Just call to check what's the required ID before you actually go and queue up.

But when I was on EP, I always bring my passport to do anything formal. Regardless of whether I think they are doing a good job or not, I don't want to be an idiot and do multiple trips because I wanted to test the system and leave my passport at home.

In the case of mobile SIM cards, apparently the service providers can refuse to provide services to you if they are not satisfied of your identity for any reason. Blame it on the terrorists who used mobile phones to do their thing.

Apply national library card also need passport, even with EP. sweat.gif

then, by working at Sg for 2 years, can I get PR straight away?
is this true? is this still affective?
*
If you are considered a "foreign talent" with the right skillset and working in high demand jobs, you can get it almost immediately.
But then again the PR policy is sometimes vague and subject to change.

hi all, been following this thread quite a while.. thanks for all the information.. just got job offer from a company, this monday submitted my EP application..

they said most likely will know the result by next week.. after that i have to do a medical checkup.. there is few questions i want to ask about medical checkup.. can anyone help me.. thanks!

1. What kind of test they will do? is it same for all EP application?

2. how long will the medical checkup be ready? do you guys know any hospital or clinics which can do it fast? (Reason is I might be staying SG till my medical report is out)

3. do we have to pay for it? if yes, how much?

4. After i take my medical report, what should I do? To MOM for them to get my fingerprint?

Thanks all again !!!
*
1. Depends. Your EP application will state the tests that need to be done. In my case was the usual chest x-ray (check for TB/pneumonia) and HIV blood test.
2. Mine took 3-4 days. I did it in a normal clinic near my workplace, but best that you clarify with your employer if they have their own preferences.
3. I believe the company has to reimburse you.
4. In my case I collected the medical report myself. Your company will arrange an appointment for you with MOM.

Which is us. tongue.gif

@lled1975: you want cheap = have to be further; further = higher transportation costs
Nowadays renting HDB is freaking expensive, not much diff vs private.

Woodlands and marsiling will be abit far for me.. around 45mins+ to reach outram..
*
The northern parts like woodlands, marsiling, admiralty, punggol are cheap because they're pretty far away and still under-developed. But they are a lot less crowded esp Punggol - always see blue skies there.

I'm not sure whether cantonese skill is in demand, that's why i said he's lucky because he doesn't speak fluent english.

He really has luck on his side, most Singaporeans will definitely look down on him if his English isn't good.

Hi guys, I will be completing Bachelor of Computer Science (software engineering) next year.

Most of my family members are PRs and Singaporean. I will find a job and settle down there.

I hope to join Microsoft Corporation and other MNCs.

Question: Should I take Microsoft exam? What else I should do to add "value"? What is the starting salary of a fresh software developer?

I need your advices and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
*
Not easy to get into MS and other MNCs unless you've done internship with them previously, or your results are fantastic.

Thank you for your quick response.

What if I show them a fantastic Final Year Project and other impressive projects?

I really want to join Microsoft Corporation, should I sit for Microsoft exams?

Does communication skill important to a software developer?Ā  AFAIK, my communication skills is poor. What are your suggestions and advices?

Thank you so much!
*
Just to give you an idea of what the MNCs are looking for, based on my experiences.

1. I went to a demonstration by a former NUS student, who interned at Sun and is now working there after graduation (way before Oracle acquired Sun). He worked on JavaFX during his internship when JavaFX was still in beta.

2. Another guy from NUS wrote a super-fast finite model checker using C# and is pretty much guaranteed a job with them when he finishes his Phd.

So I would suspect they prefer freshies who had previously interned with them, or done some really super work using their technology.

You need to improve your grammar BTW.

Hi guys, i've posted on the other thread about looking for engineering job in Singapore. But can't really get much help. Hope i can get more details here instead.

I am a 24years old Malaysian currently unemployed, and is actively looking for a job as Project Engineer or Project Manager in the Engineering Industry in Singapore. Where can I find out more info of this industry in Singapore? Would really appreciate if someone could help to advise me. Thanks in advance.

Aren't you a bit too young to be a PE or PM at 24?

well, alot of singaporeans used to be malaysians, so i think malaysians are quite spared... our style & culture is also very similar so its easy for malaysians & singaporeans to blend together...

the discrimination to FTs is mostly Pinoys & Mainland chinese me feels.
*
Not necessarily. My SG aunt (on my mom side) looks down on Malaysians (to me: "you Malaysians can't do anything right"; "work in Malaysia lah, why all you Malaysians like to work here in SG?! Taking our jobs away!") but she was born Malaysian and only became SG because of her SG-born husband.

I think she buthurt cos I have better qualifications than her kids.

wow if 1.5K would be quite difficult to cover all expenses ya? I heard rental is about 500 for a small room?
*
1.5 - 1.8k is for local poly students (who are already pretty damn good, BTW).
Degree typically 2.3 - 2.5 or 2.8 - 3.0 depending on company.

500 for small room? Probably, in some place far from work and transport.

degree can also get 1.5k salary though. for my case, i grad in perth australia and i got a job with only 1.6k basic but then again, after including the allowance and OT, i manage to get 2.5k to 3k+
*
I think you seriously underpaid if take away allowance and OT, the market rate basic is average 2.5k degree. Might get higher if you're from SG local public unis.

how much the market in spore??
*
2.2k is already a bit tough surviving in SG. Remember that rent is the single biggest expenditure in SG.
Even if she has almost no experience, she should aim for at least 2.5k. Anything lower than that your friend should stay in MY.

*
1.8k!? Clearly being squeezed kao kao.
That amount work in MY will save a whole lot more.

disagree. even with 1.8k one can still live in SG n save up easily. its all up to a person lifestyle n spending habit.
*
QUOTE(rickysim84 @ Sep 30 2010, 06:34 PM)
yeah, when i first work and still under probation, i cannot claim any OT or allowance and my salary is only 1.6k. But i manage to save 800 per month. i spend 800 per month on food + transport only.
*
As you guys mentioned, it's all up to individual discipline. But to be squeezed down to 1.8k is really too much.
Might as well work in MY for 1 year, gain some XP and then look for opportunities in SG.

QUOTE(keelim @ Oct 8 2010, 02:25 PM)
Has anyone ever experience one company with 2 or more different sets of travel policies on Business & Economy Classes?

My company in the States has travel policies depending on the hours regardless of the designations to fly on Business Class. In Singapore, we are quite hybrid in the sense that it is biased to the designations and hours. Now, to my utter surprise, the company policy in India forbids ANYONE to fly business class regardless of hours!!

Was having this conversation with one of our colleagues from the States, and he said, this type of policy is discriminatory in nature and cannot be enforced in the States. Unfortunately, India HR policy is not under the purview of the States, and the company gets away from this to cut costs.

What a racist cost cutting measure….
*
My old company in MY same. Unless you have doctor's paper to prove you have some underlying condition that may be aggravated by long hours in cramped conditions, you fly econ.

nice find, nowadays coz of the inflated expectation of the economy, people are raising rental prices according to "market" conditions.

I always thought these places are considered quite 'ulu' hence the lower rent?
