I personally think cover letters are pointless, I've never asked for one and I barely read those that falls on my lap with a cover letter.
It is meant to quickly summarize your application for the job, but I rarely find one that is so mind blowing I gloss over their CVs. So, to me (again, personally) it is just a waste of one's time to prepare one unless it is specifically requested.
Having done this quite a while, I must stress that cover letters are absolutely crucial. We find that cover letters are very effective to differentiate the good from the excellent. Especially in the job market in Malaysia, where writing in good English is a rarity, this is definitely you chance to stand out with a solid cover letter. It is meant to quickly summarize your application for the job, but I rarely find one that is so mind blowing I gloss over their CVs.
