to copy contacts from a nokia phone running on symbian is rather simple.

1. mark all your contacts in your nokia phone, press option->copy->to memory card
2. copy all the .vcf files from sdcard:\others\contacts to a new folder in the root of your desire sd card
3. in your desire, go to people and press menu->import/export->import from sd card->import all

Since I am new to this android, I need to ask a few question

1. I am unable to create a shortcut to show the notifications. Everytime, I need to press the menu key and then notification. Is there anyway I can create a widget or some kind of shortcut to the home menu?

2. Unable to use own sound as notification to email or sms arrival? Can only select based on those built in?

3. Can you select different sound for sms or email arrival - right now, any type of email/sms arrival - I have the same sound

I also want to share the software that I have installed since Thursday

1. ASTRO file manager
2. Youtube HD - replacing the built-in Youtube app
3. Advance task killer
4. chompSMS
5. WiFi On/Off Widget
6. Bluetooth On/Off Widget
7. Barcode Scanner
8. Advance Task Killer
9. Evernote
10. F1 Racing
11. MSN Talk
12. Roland Garros (from Gameloft)
13. Opera Mini
14. Places directory

Anybody can share what other games/app that is fun/crucial/must have?

I actually don't mind paying the USD4.99 but need to have some review if possible before making the purchase

Thanks
*
1. at the home screen, touch the top bar (notification bar) and pull down. you'll see all notifications there.
2. you can. http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1213449
3. go to messages, press menu, under "receive messages" -> notification sounds

for all new owners, i'd suggest you guys download the user guide and give it a read. it has answers for most of the questions mentioned in this thread.

use 3G APN. it will automatically downgrade to EDGE if it can't find any 3G coverage.

classes for sd card merely tell you the MINIMUM speed. some people who have class 2 sandisk branded sd card can achieve read/write speed of up to 10mb/s.

read this thread for the discussion..

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...ass-6-micro-sd/

anyway, a fast read/write speed is useful to prepare for froyo when you can put your apps on sd card. smile.gif

Thanks man!  thumbup.gif Will be looking forward this weekend.
I noticed that the difference between a normal 3.5mm headphone jack with HTC Desire's jack is that the normal one has a triple-conductor while HTC's is a quad-conductor jack. We can see at the provided HTC earphone there is 4 segments (dunno what it's called) just like Iphone's instead of 3 segments. Anyway will buy an adapter in case I can't find the right headphone for me  smile.gif
*
i think those extra segments is to cater for the remote function. the htc default headphone has a remote built in.

guys, no need to compare which phone is better la. all phones has pros and cons, just choose the one that has features that suits your lifestyle and usage.

some prefer manual cars so they can control which gear they want to use, others prefer auto so they can just step on the pedal and move.

press the "12#" key on the keyboard, then you will see a "1/2" key on the lowest row, second from left. press it and more symbols will appear.

no ©, ® though.

the battery life is quite disappointing, but i did a few things to prolong it. yeah, i know it cripples the phone significantly, but i am more concerned about not being able to make a phone call during emergency because of flat battery.

here's what i did:-
-switch to gsm only (my place doesn't have constant 3G connection)
-switch off mobile network when i don't use data (can switch it on fast via widget or press and hold power button)
-static wallpaper
-low screen brightness (non automatic)
-disable background data

it means swype really does it like the tutorial in the utube is it? does it uses current dictionary? meaning if we are using manglish, is it easy to type or not?
*
yes, just like the tutorial. just slide and it will guess the words. for manglish, i would just type it out instead of swype-ing.

@juggernault.
IMEI SV is 00, number unknown, maxis set.

ic..
wait, it means that swype is integrated with the normal keyboard? just press the menu button to activate it or we have to open it from the program?
*
after you installed it, in keyboard settings, there is a swype checkbox. check that to enable it. then in any text imput field, long press and a pop up will appear asking you to choose the input method, then u choose swype.

swype has it's own keyboard and it's different from the default one. for one, there is no button to hide the keyboard. i need to press the "back" key to hide it.
