Western China's main inhabitants (besides the Han Chinese) are the Uighurs. Uighurs are Muslim Turks, while Huis are Muslim Chinese (with ancestry from Persia/Arabia etc).

The best and safest way for a Muslim while travelling abroad is to go vegetarian. Take it as a way to purify your mind and spirit, away from the intoxications of meat. It's much healthier too.
