Wow so happy to find this thread. I've been trying to open a bank account in SG but having no luck.

I'm a foreigner from Canada living in Malaysia on a valid work permit, and I do have a Malaysia Maybank savings account.

Does anyone know if the Maybank ISavvy SG account applies to foreigners?

I'm hoping this will work as CIMB Malaysia won't even let me open a current or savings account even with a valid work permit, so I wouldn't be able to go the CIMB route.

If I understand correctly, any Maybank MY customer can make use of the cross-border account opening service to get an account with Maybank SG.
You can visit any main/large Maybank with premier banking service to inquire about cross-border account opening service (only for SG).
They will certainly ask why you need the SG account, so you must have a good and valid reason.

Canadian should have no problem opening. Only Malaysian. The ks to mega scandal.

Thanks both. I'll be heading out to Maybank in about an hour to open up my account.

I'll report back once completed.

So I just applied for my Maybank iSavvy account and they'll be couriering it to Singapore. Had to pay 30RM for courier fees which they debited from my account.

Hopefully the process won't take too long.

Wasn't asked for a bank draft or anything yet.

I thought you need to make an initial deposit of 500sgd? Maybe they have changed the process then..
*
That's what I thought too. I had the cash ready. But they never asked for it.

I prefilled out the application before I arrived so they basically just took it, photocopied some of my documents and said they'll call me.

It's only logic after your account can successfully created then only ask for your minimum deposit .

Ok Maybank just called me. I need to go back to provide a $500SGD cheque, which then they'll take it out of my account.

wow thats a long time ago..

coz to open ac with DBS need a valid reason. And i do not think this reason will be entertain now. However u can try.

The best bet for SINGAPORE bank ac would be MAYBANK .

Besides Maybank and CIMB for opening bank accounts in SG, are there any other banks that offer this type of program?

As an expat they won't allow me to open a bank account at CIMB even with a valid Malaysia work permit. So I'm looking for another option besides the Maybank ISavvy.

The decision to accept/decline an bank account application is very subjective. Sometimes it depends on the mood of the staff serving you.
With a work permit in MY, you have very good chances to get a bank account with any banks in MY.
You can try to open account at another branch of CIMB, maybe you will have better luck smile.gif
Just make sure to give a very good reason for needing the account.

Hi Hyperzz

I've actually tried at 2 different CIMB branches in Bangsar. Both said that because I'm a foreigner with a work permit, my employer needs to have their bank account with CIMB as well, which it isn't. The first branch I figured ok maybe its only this branch's policy, but the second time I was told that I just gave up.

What foreigner are you?
Best to open normal bank account with Cimb Malaysia then after one year apply online for cimb sg.

Canada

Opening a normal bank account at CIMB Malaysia is the issue, I can't even look to think about opening a CIMB SG account yet.

As I don't work for CIMB I don't know if this is their policy. But I think some bank staff could be more easygoing. I would try more branches of CIMB if I were you.

AFAIK, only Maybank and CIMB offer this service without requiring you to join their premier banking (min RM 200k). Other forumers can correct me if I am wrong.

An European guy shared his experience about getting a SG bank account on another forum. He succeeded after making close to 10 trips to SG. He got the DBS account on his 3rd attempt. It's about how badly you want the account. If there's a will, there's a way.

With your Canadian passport and MY address, you stand a good chance to get the DBS account. My Malaysian friend who tried last year was given the cold shoulder. Only the Marina Bay branch would open account for nonresident. You have to ask for the DBS vickers account first. Ramjade would know more about this.

Canadian no issue opening SG bank account if go down. If you are US/Malaysian/Indon maybe got issue.

QUOTE(elea88 @ Apr 14 2019, 01:03 PM)
i agree .. IF THERE's a will.. there's a way.

coz i blur blur walk into STandard Chart Singapore.. and the manager then.. happily open the bank ac and the brokerage ac for me..
after many declines from so many branches.

Whenever i walk pass a bank. i just try luck. and BINGO.. did it in one of the days... She will try to sell all their investment products.. however. i just sit and chit chat.. ask her to totally convince me why  i want buy UNIT TRUST from Std Chart when i can get from Philip Cap at 0%.. then talk talk .. she say O.K la.. but hv to be super patient.. total process took me few hours.

then after open the ac. a month later realise did not sign the US ac form.. so i went back and bring her some presents local products from M'sia.. and she open an ac for my sis and a friend  on my 2nd trip. She is now promoted to another division..

So, yeah.. if really want Singapore Bank ac.. whenever in Sg.. just go walk into any branch and try try. There is no SOP.... it depends on u and the officer at that time.
*
Appreciate the feedback guys. I'll give it another shot at another CIMB branch.

Just to update the status of my ISavvy account.

Today I received a letter from Maybank Singapore with my Access ID for Maybank2u.com.sg, and that I should be receiving my PIN and Security Token soon.

Looks like I have my Singapore bank account! thumbup.gif

Any success with CIMB?

Thanks!

I haven't tried yet. I'll be away from Malaysia for a week so I think I'll try again when I get back. Will try a branch farther away from the Bangsar area.

On a somewhat related note to my CIMB issue,

I opened a savings account at Heong Leong and they asked me the same questions.
- Is this for your payroll account?
- Will you be investing with us?

Said yes to all and they started creating my application and processing it.

Then out of nowhere, the teller agent asked me "We can't find your employer bank account, are they not with us?". I said no and they had a 10min discussion in Malay and decided to give me the account anyways.

I don't think I was supposed to get it but they were probably 80% done processing my application.

I think the requirement that your employer should have a bank account with the same bank is not a hard requirement.
It can be waived but this decision is up to the staff serving you. It's a plus that you said you will invest with them  thumbsup.gif
Better luck with CIMB next time.

Just in case this helps anyone applying for the SG ISavvy, my Maybank SG ISavvy account is finally 100% read to go. For whatever reason, my PIN arrived 1.5 weeks after the initial notification letter that my account was open and when the security token & debit card arrived.

Either way, whole process took about a month from the time I applied to when I received my pin to set up my online account.

Process was painless, (except for having to go back to the branch a few times. I'm an expat with no car here yet lol)

Filled out the application (URL is in this thread)
Went to the closest Maybank branch with the application and all necessary documents
Maybank deducted $500sgd from my account
Paid the courier fees of 25MYR
After 2 weeks received the first letter stating my account is open
2 days later received my debit card & security token, but no online PIN
PIN arrived about 1.5 weeks later
Logged into my online account and $500SGD funds are in my account.

Can confirm this works for expats.

Thanks everyone for this thread. I've been looking to get an account in Singapore since I moved here but no luck until I saw this thread. thumbup.gif

Hope this helps anyone thinking of opening the Maybank ISavvy account.

Now I just to figure out how I can open a CIMB account as an expat lol..

I'm still trying to figure out what the best way for me to open a CIMB account is.

QUOTE(Ramjade @ May 18 2019, 09:10 PM)
You have 2 ways.
Open via Cimb clicks Malaysia,  Open using Cimb clicks SG.
*
CIMB Clicks is just the online banking platform right?

My issue that I have is that I can't open a CIMB savings/current account as an expat. CIMB is stating that in order for me to open a bank with them, my employer needs to have a bank account with them, which they don't have. I've only tried two branches, both in Bangsar and both have said the same thing. I was going to try a branch farther out when I have time but my gut is telling me it won't work either.

Is there anyone in this forum that works at CIMB that can clarify on my situation?

Then you go the old fashion way. Open via Cimb clicks SG. Activate account via doing a FAST transfer of SGD 1000 into the Cimb account.
*
ok apologies for my newbie knowledge on this but how do I do the above if CIMB MY won't let me open a local MY account? Isn't the requirement for the SG Fastsavor to link to your CIMB MY account?

QUOTE(Hansel @ May 19 2019, 08:48 AM)
SO your objective of opening accts in SG is to be able to transfer funds easily bet SG and MY, is it ??
*
Correct 100%.

I can do this with Maybank now since I have a MY Maybank account and the SG ISavvy account now.

But with CIMB, I can't open a local CIMB MY account due to my expat status, and their rule that my employer needs to have a bank account with them.

So I'm not sure how I do what Ramjade said above without having any Malaysia CIMB accounts to link.

OK,.. I appreciated your quick reply, bro,... I loved quick replies,..

Emm,... let's do it this way : since he kept saying can do this and can do that like he is The MAS, why don't you ask him for more steps first ? Then you try to execute his recommendations. If it can work, then other forummers here can emulate.

If it can't work, make sure you reprimand him first, then I will advise you.

I will share the first tip here : forex rates bet CIMBs of both countries is the best and is the fastest way to transfer funds, outside of using your Debot Card to access from ATMs.
*
I just woke up. not always this fast haha.

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind thumbsup.gif

QUOTE(Ramjade @ May 19 2019, 09:12 AM)
You don't need to have Cimb Malaysia.
All you need is a local SG bank which can do FAST transfer to Cimb SG (as verification and activation)  then you are all set to open.

To transfer use instarem or money match. Avoid using banks as you will save more. MYR->SGD (instarem/money match).

SGD-> MYR (transferwise)
*
Thanks for the additional details Ramjade. So if I understand this correctly, steps should be

1. apply for the CIMB SG Fastsaver account online
2. submit my MY residence documentation/Canadian passport/MY work permit details etc..
3. Account will go under verification
4. If I end up getting approved (even with no CIMB MY account), send $1000sgd vis instarem/MM to the newly opened SG CIMB Fastsaver account?

Since I have the SG Maybank ISavvy account, that could be my option as well to send the funds?

Cimb bank account application very easy only.
1/ have a local SG bank account to active Cimb SG bank account
2/ open via Cimb clicks Malaysia.

No need work permit or anything related to SG.

Appreciate the feedback

Can I use my SG Maybank ISavvy account to transfer to CIMB SG Fastsaver account?

Correction. You cannot use instarem/moneymatch to verify Cimb fast saver.

Use instarem/moneymatch for next subsequent transfer to save cost. First transfer need need to be from any SG local bank and need to be in the form of FAST transfer.

What this means is wait until you can login maybank isavvy. Then initiate a FAST transfer to Cimb SG to activate the account. You have 1 month from making a Cimb Fastsaver account to initiate a FAST transfer with SGD1000 into Cimb SG. Failure to do so will cause Cimb fast saver to autoclose.

FAST transfer = IBFT

Use instarem/moneymatch to transfer money from malaysia.

Thanks Ramjade. I'll give this a shot when I come back from my business trip.
I didn't know that I could open the SG account without having a CIMB MY account. Hopefully it works out.

I'll keep the thread updated.

Yes,.. if you can pass the steps of the documentation stage for your application of the CIMB Saver FastSaver, use your Maybank SG to FAST-in the $1000.

Haa,... if this is true and you don't need work permit documents to pass the verification step for CIMB SG, we have found a loop-hole here for Malaysian account applicants to open an account at CIMB SG.[B]

I guess we'll find out when I start my application after my business trip.

Back from my business trip.

I've completed my CIMB FastSaver-i SG application and I got my account number & application number. Now I have to transfer the $1000SGD to my CIMB from my SG local bank account, which is my Maybank ISAAVY account.

Question I have. What's the best way to send money from my Maybank MY account to my Maybank SG account? I'm only showing Western Union and Telegraphic/SWIFT Transfer.

Pardon my newbie knowledge on the bank systems here as I'm still new to KL, but are those my only two options to send?
