Warner Bros. and De Line Team for Ready Player One

Warner Bros. Pictures and De Line Pictures have bought the rights to Ready Player One, the first novel by Fanboys screenwriter Ernie Cline. The sale occurred a day after the book scored a publishing deal from Random House for North American rights. The property is described as follows:

In the near future, outcast teenager Wade Watts escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.

This sounds soooooo much like the One Piece manga laugh.gif

When the old Pirate King, Gold D. Roger died, he sends a message to everyone in the world of the ultimate treasure to find @ ONE PIECE.

In this movie, when the creator of OASIS died, he sends a message to everyone in the world of the ultimate treasure to find @ LOOT laugh.gif

Apparently this will have a lot of geek reference to films of 1980s. I grew up in that decade, this should bring back some awesome childhood memories.

The novel just found its publisher Random House (a nice 6 figure deal), before the ink on that deal dried it already been bought by Warner. Ernie Cline's (the author) first novel hit paydirt before the public had any chance to know of it's existence, let alone read it.

Blink and you will miss the pop cultural references. I saw Iron Giant, Some superheroes, Freddy Krueger, McFly's DeLorean, Akira bike, Tron cycle.....
Salute to the legal department for securing the rights. The teaser actually did a good job for setting up the world. They could potentially owned the pre-summer slot like Deadpool/Logan.

This trailer certainly warrant to watch in full 4k glory. The references just filled to the brim. If i have to choose will for sure watch this over Black Panther.

A pretty decent breakdown of who and what cameos in the trailer. Suppose the hardcore fans will find more hidden easter eggs to the book. Honestly those who haven't read ought to really give it a shot. It's a page turner and you bound to reread it many times over because it is really that enjoyable.

Watched the trailer. My assumption

-RPO is basically a movie just like Sword Art Online anime, where instead of setting the game to the world of dungeon n dragon, the creator mashed up all the 90s pulp culture and games till todate into one massive game world. Objective, find a special treasure containing all the creator's money. Rules : you die (or coma?) if you get killed in the game

Nope....you assume too much. The hunt only one aspect of it but the biggest hold of the story is how they used the nolstagic familiarity in a really refreshing way to an action adventure epic. Not emo anime BS.

Spielberg a bit late to VR-game as consumer has already found VR back their home shore via Samsung VR, Google Cardbox, Playstation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, customable VR desktop, etc but price is still steep.

Final trailer before the barrage of movie clips and TV spots. The only obstacle this movie facing is Pacific Rim 2 release a week before. There's a potential to be a substantial hit and hope Spielberg able to stay relevant in the face of comic book movies dominance.

Was helping my wife again to screen a preview for pr people and critics. All I gotta say this is the geekiest movie you can watch.

โ€œThis is not a film that weโ€™ve made. It is, I promise you, a movie.โ€ That was the quote Steven Spielberg made during the world premier. It basically telling everyone this is that classic Spielberg who defined the 80s pop culture. You will be transported to the thrilling roller coaster ride with a sense of wonder on every corner of the movie.

The middle action sequence will made you shed couple of geek tears as you are too busy to cross reference how many pop culture icons you can identify on the screen. Storming the castle sequence is a blueprint for DC Kingdom Come style of epic battle. The scope of it almost on another level.

The bad is the real world stuff a little thin and a weak villain overall. Pissy book readers will nitpick how it is not faithful...blah,blah,blah.

MCU take note this is how to do meaningful character banter and not cramming every cringey quips you can force into a scene.

To those still on the fence, perhaps give a try at Mamoru Hosada's Summer Wars to get a sense of idea what to expect. This is that more expensive and funnier version of that. 3D is a must for this one.

Read the novel, it was a bit meh to be honest, so when I heard that the movie version is a lot different than the book, I was intrigued..

no joke, Spielberg (or the writers) changed almost 70-80% of the detail, however, it made the movie a lot better than the novel, 8/10 from me

2 minor gripes about the changes though:

Movie was awesome!

Except kissing scenes, the film is watchable by all ages (6-60)

Spielberg seems to have been heavily inspired from anime (BTOOM for example)

Entertainment in its purest form! Visual feast but for some (like myself) would feel themselves to have been bombarded by VFX over 2 hours

This looks like another one of those movie where the loser becomes the hero and gets the girl at the end. The long running time is also putting me off but since this is from Spielberg and it has all those neat references, I'll probably give it a shot. Anyone watched it in IMAX 3D?

Ready Player One (2018)

I am going to sound harsh...

Since A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), Steven Spielberg has not made a good family base movie.

Don't get me wrong, he made good movies after that (sans Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)), but not in the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993) kinda way.

Watched this yesterday, and it is mind-boggling how he managed to make this movie!

It is a movie about Easter egg (which is launch during Easter weekend, some marketing genius is getting a big fat bones).

And the movie is filled with NOTHING but Easter eggs and I am NOT complaining.

No need to mention the obvious (Iron Giant), I see Marvin the Martian, Freddie Kruger, Ninja Turtles, doing Gandalf, without using the name Gandalf and The DeLorean with a Kitt, kit.... laugh.gif

Lots more that you blink and you miss....

Movie take place in a dystopia where life is so bad that everyone escapes into a virtual world and greedy corporation cashes in on this. And the rest is eye candy.

I usually complain about the lack of script, and have to say, as thin as the storyline is, the master storyteller, tells it well.

And The Shining Scene!!! OMG!!!!

BFG was a big let down. Steven had said that he sees a future with not big budget movies and everyone if their own film maker. Is this is last hurray before that happens? I hope not...

I really needed this movie and enjoyed it immensely.

Chances are, you would too

My Two Sen

On second watch last night, think at the end the old school of scripting still reign supreme. Its well paced with every Chekhov's gun paying out with a clearly defined act structure. Although I won't t necessary call this a deep movie with profound messaging. Leave that to the Coens, three Amigos, Fincher as they are the new zeitgeist of auteurs that make films and not movies. Above all this just show JJ Abrams is nowhere near the level of crafting an adventure movie like Spielberg.

Mind you there are severe problems with how the characterization being done with cliche motivations. Some scenes are downright corny. I won't necessarily pinned this movie as a gamer-centric movie. Old school cinemaphiles will find a lot of nod to 80s cinemas. It has a more vintage western RPG mechanic in the Easter hunt rather than modern JRPG. I see this more of Tron blended with Matrix and Willy Wonka as the basis of narration. Even you don't get the Easter eggs it still an enjoyable movie to watch without feeling at lost.

The biggest gripe is they did not do the 1,2,5 joke with the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. Truth be told I love the book not because its well written. Its no GRRM material. But it's damn entertaining and nerdy thrashy in a good way just like the movie. Hope Ernest Cline exposure with the real master storytellers like Spielberg and Zak Penn able to improve upon the announced sequel to the book. So Parzival next adventure will still go on but a sequel to the movie will wait and see.

It was ok...the writing was questionable and the acting was bland. But I do enjoy the action and some pop culture reference. MechaGodzilla and Gundam are the highlight

Watched it on imax 3d, was amazing biggrin.gif Worth to watch at imax and 3D.

I think it's pretty good, enjoyed it, especially looking at all the easter eggs, and knowing soo many of them. Story was ok overall, the enjoyment was a lot mostly looking at references and what not.

Overall it turned out to be quite alright I guess. There were a lot of people clapping at the end and most people seem to enjoy it. Didn't exactly felt like it was two and a half hours long. Oh and everyone lost their shit when Gundam appeared.
I'll just say that the last time I was mind blown by such amazing special effects is when I watched Sucker Punch.

Watched on IMAX at 1u earlier today, hall was pretty empty so, I was pretty much the only one laughing sad.gif

Such an awesome movie, so much fun. Thought it was a little emotional close to the end, thinking how we really do not have many passionate game developers and mostly dominated by greedy money grabbing big corps.

I thought this was a superb movie. Didnt read the book so cant really comment on how the book transpired on screen.

(on the whole iron giant ultraman thing, I think ultraman wouldve been damn amazing, but iron giant aint too shabby - plus, I've been told the book is so so so much different).

But in any case, I really enjoyed all the "easter eggs" and pop-culture reference. Probably those who were growing up in the Atari-age would appreciate some of the things more, but I did enjoy the movie a lot.

A solid 7.5/10 , where were the police throughout the whole movie?

Well the book is more nerdy with convoluted Easter egg hunts. Like recreating scenes from Wargames and Monthly Python, winning Pacman high score for one-up coin,etc....

Sorrento was a better villain in the book but Ben Mendelsohn did enough to make him the guy you want to punch in the face. Obviously he can't go "Una" type of creepy villain.

Spielberg a bit late to VR-game as consumer has already found VR back their home shore via Samsung VR, Google Cardbox, Playstation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, customable VR desktop, etc but price is still steep.
