Seriously, you can probably fund a pretty decent Sigma 50mm f1.4 or the recently launched 85mm F1.4 (if the 50mm is any indication of its quality, the 85 probably wont dissapoint), without having to "trade in" the 70-200

The 70-200 still has its uses....this is as good as it gets for a medium telephoto lens.
*
I understand. But I don't see the point of keeping something that I have no use with, it's just a waste in my hand.

can, but 1st, i dont like it

2nd, it's not a landscape lens like what he say tongue.gif
*
I'd say depend on how you define your "Landscape"
IMO 50mm F1.8 is almost perfect for taking panos.

I thought you don't have your 50mm anymore?
*
I used to have it wut lol.
And I've seen quite a lot of nice looking panos using 50mm F1.8 on the internet.
It's defo better than using 18-55 lor.

is there a lens hood for 18-55mm? i found those which is very small i mean just like a RING only, i want those big big 1 like the 18-135 one
*
Whats the point? To make your lens looks bigger? Don't be silly - -
Any hood that is larger/longer than the designated hood will cause vignetting.

to protect the lens... hehe, i can make another good use of it mah icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Well yes, it does protect the front element but the main purpose of a hood is to block unwanted lights.

In fact you know what? Go ahead and buy a hood that looked big enough for you.
And I bet you right after you shoot once you will regret buying it.

QUOTE(casadida @ Jun 18 2010, 12:04 PM)
dear goldfries, i haven't gotten my canon 550 but planning to get it next weekend lar.
However, just my 2 cents. the problem is not starting out with 18-55 first or not.
i know it's cheaper and to learn with 18-55 but why i kept thinking about whether to get 18-200 first
is because when u get it with kit lens, it's relatively cheapker than buying it alone lor.
eg: 550 + 18-135 = RM3.5 / 500 + 18-200 = RM3.8 / 550 + 18-55 = 2.7
with body RM2.4k + 18-200 = around RM4.4k

so it basically comes back to the question of whether 'dai' or not 'dai'.
wanna be wise consumer mar.. budget only save around RM4k so wanna get the best deal lor.

just wanna ask you a question here, i heard that 18-135 and 18-200 actually the
zooming ain't that big a difference based on calculation.
so i'd rather get a kit II for 550d than kit II for 500 hor?
*
200-135 = 65mm
65mm x 1.6 = 104mm in difference.

So, I did the calculation, what do you think?

IMO, the 18-200 is a very good lens, the build is quite solid, tad bit better than 18-135. (Though I've only handle that lens once on my friend's 7D)

QUOTE(goldfries @ Jun 19 2010, 01:02 AM)
viking's combo is a sweet one but whether or not it suits you is another thing.

see, why spend RM 1.3k for 17-50 f2.8 if it's the range you don't like? you could use the money for other things. same rule applies to the 55-250 and 50mm f1.8

it's a lovely combo really BUT would you be channeling the funds there?

i don't know you. neither do i know your future. so best is you just stick to the basic stuff first then only upgrade when you really know what you like or venture into.
*
Couldn't agree more.
Why buy something that you know you won't like. (tho there is no guarantee that you will never like haha)
Just start with something basic, 1855 is a good start, I started from there too, but didn't took me long to realize what I want in my photos lol.

IQ = Image Quality.

but what you mean make sure get the sharp copy? u mean the technic or lens ar?  tongue.gif
*
It's a very common portraiture though. lol I think everyone can do that - -"
Cause you see, 50mm F/1.8 is manufactured in Malaysia, so chances of getting a lemon copy is quite high, so make sure you test the lens out kau kau before leaving the shop lol.

Anyway L lens hor, you don't need to know about it for now. You'll know what they are automatically and naturally soon after you got your DSLR laugh.gif

thanks for sharing. seems this lens quite good.

by the way, paiser.. should be AYC not AWC mentioned, how to test gao gao then know it's not lemon copy ler?
any tips to share?
*
focus and snap wide open, then zoom 100% to check whether the focused point is sharp or not.
Use center AF point, the corner softness is quite bad on 50mm F1.8 so it will be hard for you to judge.

lol viking, the bokeh is so terrifying sweat.gif
