Anthony Yeboah. Big, strong, powerful and could kick like a mule. He was a handul for any defender. Scored a super goal against us. I can still picture it in my head.

He did that twice in a row, once was against us, the other one if I'm not wrong, was against Winbeldon. Great great strikes...

Since I'm getting blamed on everything, I'm surprised that (well I couldn't be arsed going through each and every post) I haven't see the following around:

Les Ferdinand - Typical English striker, big, strong in the air and probably the best header of the ball.

Franco Baresi - Younger fans would probably never heard of the fella, one of the best centreback in the game.

Fernando Redondo - The original DM, with his long hair, breaks up play nicely and would bomb forward with the ball. Having a tough mean look helps as well.

Paolo Maldini - An absolute legend, probably one of the best left back in the game, even better than Roberto Carlos as he was equally good going forward and defending. Him winning EVERYTHING that is there to be won probably makes him more of a legend, he has five, yes FIVE Champions League Medals, that's more than Ryan Giggs and Gery Neville put together! By the way, Giggs is a legend too...

Lothar Mattaus - German captain, like Backenbaeur, went and play as sweeper in the latter days of his career and did really well, won the world cup in 1990.

Marco Van Basten - I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned him (well, as mentioned, I didn't go through 6 pages of posts), probably the most complete striker I have ever seen, can dribble, score, set up, 2 footed, strong in the air can score from the distance, tap in, the works. The only way of stopping him was to kick him out of the game, had to retire at the age of 30. Had to have an ankle surgery every summer to fix the ankle, a result from being kicked at perhaps every game. One of the surgeon oonce said that they don't know where to make the incision to his ankle, it's been operated on that many times! His time as a manager probably took away lots of the gloss though.

There are lots more, will put them up later, as I remember more great players.

P/S: I thinkn it'll be heard for me to put up a dream XI as I could probably put up 2 or 3 teams of them, instead, I'd like to focus on the players, how good they are and what not. Of course, it's my fault eh Naz & Duke? whistling.gif

It's just my opinion, but I though Roberto Carlos was crap at defending. His only plus point was that he was quick and wingers who lacked pace like Beckham struggled to beat him.
He's in my team dude. Like you have just mentioned, he was a complete striker. Batigol was another.

There are lots more, will put them up later, as I remember more great players.

Batigol, ah, the great complete striker, and even more of a legend for sticking by Fiorentina when they got relegated, and then moved to Roma only to win the league medal he so deserved. Place as a legend of Fiorentina sealed when he scored the only goal against Fiorentina for Roma, refused to celebrate the goal, ran back to the centre circle, with tears down his cheeks, then coming out and apologise to the Fiorentina fans days later. An absolute legend, I don't think we'll ever find someone as passionate as him these days.

Jonno/Duke, I think majority of the forummers are in their early 20s so probably that's why old farts like us and a few others only mention the late 80s/early 90s players.

A lot of great players back then, but we had a staple diet of the English league and occasional side dish of Serie A. (Remember "Match of The Week" with Zainal Abidin Rawop?). I suppose that's why not many will have La Liga players like Romario, Michael Laudrup, Luis Enrique, Hugo Sanchez, Fernando Hierro, Hristo Stoichkov etc who were in their prime in the early 90s.

Zainal Abidin Rawop? Nah, Hasbullah Awang FTW! The "Ultimate" commentator, can commentate from football to swimming to badminton to probably cricket or saussage throwing contest. whistling.gif

What about Gary Lineker? Great striker, if I remember correctly, after being sent off once in his youth, he vowed that he would not want to get that again, and proceed to go through his professional career without a single card!

Os course there are lots more, like Johan Cryuff, Holland would probably win the 78 World Cup had he not protest and went to the World Cup with them. Had this hippy like believe and is against a lot of things, famously had only 2 tripes on his shirt when the team was sponsored by adidas, and everyone's shirt had 3 stripes (He had them remove one of the stripes). notworthy.gif
