Hi to all the Sifu outside, I'm planning to purchase a LED TV myself these few days, I've narrowed down to Samsung LED TV as it has the best picture quality i've seen, and its slim design is a killer, I'm a sucker for aesthetic designs.

I need to buy a LED TV which has local dimming for its LED panel, but the problem for me is that I've no idea which series of TV should i buy and their model number is kinda confusing for me, and the "friendly" people in Harvey Norman are less than helpful about the specifications.

Anybody can help me with this? A simple 40" LED TV with local dimming should be sufficient, no need for DLNA, 3D etc...

It would be great if i can have the price as a reference as well, thanks!

i would recomend series 6 since i'm using it.i think the pic quality is better than series 5.

I would recommend reading this article first. Helps dispell most of the marketing bullshit that Manufacturers conjure up to try and confuse most buyers.

"Local Dimming is a relatively new technology for LCDs that divides the screen into 100 or more regions and then controls the LED backlight intensity for each region separately so that areas with dark content use a dimmer backlight setting and therefore produce a darker black luminance for that region. Sounds great... the problem is that you are trading one artifact (black brightness) for a whole bunch of other artifacts that are more visually objectionable - you get a noticeable patchwork of different black luminance levels, plus halos and blooming around unusually bright objects on darker backgrounds, plus reduced dynamic range within regions. It's expensive and only works during dark content in movies - but with annoying artifacts. Before buying try to watch Dark City, Escape from New York, and Chapter 14 of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which includes the trip through hyperspace. It's a personal preference as to which artifacts bother you the most."


I'm using a Samsung 6 series UA40C6900 LED.

Its simple classic design and works like a dream.

Slim design is only for edge LED. Backlit with local dimming normally thicker than normal LCD TV.

But i thought edge LED also got local dimming? No?

but Local Dimming is better than EDGE LED right?

Edge LED means the LED are placed at the four sides of the TV, but the thing i don't know is if Local Dimming can be possible on edge LED TV.

Yes its possible. This years new series 7000 onwards is local dimming Edge LED Backlit.

However, local dimming not edge backlit does a better job. For that u need to go to the A950 2 yrs ago as Samsung did not release the local dimming sets in Asia last year.

For non edge lit with local dimming, I believe the older Sharps had but I am not a big fan.

The LG LH70 is a non edge lit local dimming set. And its pretty good.

How much ur budget?

How much and where did you get the UA40C6900 LED?

If have a budget, why not go for 3D LED TV.
At least it reasonable for next 3-4 years.

the 40'' is RM7499 and the 46'' is 9499 and comes with samsung blueray dvd and 1 year free subscription fee for astro beyond. i bought mine in samsung store at sunway pyramid but later i saw all the harvey norman offer the same package and price.

All LCD/LED TV can only set to 1920x1080p..

when i set to 1920x1080,it wont show in full screen.
full screen only available at 1680x1050..

I got my Samsung UA40C6900 last night, and its marvelous, I could connect to my computer via LAN cable and share media, I can watch you tube on my tv online!!! I'm sure it has many more little things for me explore tonight.

I watched Netherlands V Slovakia last night with that tv, though i don't have astro beyond, it still hurts to see slovakia score that late goal, make me lose money...

how much u buy it?
