also, if you get the Pioneer LX models with ICEpower, connecting the pre-outs would defeat the purpose of having the digital amp inside the Pioneer

if the player has onboard decoders the 7.1 analog outputs can be connected to a multichannel power amp (or multiple stereo amps)

however unless the player also has a volume control, there is no way to control the volume on the power amp.

Also, what would you do with other equipment - astro decoder, xbox, media player etc etc

I'm not advocating this direct connection - I'm just saying that the analog outputs are line level signals that can go into a power amp. As with anfieldude, I would recommend using an AV processor - or AV receiver - for switching, bass management and volume control.

Unfortunately AV processors are even more expensive than AV receivers even though they don't have built-in amplifiers.

if you already have the mch power amp, then get a AVR with pre-outs lah. just make sure it isn't one of those using digital amps (you pay more fir digital amps, only to bypass them)
