If you had devices(PS3 for example) that can make use of the HDMI port then yes, it is important.

Well, usually LCDs with HDMI ports also come equipped with speakers(albeit crappy ones).

It'll be easier for him/her just to plug and play the console/device without the hassle of getting extra components.

It'll also allow the user to have the LCD for both PC use and PS3 simultaneously(not displayed simultaneously but plugged in simultaneously)

They can just switch output display using via buttons for display mode.(DVI or HDMI mode)
