I have a feeling that the y99 I bought is actually y00, and the shop owner labelled it wrongly.

With a little bit more digging, I think the wrongly labelled y00 is actually y02. But I'm not sure also how trusty is the source...

QUOTE(auhckw @ Jun 2 2011, 06:51 PM)
Yes, I noticed the y00 is diff from the book and the photo I took. The dapio you quoted is y00, my friend bought it at penang. I think maybe y00 batch is incorrect or got confused.
You see the left photo y99, I think it is the correct version compared to the book. The y99 dapio (the other photo) looks more dated. y99 has marks of insect eating the pu wrapping. I think the shop owner confused about y99 which is actually y00. But he insist he is right cause he bought the stocks.
Based on what I checked just now, I don't think a yr99 batch or this tea exists. The first batch was released in 2000, the batch without the stroke that is. Those wif the stroke are later ones. Just as u said, he may have confused the year of the one without the stroke. The one wif the stroke should be from later batches, can be up until 2004.

QUOTE
One thing I am confused is also kunming factory is 1, but the number is showing 8.

It's a custom ordered tea from what I gathered so I think the number is okay...

Meanwhile, here is the larger resolution for the magazine. I don't understand chinese, can you roughly summarized what it is trying to say?

The small text in the first image describes the details of the person in the picture. For the next image the text before the "G" are review of the tea from different persons, while those after the "G" are irrelevant.

Back to the 8668 been research...

Went and spoke to the owner, he admits the y99 I bought is the right version which is being referred in the book and won award.

The y00 is not the same as the book which is why he never says it was 8668. He didn't label it 8668 either.

Actually there is more story about this, but not convenient to write online...

Hi there, welcome to this topic. Feel free to explore the past pages. I started from zero and have posted my learning process. It may be of some reference, though I may be wrong in some of my older posting... haha

If you treat tea as a hobby/collection, there is a lot of exploring to do. It can be fun but it may not come cheap... same goes for any hobby if you get serious. The difference, this tea hobby appreciate in price a lot and you will not loose money (if you kept them well).

There's another official name for this tea called "Kunming Millennium Red Brand Iron Cake 8668" (direct translation from Chinese), that's y I think that the owner labeled it y99 purposely instead of by mistake.

Normally the raw material of a tea is harvested 1 year in advance or more b4 the tea is released from factory. I've encountered some tea merchants who use this kind of method to sell their tea, leading their customers into thinking that the tea is actually older that it's stated. For me, it's the date when the tea is released from the factory that counts.

There are reasons for tea merchants to label the date differently but they should be honest with buyers when comes to year of production. For example, 88 ching bing is not from year 88. It is just a label.
