Do superstition affect you? It did to me. Recently I bought a car and had to pay some money to buy a number plate. Its not becoz I like the number. Its becoz I want to avoid certain numbers that will make it hard for me to sell my car later (I oredi kena with my previous car which had two digit '4' on the plate, cilaka.) So I did it for financial reasons.
Yes many of us don't believe in lucky numbers but we still choose to avoid it because its seems nobody want to buy anything with a "bad" digit on it. So indirectly a disbeliever oso encourage the practice of lucky numbers.
The question: Do lucky numbers work?
Before you say no, let me give this scenario. Lets say you were shopping for a house and you got two to choose from on the same street. One is no. 44, the other is 68. Price same, both are equal in all other respects. Which would you buy? Why? If you avoided no. 44 and you say lucky numbers don't work, isn't that a contradiction?

QUOTE(abubin @ May 7 2010, 12:16 PM) Give me a number plate with 4444, I'll gladly take it. Such a nice number. Maybe thieves will avoid stealing my car for fear of getting bad luck, LOL. Ha ha, good idea! All the car on the road will make way for you when u pass, lol... Lucky I managed to get a good price for my car... by selling it to someone who don't believe in numbers. Can u believe the car no. was 1144 and it had far less problems than my fren whose car no. is 168 (he kena accident summore). This post has been edited by Beastboy: May 7 2010, 02:04 PM

QUOTE(teongpeng @ May 7 2010, 08:56 PM) ppl want nice number because its associated with status. if u got 8888 number plate ppl will think u are some kinda rich bugger and have better impression of you. ppl with random number like 4592 or sumthing pppl will say...what la this cheapskate spend a bit ma...buy better numbers. Something like that. Yup I get wat u mean. The belief in lucky numbers is still the root cause behind that. JPJ smart. They know you are willing to pay to get lucky number so they auction it. So no surprise, if u got any of those 'magic' numbers, then u must be rich enough to bid. Its amazing, everyone I know don't believe in lucky numbers but they all play safe as you say, ha ha.

QUOTE(robertngo @ May 10 2010, 10:09 PM) this is human nature that always trying to find patent and meaning in stuffs that often dont have meaning. True. One thing about Malaysians that's a bit different though. If you start pondering about the meaning of things, people start seeing you as an oddball with an undesirable trait of thinking too much. People always tell me: just do lar, u think so much what for? Even people with masters degrees tell me this!

If this doesn't convince everyone that numbers are lucky, I don't know what will. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news...n-10-years.html"A mobile phone company has suspended the number 0888 888 888 – after every single person assigned to it died in the last 10 years."

QUOTE(objectifyme @ Jun 1 2010, 09:25 AM) But if the number 4 in Chinese means death, but something good in Malay? What does that mean? That the numbers work according to what race you are or the language you speak? I think so. Its autosuggestion, aka self fulfilling prophecy. Try this bowling alley experiment. Keep saying to yourself, "sei lor" when you throw the ball. You might find it landing in the gutter most of the time. Now try to play another game and tell yourself "strike" when you throw the ball. Quite likely you won't do as bad. If you got money and time, you can repeat the experiment 10-20 times and see the results for yourself. What the number sounds like in your language can make all the difference. To cancel out the effects in any language, simple. Just don't believe in it.

QUOTE(ComposMentis @ Jun 1 2010, 11:25 AM) 13 carries almost the same tone as 'sure live(more like bringing great luck to your life)' in cantonese , so this is why chinese love this kind of number so much If you've traveled to Hong Kong before, you'll notice most buildings don't have 13th floor. Got floor 11, 12, 12A, 14. I asked my hotel concierge before and he said floor 13 will attract ghosts.
