Essien dominate the middle...Bastian and Lampard goal machine..
Robben and Malouda..great pace...

Drogba...enough said..best epl striker of his time...
