Q: mind to share why you accept that shared hold NOT under your CDP/name?
A: I am not transferring CDP to Maybank KE. Any shares I buy with DBS Vickers stays with CDP unless Maybank KE can give me free transfer (which they don't so won't transfer). Any additional shares I buy I will use Maybank KE. Reasons:
(i) Maybank KE buy/sell cost SGD10/transaction (not sure if they extend the promo next year). DBS Vickers to sell cost SGD25 (my 2nd issue. Buy at SGD10-18 but sell at SGD25)  sad.gif
(ii) Need to contact DBS Vickers before selling (my main issue with DBS Vickers) or else selling cannot go through (as what they told me in their email)
(iii) I don't attend AGMs (too far and no money to go so frequently). So no CDP no problem. After all, if I really want to attend, just buy some shares with DBS Vickers and buy the remainder with Maybank KE. (eg buy 1000 shares using DBS Vickers, next round buy with Maybank KE). You can attend AGM too if you use Maybank KE. Just need to inform your broker/remisier.
(iv) With DBS Vickers, I cannot apply for rights issue (only SGreans can apply rights). They will auto sell my rights. With Maybank KE, can apply for rights  rclxms.gif

Q: Why not Standard Chartered?
A: - Simple. They don't let me have their bank account. No bank account = no trading account as bank account is they said it's compulsory to open account first. Went to 3 branches in SG. All reject me. Only way to get the bank account:
(i) buy insurance investment from them
(ii) take loan
(iii) become priority customer

I gave up on getting their account doh.gif

Also, they are not the cheapest for US. If you want to buy US ETF, be prepared for the 30% with holding tax. Only way to get around this tax is buy from ETF listed on London Stock Exchange which mirror the US counterpart. That way, only kena charge 15% tax. If you really want to buy US stocks, take a look at 8 securities, Based in HK with zero commission. rclxms.gif

Q: Which would you advice if i were a small retail trader ($2000 max each trade)?
A:
Anyone will do. If you prefer keep in CDP, DBS Vickers Cash Upfront. If you want cheaper, Maybank KE prefunded/Standard Chartered (if you can get account with them). For me I want cheaper as I am stingy with cost and since Maybank KE let be buy at SGD10/transaction until end of the year I wills stick with them after DBS Vickers promo expired in June as come July, DBS Vickers will charge SGD18/transaction. Next year, I am sure Maybank KE have SGD10 promo some more thumbup.gif

For now, I stick with DBS Vickers until end of June. Come June, I will buy from Maybank KE.

Hope this answer your question.

ii) Need to contact DBS Vickers before selling (my main issue with DBS Vickers) or else selling cannot go through (as what they told me in their email)

Ramjade.. need contact them 1 time only for Permanent sell limit.(appx 50% of total share value). they will SET a PERMANENT SELL LIMIT base on your SGX STATEMENT.
no need contact them everytime need sell.

I do it annually .. coz increased in share holdings.

QUOTE(kenviro @ Oct 19 2017, 08:09 AM)
Last week I went to Singapore to try to open a bank account there.

I am a Privilege Banking customer in UOB Bank Malaysia. Since I wanted to open a UOB bank account in Singapore, I requested for a reference letter from my UOB branch and they provided it to me, though they said that it's no guarantee that the UOB branch in Singapore will open an account for me as it's getting more strict in Singapore.

I went to the UOB branch in Orchard Road and the lady staff (for account opening) that initially attended to me asked me what is the purpose that I would like to open an account. I said that it's for investment purpose. She said that it's getting more strict in Singapore for foreigners to open a bank account. Then she said that she will refer me to another colleague who is in the investment department (at that point of time, a thought came to my mind that I shouldn't have said that the bank account is for investment purpose).

This other colleague of hers was also another lady. She tried to engage in some small talk and ask about my background. Then she tried to sell me on some kind of unit trust savings plan, that goes together with a savings account. The bad thing about this unit trust savings plan is that you have to put in a monthly sum for five years. You can only withdraw a partial sum before the end of the five years, so this means you will lose money if you withdraw before the end of the five years. And the minimum amount that the branch will apparently accept from a foreigner is S$1000 per month! Obviously I didn't agree with the unit trust savings plan and she wasted 40 minutes of my time. Before I left, I told her that I was disappointed.

Anyway, I haven't given up on opening a bank account in Singapore yet. I'll try again with two other UOB branches since I understand that not all branches are the same and some could possibly be more lenient than others.

As a note, please do not go and open an account with UOB branch in Orchard Road. Try other branches.
*
yes Kenviro.. go to few more branches.. please note in SG.. if you intend to purchase the unit trust, the sales charge can be negotiated. and there is no SOP...

Yeah,... same happening to me too,... in the documents sent to you, they asked fro your Tax Fine Number too, right ? Actually, we do not have to reveal this, especially if Msia has chosen not to sign anything with SG.

I am still wondering how does revealing our Tax File Number affect us ? LHDN does not tax on foreign investment income - this is for sure.
*
so just ignore the letter?

Can I purchase stocks through poems? I prefer to stick to one platform instead of multiple platforms which can be difficult to manage in the Long run.

In terms of the brokerage, what do you mean by pre funded? Means you purchase with cash in account?
*
yes prefunded is cash upfront. u put cash inside then buy within what you have. and its nominee ac.

the other is CDP ac

Yes you can just open POEMS as they are ALL IN 1.

Ramjade

I have some questions to ask you, if you do not mind. smile.gif

Can the trust balance of KE Trade Prefunded Account keep the distribution in USD?

For fund withdrawal of USD distribution, can we request Maybank KE to transfer the USD fund via EPS to Transferwise account (keeping the money as USD)? After all, the Maybank iSavvy savings account and CIMB Fastsaver account are denominated in SGD.
*
before keeping in USD.. transfer in USD.. be aware of all the charges.

As I don't work for CIMB I don't know if this is their policy. But I think some bank staff could be more easygoing. I would try more branches of CIMB if I were you.

AFAIK, only Maybank and CIMB offer this service without requiring you to join their premier banking (min RM 200k). Other forumers can correct me if I am wrong.

An European guy shared his experience about getting a SG bank account on another forum. He succeeded after making close to 10 trips to SG. He got the DBS account on his 3rd attempt. It's about how badly you want the account. If there's a will, there's a way.

With your Canadian passport and MY address, you stand a good chance to get the DBS account. My Malaysian friend who tried last year was given the cold shoulder. Only the Marina Bay branch would open account for nonresident. You have to ask for the DBS vickers account first. Ramjade would know more about this.
*
i agree .. IF THERE's a will.. there's a way.

coz i blur blur walk into STandard Chart Singapore.. and the manager then.. happily open the bank ac and the brokerage ac for me..
after many declines from so many branches.

Whenever i walk pass a bank. i just try luck. and BINGO.. did it in one of the days... She will try to sell all their investment products.. however. i just sit and chit chat.. ask her to totally convince me why i want buy UNIT TRUST from Std Chart when i can get from Philip Cap at 0%.. then talk talk .. she say O.K la.. but hv to be super patient.. total process took me few hours.

then after open the ac. a month later realise did not sign the US ac form.. so i went back and bring her some presents local products from M'sia.. and she open an ac for my sis and a friend on my 2nd trip. She is now promoted to another division..

So, yeah.. if really want Singapore Bank ac.. whenever in Sg.. just go walk into any branch and try try. There is no SOP.... it depends on u and the officer at that time.
