no worries vivtch. RES do come in plenty of colors and patterns. not to mention all the morphs.

btw awhile ago the market had been flooded with yellow eared RES (no red pigments).

Thanks, cami.

However, I just realised yesterday night that the light colour could be of some other reasons. This is what I found out. When he/she is totally dry, the carapace looks like this.

I got he/she from pet shop on Sunday, he/she is in a tank with a few hatchlings and one 3.3” guy (which I took as well). He/she is at 2.7” SCL.

I kept he/she alone in shallow water (just 2” water depth) for quarantine & observation purpose before putting together with my existing 2. He/she is walking (literally) fine as yet to have chance to see he/she swims, eating fine but slower when compared to the 3.3” one, pooing fine too. Carapace & plastron are hard, eyes are clear, nose is clear. When out of water, he/she does explore around but of course at the end look for hiding spot. He/she looks active to me except this weird whitish stuff on the carapace. Plastron is normal. The white stuff cannot be scratched off. It doesn't look like fungus. Suspect mineral deposit?

Since I just got him/her, I don’t know how he/she was kept previously.

Just wanna ask:-
1. Is this whitish stuff harmful to him/her?
2. Will it get worse?
3. How can I remove it?
4. How should I keep he/she for the time being? Dry dock or in water? I currently reduce the water to only 0.5” depth.

Thanks a lot for any help/advice.

owh, i don't believe that i can finitely distinguish between mineral deposit and shell fungus on res if you ask me  doh.gif  (maybe others can, not me)

anyway, this is (an alternative) method to find out if it is mineral deposit. try putting on some vinegar on one of the smaller scutes, leave it for a while and scrub it off with a toothbrush or something. repeat the process for a few times, let the scute dry and see if there is any difference. mineral deposits could potentially come off using this method. yeah, this is hard work but would save you the time and effort needed for other types of treatment, which could require weeks. plus, you would know that it is just mineral deposit and not fungus.

the other treatments are of course the normal betadine - ointment - dry docking method or the acriflavine (spelling?) method. medications for the former can be obtained from pharmacies while the latter could be obtained from aquariums/fish shop.

Yet to try the vinegar method coz no vinegar at home.

However, I just noticed yesterday that he/she is floating unusually....the back part is kept floating upwards as if it cant sink. And, also saw small bubble at the nose. Is it onset of RI?

What can I do on my own to help him/her if it is confirmed RI besides bring to vet?

Always read Dr Yeoh is good, is he the only vet who knows how to treat TTT?

Thanks.

Not sure about the name thus not sure whether suitable to have it in there. Afraid poisonous to them if eaten.

Will house 4 RES (ranging from 2.7" to 3.7" SCL) in it.

wow that's a really nice piece of work!

for the sick turtle, if you haven't really done any medicinal treatment (baytril, reptaid etc), put it in confinement and continue on with supportive treatment. get an aquarium heater and set the temperature to 30 degrees celcius 24/7 while providing the usual basking space, light and clean water.
That's a Portulaca grandiflora cultivar. They do contain cardiac glycoside (which could cause cardiac arrest) and oxalic acid (which could cause calcium binding, oxalic poisoning, etc) but so far most of the research on human and mammal toxicity doesn't show much ill-effects.  (though if you ask me, i'm not taking chances of putting them in there with the turtles smile.gif)

First of all, thank you. But have to give the credit to my dad who put my concept into reality rclxm9.gif

For the sick turtle, since I got him/her, he/she has been on his/her own as quarantine is recommended before introducing to existing group. Can I administer baytril or reptaid on my own? If yes, where can I get it? And how to do it?

Currently I changed water daily, even use RO water instead of tap water. Put at balcony for natural sunshine during the day (but not sure whether he/she basks as I am out to work). Night time, bring in under basking light. Just dont have aquarium heater as yet, will get it today or tomorrow. Does aquarim heater have different capacity? Or it works with any size of the tank?

For the flower, I will remove it. Will plant kangkung instead. If you would recommend, what flower can I plant in there (next to the basking platform) taking into consideration the height limitation?

Thank you.

Kangkung oso not good.why don u buy some feeder fish to feed them instead?
*
I didnt know that kangkung is not good for RES.

For all these whiles I read here from version 1 till now, I got the impression that kangkung is ok for turtles while sawi will be for tortoise. Maybe I read/remember wrongly.

Then, what greens can I offer as staple to RES? I would like to get them on greens more.

Thank you.

Thank you for all the praise.

Azazel, so far, I have spent approx. RM1400 which excludes metal works as dad has yet to give me the bill. RM1400 is only for the main components such as fiberglass tank, eheim 2217, hydor ario colour 2.

Cami, thanks. Will research more before putting any live plants in the enclosure.

BenSow, am I allowed to disclose names here? I found 2 traders. For retail, only standard sizes. Customised sizes allowed if big quantity.

p.s. Maybe you should get something like this to complement your new (and should I say AWESOME!) setup. Just a thought...smile.gif

Tempting thought..... very very tempting but I think I better stick to my four for the time being. Or else I may end up have to upgrade their tank again in the very near future which I dont intend to.

Help.....RES not eating

One of my RES has been not eating properly since 11th Oct. He/she ate averagely half of his/her usual (prior to 11th Oct) quantity only.

He/she is about 3" SCL. Kept outdoor (balcony) in aquarium (no cover). Currently kept alone in a small tank, partial water change on daily basis (because no filter for this small tank). Night time I turned on heat lamp from 8pm to 12midnight.

I am not at home during weekdays daytime (coz working), so not sure whether he/she basks or not. But on weekends, he/she does not bask as much as before.

Didnt spot any other symptons.

I got him/her as 1.5" hatchling in July 2009 and raised him/her on pellet alone till now, does not eat vege at all. 10 days ago, I started giving some canned tuna, he/she ate slightly more (compare to pellet). But since I offered canned tuna, now he/she refused to take pellet totally. But, since last Saturday, he/she did not eat anything at all, not even canned tuna.

1. Is it ok to give canned tuna?
2. What other foods can I offer to induce his/her appetite?

Since young, he/she gets panic easily comparing to other RES I have. Once panic, he/she would refuse eating. But the longest he/she wont eat was just 2 days.

Is he/she stressed out thus not eating as usual? Am I worrying too much? Should I leave him/her alone for a while? How long can a 3" RES stay not eating?

Thank you.

I have read that it is not recomended to provide too much marine food to RES. How deep is the water level? Is it floating and struggling to swim down?
*
Previously water depth 7", currently 2" to 3". No problem to swim up or down.

Hi all, Happy CNY to our fellow forum members who celebrate CNY and Happy Holiday to the rest.

I have 4 RES and would like to feed them vege more often. But I am very lousy with vege names. The list I found at the beginning of this forum (listed below) is very helpful. But the problem is, for most of them, I dont know what they are called in Chinese or Malay.

Butternut squash
Cactus leaves
Chicory greens (Escarole)
Collard greens
Dandelion greens
Endive
Mustard greens (Sawi)
Papaya
Turnip greens
Watercress

As such, I would like to ask what will be the local vegetables that I can get easily from market and feed regularly to RES.

I have given them kangkung, carrot top (leaves), carrot and sawi (choy sum) before. Are those ok? What else can I give? Can I give sweet potato leaves?

This one, the mouth is yellowish, unlike the rest of my RES. Wonder why? I have given him/her carrot before? Could that be the cause?

Have anyone managed to submit their forms for declaring red eared sliders to Perhilitan recently? I mean in these past few weeks?

Today, Perhilitan WP KL informed that cannot keep RES at all, they will not accept the declaration forms. Need to surrender RES to them.

If any of you managed to submit, at which branch?

Thank you very much.

Still can sell meh?

Heard any change of decision on RES right before the deadline?

Also, what are the species that we can legally find, buy and keep here?

Thanks.

besides, the longer the grace period is, the longer will it take for us to get our permits.

i've been talking to some enforcement officers, and according to them, it is actually up to the State Directors to give recommendations on that matter (as by right, the power to grant special permission for RES is in the hands of the Director General) after the RESes are declared.

The Act stated that way. However, branch staff do not give any positive sign at all sad.gif

In today's The Star

What will be the effect on individual pet owners/hobbyists? What are the species involved? All in Wildlife Conservation Act 2010?

What you guys think?

Licences a must soon for all who keep exotic animals
By S.S. YOGA
yoga@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: All premises housing wildlife, including pet shops, will now have to apply for permits to continue operating under the new Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abd Rasid Samsudin said even individuals keeping wildlife would be required to apply for permits.

“Pet shops have to do so. Currently, all they need is a licence from the local council,” he told The Star.

He said this was one way of monitoring premises such as zoos and pet shops to ensure that they did not deal in illegal trade of wildlife as many, especially shops, had previously been found to sell illegally-obtained wild animals.

The ruling also covers common household pets which are on the endangered species list, including animals such as the star and radiated tortoises and other exotic pets such as imported snakes and reptiles.

Abdul Rasid said the regulations for keeping animals in such premises were expected to be ready by the end of next month.

It was up to the minister to decide how much time should be given for zoos and other establishments to comply with the new regulations, he added.

“We have informed all of them about the new conditions. So far, we have audited 17 zoos and establishments and some have failed to meet the requirements.

“We have advised them of the changes they need to make to comply,” said Abdul Rasid who declined to reveal which zoos and establishments had failed the first audit.

He added that Perhilitan had proposed for a bond to be imposed for the issuance of permits for animals individually and if these were later seized, the bond money would go towards their upkeep.

Abdul Rasid said the department always welcomed help from the public and non-government organisations in monitoring the situati- on.

“To help with this effort, once each premises gets its licence, we will post details of each animal and the permit issued on our website to make it easier for them to be monitored and no question of impropriety may arise,” said Abdul Rasid.

He added that a zoo committee, comprising officials from the ministry and other stakeholders like NGOs, would be formed once the regulations were in place.

However, Sahabat Alam Malaysia president S.M. Mohd Idris said the new ruling would have little effect on smuggling of wildlife in the country.

“There is no assurance that Perhilitan will be able to curb animal smuggling even after imposing the Act.

“It is impossible for them to keep track on all individual owners or premises,” he said.
