Dear all,

I would like to know if any of you have done this before? And are these available in Malaysia or Singapore?

I noticed very few of you speak on this. Is there any disadvantage in using products such as these or the 'Goo systems'?

Totally agree with dirtrun. Better make a frame + cloth, then paint it. For cheaper alternative, just use non-glossy off-white wall paint i.e ICI, Jotun, etc.

Yes. To ask those guy to do a perfectly flat (void of blemishes) will be a tall order and most likely more expensive to buy a screen or DIY screen.

Disadvantage of using a painted wall is that it brings out the imperfections in the wall in the projected image.

I'm a ghoo paint user. Yup, my wall is not perfectly flat with very little bump here and there; however, it is unnoticeable especially watching from 17ft away smile.gif

I was using white paint for 1 month before getting the Ghoo paint. The result was not too bad to my peasant eyes.

Hey guys, really thx for your replies. I just got myself Benq W1000 and in one month will be moving to my new home. I want to project a 16:9 image at 120inch wide. I cannot find off-the-shelf screens this size. Customised is costing more than RM1k.

I like the cloth option very much. Can any of you hint what material I shud buy? Do I still need to paint on it or just the cloth is sufficient? If paint is needed, matt (chaper paint) is better than gloss according to 'redwish5393'. But matt absorbs more than gloss right?

This is my first setup, therefore, I takin in all your professional advises... Thx in advance

While the BenQ is a bright projector, projecting at a 10 ft diagonal screen will reduce its brigthness quite a bit. If u do not have a proper light controlled room, get urself a high gain screen.

Also depending on ur seating position, the type of either white or grey screen is also important.

Lastly, I am sure u r aware of this, but a 120" screen would require a throw distance of about 15ft. Ensure that u have that as well.

I would advise contacting some people who have the knowledge as the proper screen material is key for pj. I would suggest a fixed screen.

I have max throw possibility from 24ft, so no problem there.
My seating distance will be between 14-18ft, so I am hoping 10ft width (my max wall width is 14.9ft) will not cause any problems to the eyes.

OK, I'll try e-bay for screens now. Any idea is I can find it in Singapore? BTW, I am in JB.

htkaki,

I've never traded in e-Bay before, so I go to Sing instead and do exactly as you said this weekend. Thx for everybody's input.

Why didn't you re-use this screen for your HT room? You could either leave it down all the time or take out the material and custom make a fixed screen out of it.

You're planning to have a screen that is 10' wide or 10' diagonal (8.7' wide)? Normally screen size is quoted as diagonal.

Anyway, seating distance of 14-18' is quite ok for 10' screen size.

I applied 4 layer of Ghoo paint (base and paint) for that wall and the viewing area is about ~140", my 120" is no longer needed.

I didn't compare Goo paint and my projector screen side by side as the 120" never enter my HT room... blush.gif I can't tell much of the different from my memory compare of the two. However, I did find noticable improvement on Goo paint over my normal white paint interm of contrast and color... So far I'm happy with Goo paint.

I think the product showed in the link is not really professional screen material, I'm actually thinking of building one for my new HT room, now interested in this HC grey screen

http://www.buildyourownprojectionscreen.co...n_material.html

they sell in ebay and ship worldwide.

jchong, thx for pointing out. So, for my case, if I use diagonal calculation, I need ~137" screen.

geforce1999,
R u located in JB? Can I view the screen?
Did you buy the Goo paint locally/Singapore?

Yup. And that is a very large size, so make sure your projector will be bright enough.

You may also consider a higher gain screen/paint/material.
